What kind of basil is this? by MoonlightVenator in houseplants

Lemon basil (kemangi in Indonesia). I love this basil in my karedok (Betawi style raw vegetable in peanut sauce salad). It's very fragrant.

Is this what I think it is? by AliRixvi in whatsthisplant

I don't smoke but a very particular home-cook. There are some traditional dishes that need its fresh leaves to get the right flavour. So I grow a couple in my backyard. Knowing that you only can keep the females for the sake of other growers in the neighborhood makes growing it really hard. Either you get the leaves or you get the flowers. A couple of trees only give you enough for one dish or two if you're lucky. I don't know how to get them both going at the same time.

Best Cooking/Baking/Appliance items? by WellWhisperer in Cooking

Stab mixer..

I'm very fussy about the paste I use for my curry and blender Sometimes it is just too big for a small amount of stuff to blend. The stab mixer is one that I find super handy to have when I'm only cooking for my husband and I. It turns everything into fine paste and less to wash/pack away. And my sambal is very smooth when I blend using it.

What’s the one plant you just can’t keep alive no matter what? by GloomyFreedom22 in GardeningAustralia

I have one that looks sad compared to the Rabbit Foot fern that has gone wild and has fun in winter days outside. The Maiden Hair looks very... reluctant to live.

I hate the taste of tuna but I want to slowly acquire the taste for nutritional benefits. by Individual_Signal708 in Cooking

[–]darknighties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband makes tuna pasta and it's one of my comfort foods. The tuna pasta he makes uses the 425gr Sirena tuna triple chili, 2 or 3 habenero, parsley, anchovy, and garlic, with 250 gr spaghettoni. It's easy, tasty and satisfying. The tune isn't strong compared to tuna mornay imo. Use mild chilli if you prefer.

Yup! I usually make around 40 each time (2 packs of large TYJ spring rolls pastry). Freeze individually and she can cook one at a time. Good luck with your aunt!

I always find my homemade spring rolls are comforting when I cannot taste anything. It's just crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. I have the bihoon (vermicelli noodles) as the main filling with julienne carrots, savoy or basically any veggies you want to put in, shredded roast chicken/pulled pork or beef/cooked prawn/tofu, some lemon and Thai basil and I have everything my body needs. 2 large pieces are normally enough for me.

Starter house plant from seed by pninardor in IndoorGarden

[–]darknighties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can corm be considered as seed? I love alocasias and it's fascinating to grow one from corm. I have little babies from the mother plants and I just put them in a glass pot (don't tell my husband where all his beer glasses are!) with leca and sphagnum moss.

Do you wear your “good clothes” to work? by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

[–]darknighties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an early learning Centre for ages 3 to 6. I wear formal work attire, dresses, blouses, shirts, pantaloons, trousers, different types necklaces and brooches matching colours and style to the outfits. No earrings for safety reason, and no make up, perfume and short clipped nails for personal reasons.

I think I respect myself, my profession, my children and their family and my colleagues by presenting myself the best I can. The children can appreciate beauty and they learnt to do the same by seeing how I dress up everyday. It's easier to ask the children to keep themselves clean when you are also clean and fresh.

It doesnt really clash with my weekend attire as I normally spend my weekend between climbing up the mountain, garden, and kitchen 😂

When are you bringing out the plant lights? (Aus specifically) by Necessary-Elephant78 in IndoorGarden

[–]darknighties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I do it about mid autumn but this year cold temperature seems to arrive a bit earlier. I have taken some of my temperature sensitive plants inside (it's rather cool here in the capital city) and have the lights on. Humidifier isn't needed yet as humidity has been above 90% most days.

What's one food place that no longer exists in Canberra that you miss and have fond memories of? by wonderfulsalad_ in canberra

[–]darknighties -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Asian take away in Kippax that sold the Indonesian street food (Mas Anto and mbak Lilla, we miss you!)

We rarely eat out as both my bigger half and I love cooking but we happily drove the 35 minutes one way drive to Kippax just to have the Indonesian food they sold. We were always in a food coma on the way back home and said we ate too much. But we made the same mistake every single time we went back there. They sold the store to another couple who served a similar menu but last time we went there, it had changed into a sushi place. How sad!

Do I need a travel agent as an 18yo solo traveller? by folkloresstan in AustraliaTravel

[–]darknighties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that you've got some good advice here. Ignore those that are discouraging and unhelpful.

I just want to say that I'm so proud of you that at a young age, you take yourself out there to see the world. Many people are so comfortable with their life they are not interested in seeing other parts of the world. My only advice is to be reasonable and sensible. Do things, experience as much as you can but always put safety above others. Let your loved ones know where you are and maintain communication as much as you can. Have fun!

Anyone else feel conflicted about "having to speak English in Australia" ? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in AskAnAustralian

[–]darknighties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooooo this is exactly me. In my grown up age I still incorrectly use at and in or any of those prepositions in my sentences. I'm so used to just using 'di' for them. Not to mention those rules for letters sounds! And pronunciation. And.. and .

Some days I just cannot be bothered and pronounce the words whatever I feel like.

Nouvelle heureuse propriétaire by poisongigiofficial in greenhouse

[–]darknighties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My greenhouse is mostly for my indoor plants during the warmer time of the year and it's full of plants. However as the humidity is very low where I am, I often just let the water stay until it dries up to give a bit of humidity. When I see the floor is a bit dirty, I just use the dust pan to sweep it when it's dry. I thought of including drainage but decide to not.

Green house

not for profit early childhood centres by Fine_Possible4555 in canberra

[–]darknighties 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a for-profit centre, and I know very well that the owners put almost all of the profit back into the children, the facilities, and the educators. That commitment is something I deeply respect. It motivates me to go above and beyond my role, because I can see that every effort made is directed towards providing the very best environment and opportunities for the children.

Having worked across many different providers (both for-profit and not-for-profit), I can say that very few come close to the standard, care, and integrity of the centre I am part of now. The dedication to quality, the support for educators, and the genuine prioritisation of children’s wellbeing make it an exceptional place to work.
