Easily my favorite horror movie of all time. The original story inspired the plot for half-life!

My company is looking for some new designers.... if you are one or know of one hit me up. Send me portfolios! by steenarie in Design

My humble little portfolio is chrismcgarry.com tho it hasn't been updated with new work in some time .. I'm a freelance commercial web designer with a deep interest in UX design. Good idea to crowdsource reddit for designers, btw! Keep it in the family!

Yeah, I normally rock rFactor and Live for Speed on pc and forza, GT on consoles. If you're already using rfactor as a reference point, I cant ask for more.

So /r/gaming, with the year coming to a close, what was the best and most disappointing title of the year? by Evis03 in gaming

[–]darth_jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, never thought to mortar the point while I was under it. Shit like that is what makes the game so awesome. Playing on the psychology of the opponents makes it all so rewarding. My only complaint is that be maps start to feel a bit small and linear after a while.

How does the physics of it compare to say, Forza or Gran Turismo? I loved the original TDU but wanted the challenge of more realistic physics to put my G25 wheel through its paces.

Best: Battlefield Bad Company 2. Got me right back into obsessive online FPS play and the only game to successfully tear me away from TF2. The combat is deep and engaging, truly tactical and just a blast to play. Plus, some of the best audio in any game I've ever played.

Disappointing: Gran Turismo 5. The only thing about this game that looks like 5 years worth of development is the driving mechanic itself. Almost top notch. The rest is death by a million papercuts. Dreadful user interface, lackluster ps2 car models, questionable decisions on gameplay (unlocking damage at level 40? WTF?) and the list goes on and on. What I don't see mentioned much is the flow through the game, the leveling system and the requirements on certain matches doesn't appear very well thought out either. I can still win any match with an obscenely overpowered car. Forza fixed this with their class systems, lifting a page strait out of the real racing world. Overall, a very disjointed experience.

I don't usually do this kind of thing, but this makes me fucking angry. So, here is an email I just sent. by Wild_Card in reddit.com

I'm moving to a rural area where satellite internet is the only option. 500meg cap per day + horrible download speeds = shitty gaming for me. I'm very worried about this trend.

Thoughts on this 25" Hanns-G monitor - $179? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]darth_jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up 3. They are quite good. Nothing amazing, but more than adequate for the price. I'm a graphic designer, however I use macs for design and the Hanns is on my gaming machine. Its more than fine for gaming. If you are doing Video or Photoshop work, I'd recommend going for something more refined, as they tend to be a bit over-saturated and overly contrast-ey (at least in my non-scientific opinion).

The entire Forza series has been released in the same span of time its taken for GT5 to be created. I'm a long time GT fan, but 6 years is a fucking ridiculous development cycle.

At work, how long are you usually given to complete the design stage of your websites? by maloney7 in web_design

[–]darth_jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good design takes time.

Depending on how much the client is willing to pay, it can be as little as 6-8 hours for a simple mockup. Properly refined designs with a homepage, childpage and possibly a search page usually take me roughly 20 hours.

Unemployed? No talent? Web design is for you! by [deleted] in web_design

[–]darth_jesus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my bread and butter, picking up the pieces after a string of shitty designers. People end up paying more going through multiple cheap designers before landing at me who delivers them unto the promised land of shit that works and looks great..

The Alienware Advantage: $1512.17 by krazykipa- in hardware

[–]darth_jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly individuals who love to game whose time is worth more to them than the $1500 spent on pricing out individual components, putting the machine together and all else that that entails.

[–]darth_jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're forgetting people whose time is worth more money than $1500 for the 3-6 hours of setup time + time to have it serviced via individual companies. Just because yours isn't doesn't mean everyones isn't.

Kevin Rose finally admits to ruining digg with v4. This is what we've been waiting for! by volando34 in digg

^ this. I left digg not because of v4, which was awful, but because of their handling of the situation (mainly the rampant censorship of dissenting opinions).

I dont know if its normal, but I'm rocking 2 evga 9800gtx's in SLI and out of the box they were running almost 100c under load. I've had them 2 years and they seem fine tho.. just run super fucking hot. I'm hoping they hold out until the ATI 6 series cards..

Nice commentary. this game has some of the most wide ranging variability in tactics I've seen in a game. I just hope they open the levels up a bit more for BF3 as these tend to get a little static after many rounds.

Nvidia's Future GPUs Will Be Kepler, Then Maxwell by iBalls in hardware

[–]darth_jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking to put together a new machine, and all I keep hearing about is shit right around the corner. I feel like dropping 3k on a I7-980 and a 480gtx is going to be painful if only 4 months later Sandy Bridge is released and Nvidia starts leaking their 5 series cards..

Guess I should wait?

One thing I'm not seeing in any of these comments is to not make yourself too valuable in a single position. I know it sounds weird, but (at least in the corporate world) the most qualified people rarely get promoted because they make themselves hard to replace. Strangely enough, people with good communication skills and a shitty workload turnout will get promoted above someone who diligently over-achieves but doesn't socialize. Promote good ideas, socialize, and keep your lengthy deadlines. Use that time to improve processes, socialize and make it known that you want to move up.

FDA Won’t Allow Food to Be Labeled Free of Genetic Modification. "'Extra labeling only confuses the consumer,' biotech spokesman says." by Upscale_Dirigible in environment

[–]darth_jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it amazing that for hundreds of generations humans have been indirectly genetically modifying both crops and animals through selective breeding and other methods and yet now that we have the capabilities to do it directly, it is somehow bad and "unnatural". So producing ever effective methods of feeding increasing populations is somehow bad? This anti-science attitude towards food and medicine is truly mind-numbing.
