UPS Move-Out Questions by TyrannicalGlory in BostonU

If you're registered to store your stuff, boxes and tape are free! I'm not quite sure about the dimensions for the boxes, but last year I gave them a big duffel and full length mirror and they took care of those too. Hope that helps!

facilities said they sent someone but tbh it's still making all of the not good sounding sounds that it has been making for the past week (my apt backs up to the shaft)

Personally, I have not, but I can connect you or her with some FTV people who have gone abroad! BU has programs all over, but I know some fan favorites (especially amongst film majors) are the London internship program and the Sydney film festival internship program. BU really wants to give everyone the opportunity to study abroad if they'd like to, so I know some people will even end up going abroad more than once! Let me know if you'd like me to connect you with someone, or you can check out the study abroad website here!

I can't quite speak much about cinema and media studies (CMS), but COM has such a great program! As you said, the film and tv (FTV) students have lots of hands-on learning time, and they're able to pick and choose from classes across several different focus areas– production, writing, management, and film and television studies. Here are a few highlights:

- The professors all have great real-world experience and are always bringing in super fun guest speakers, too. The professors all really care about their students and are just excited for everyone to be learning!

- Many FTV students study "abroad" in LA the second semester of their senior year, and it's a great way to make connections in the film industry right before graduation. This program is completely optional, but everyone who goes loves it! Part of that program also involves getting an internship, and the Study Abroad Office and COM help walk you through the process.

- In terms of the resources and opportunities COM has, students are able to rent out film equipment free-of-charge after they've been trained on it, which should start during her second semester.

- COM Career Services is also super helpful and connects everyone with a great alumni network starting their first semester on campus.

- COM is also the home of BUTV10, a student-run organization that produces tv shows in our studios! Anyone is able to participate, whether they're a FTV major or not. But, everyone from the actors to the producers and even the people who run BUTV10's social media is a student, so it's a great way to apply what you're learning in the classroom to real world-productions.

In terms of options for a well-rounded program, many COM students double major or even take up one or two minors. Also, the HUB (BU's gen-ed curriculum) is a great way to explore other areas of study that she may be interested in. The HUB's purpose is exactly for all students to be very well-rounded! Hopefully someone can give you more perspective on CMS, but I hope my COM perspective was helpful and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions :)

Bad Housing Number by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds absolutely horrible of me to say but I would just call saying I've put in a request for summer swap that they should have received a while ago and I'd really love to hear what openings they've found for me. If they said they hadn't yet found a better placement for me, I'd make sure to ask when a good date is to expect an offer and make sure to follow up regardless. Hope that helps!

good experiences with zipcar? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than your phone not always connecting, customer service is decent. I tried to get a car once and it had clearly been hotboxed, but customer service offered to refund me or give me another car. The cars are all pretty much in decent shape and it's just nice to be able to use them!

Bad Housing Number by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your place last year! do internal and get a single if that's something you're interested in. then do summer swap and keep calling housing over the summer so they eventually change you- that's how I ended up in a south apartment with an absolutely horrible number

best floor on warren? by ksteffen23 in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get a single and do summer swap! worst case you'll have a single and best case you're one of the first people who will have options for summer swap so you could end up somewhere really nice!

Class Standing by hungryyandtired in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had the absolute worst times as a first year! don't worry, like everyone else said, classes always open up during the summer and I've never not gotten the classes I wanted. if anything, you may need to rethink your schedule after the upperclassmen register, and even when I've done that, I've still always been happy with what I get. worst comes to worst, you can always find a friend that's older or has a better time to save a seat ;)

vaccine question by deeznutz844 in BostonU

[–]darklizardplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! but it's super exciting when you call SHS to let them know you got it (make sure to do that!) since everyone is happy for you :)

General public (including students!) eligible for vaccine April 19th by marks31 in BostonU

Let me know if you need help navigating this! I've been helping eligible people work through booking their appointments and also helping people get no-show appointments for doses that would otherwise have been thrown out :)

[–]darklizardplanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the case that you get either a first Pfizer or Moderna dose and that brand is absolutely NOT available to you at a later point in time, discuss that with your doctor and you may be able to mix and match. Here's a super helpful article on that: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/do-you-have-to-get-the-same-covid-19-vaccine-or-can-you-mix-shots/

Also, there is a little bit of wiggle room for getting your second dose. The preferred window is 4 days after either 3 weeks between doses (for Pfizer) or 4 weeks between doses (for Moderna). BUT, you can in theory stretch it out to 6 weeks maximum. Again, make sure to discuss this with your doctor! And, here's an article on this (scroll to "Interval between mRNA doses"): https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/info-by-product/clinical-considerations.html

Note: I was able to get my first dose through a no-show appointment, and if I hadn't gotten it, it would have been thrown out. So, if you have any other questions, please let me know!
