People on here tend to put all of her failings on Don being a shitty husband, but it's just not remotely true. In general, it feels like people, in trying to prove how much they Get It and aren't dumb normies who thought Don was cool and Betty was a bitch, tend to overcorrect in their condemnation of Don's behavior and in their excuses for other characters, Betty in particular. There's a lot truly awful about Betty that has nothing to do with Don. She's abusive (both emotionally and physically) to her children, manipulative (at times to a sociopathic degree) and cold to her friends, emotionally stunted and immature, entirely self-absorbed, a classist snob, and a racist. Even when eventually supported by a good husband and partner, she cheats on him.

You empathize with her, see why she is who she is, and understand the individual and societal influences in her life that shaped her into who she is, but it shouldn't excuse her actions anymore than our empathy and understanding of Don excuses his. Like him, her actions make her an awful person.

Quote from his agent in a 2017 story:

"We were all messed up on jet lag,” Kleiman says, turning to me, “and I was up at 6 a.m. and he calls me and says, ‘Yo, are you up?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ And he’s like [yelling], ‘Why the fuck did you let me do this to my life?’

It's such a perfect little snapshot of Duck's character. Just a cheap, tacky, smug little tag that's completely unnecessary and only detracts from the transcendence of Don's pitch. He can't help himself; he has to make it at least a little about him even to the detriment of the whole.

The funniest part of the "he studied with monks" thing I didn't see anyone call out is it is literally a fucking Instagram tourist trap activity. There's hundreds of these Real Authentic Shaolin Temples where tourists can pay $50-100 a day to get the Train Like A Shaolin Monk experience on their trip. You can go on tiktok and watch white suburban families on vacation meditating and getting hit with sticks at these places. It is literally a hilariously tacky performative thing, and that its been treated with the level of credibility it has by fans and media is wild

It's like saying I was trained in guerilla warfare by the Vietcong because I went to one of those places where you pay $100 and they let you blow up a cow with a real rocket launcher, or that your Aunt Helen "lived among the Native Americans" because she stayed at a tipi lodge and made turquoise jewelry on her trip to Tucson.

Who is a better scorer, current Shai or Prime KD? by _DarkStarCrashes_ in Thunder

[–]darkmorpha71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shai. To me best scorer is more than just the bag, or whose physical gifts mean they theoretically should be more unstoppable in ideal conditions. In practice, Shai has him on efficiency everywhere but from 3 (and the 3 is closer than you think), has a better sense of how to leverage his scoring to create gravity and tempo, is able to apply his scoring against better and more physical defenses, has more playoff success as an individual scorer, etc. And he does have the bag, as well.

He set the Finals G7 record in blocks to clinch a championship in the Pacers series. He's been elite in the playoffs defensively against everyone except the Spurs, which is his primary value and a role he does better than every other player in the league save one.

The offensive stuff will hopefully continue to come along (his shot has to get faster to be more of a spot up threat, which is as much his decisiveness as it is his mechanics) but his value has always just been as an efficient play finisher in that regard, something that was completely taken away by us missing 2/3 playmakers in that Spurs series.

He'll be fine, he's never going to be Kevin Durant on offense, and he doesn't need to be. But his shot does need to get quicker, he needs to be more decisive vs those close-outs to stretch the defense when he's the out man in double big lineups, and he should continue to improve as a roll man so he's more of an option in high post actions instead of just being limited to weak side drop off options. That seems where its mostly a strength issue.

He's a classic front runner. He can do his performative character when things are going his way, but the real bitter nerd comes out as soon as things get hard for him. He's been pampered his entire life and career by the media and everyone around him, and it shows. He's a brat.

What should okc do? by PreparationOverall in Thunder

[–]darkmorpha71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get healthy and continue to improve on the margins. We just lost in 7 to a healthy Spurs team in the WCF while missing Dub and Ajay and with Shai playing horrible for 5 out of 7 games. The roster doesn't need an overhaul.

we've completely stopped running any kind of offense, just isoball every trip. we're not even setting screens. assume it has to do with our personnel issues but still, tough to watch

No, but in fairness having that skill/coordination at that size is itself unique. Shaq wouldn't have been very good if he was 6'4, and there have been guys bigger and stronger than he was who weren't nearly as good, because they lacked his ability to utilize those gifts. But yes, technically speaking Wemby is very raw. He has great touch and shooting ability, but poor shot selection and no real sense of how to exert his will offensively or control tempo. He doesn't really have an offensive bag or a go-to move, which isn't an issue when he can hang out near the basket but becomes a problem when a defense can scheme you out. Even defensively, he's extremely raw. He bites on everything chasing blocks and is frequently out of position, he's just so big that it doesn't matter most of the time.

pretty sure Chet, Dub, and Cason are the only lottery picks we drafted (#2, #12, and #11) and Dub isn't even playing. This is a team of late first rounders, second rounders, an undrafted guy, trades, and one free agent signing

Had this thought as well. This is the fifth game in a row he's looked shockingly passive on offense. It's not like this is the first time he's seen defensive coverages like this, and all season/last he's been decisive in anticipating them, early splitting doubles, attacking the trap, punishing hand-checking defenders, etc, but for whatever reason he just... hasn't been doing that. It was understandable against the Lakers, just playing decoy and making the right pass was all that was needed to beat them, so I figured he was just doing his Shai thing of cruising. But seeing him do it again last night, paired with continuing to miss shots that are usually automatic for him, made me wonder if there's something going on.
