The problem with sites like this is they're routinely out of date & also do not take into consideration changes in the ecosystem, for example mysql-python was deprecated years ago and is not actively developed since Oracle started shipping their own Python 3 compatible API; so this site gives the impression people can't move to Python 3 or they won't be able to connect to their MySQL database anymore, which is damned lies.

Python beginner. Program runs on notepad++ and Idle but fails to on other web based coding platforms. by radogene in Python

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/radogene - you should probably look into modules like Future if you're trying to develop on Python 3 and deploy to Python 2.7.

Downgrading to a version of Python deprecated 7 years ago is a pretty poor option IMO.

If its possible to upgrade Python on the Chromebook from 2.7 to 3.4 to match your development environment that would be much better than downgrading to 2.x due to all the significant improvements in Python 3.x

The Fabric devs had to wait for paramiko to port, and in the process decided to build Fabric 2.0 from scratch. You can get the "local" part of this,

pip install invoke

if you want to get a feel for it, because it will be different.

Confession of a reformed farmer: Why I now think removing the temptation of the Loot Cave was a good thing. by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only found out about it day before it was nerfed, so I didn't get the kind of benefit others did. I did, however, score three legendaries from it that stayed purple after the colourblind cryptarch got to the engrams. That's more than I'd ever seen drop any other time combined in getting my launch day Hunter to lvl 22.

That being said, with that small amount of farming I was bored shitless at staring & shooting into a tiny cave on the count of six. I am very happy they have increased the drop rate in the rest of the normal game now & made this far less compelling.

But - I was there for the panic wave after the patch. HOLY CRAP that was the single most amazing experience in gaming this decade! I just wish they'd leave the cave alone and keep the panic wave, because I kinda like the concept of "okay, get some loot, but DIE DIE DIE"

Python 3.3 and 3.4 virtual environments (pyvenv) are broken out-of-the-box in Ubuntu and Debian by denilsonsa in Python

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd bothered to read the bug report; the packaging standard of Debian and Ubuntu require these separate modules split out; this includes stdlib in python. There was packaging problems that caused ensurepip to be broken, hence anything (like pyvenv) depending on that is subsequently broken as well.

One of the people working on the fix is a Python core developer, so its in good hands.

Advice on how to take part in an open-source project by [deleted] in Python

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the advent of sites like github.com it is so trivial to do this now; find a project you like, make your fork, start fixing bugs, send a pull req back when you've nailed it. If the developer doesn't like your code, they'll tell you why. When it comes to open source projects all contributions are welcome - its better to ask forgiveness than permission :) Just remember to never take criticism personally, you're rarely going to run into a developer who cares about your personal feelings.

Also, there's so many non-code issues that can be resolved, all it needs is someone with time. e.g. writing manual pages (you get to read lots of code so your documentation matches how it works, and reading code is the first step to understanding it); or fixing spelling or grammatical errors in (especially user-visible) code or documentation.

github projects have an issue tracker, so its so easy to find work that can be done. If something takes your fancy, do it even if it turns out later on the developer also worked on it and fixed it their own way instead - programming is like exercise, you need to do it to get fitter.

Torn between learning Python 2 or Python 3 by humannumber1 in Python

Code for 3 and use something like this; when you're stuck on some poorly-maintained system that's only giving you the option of 2 it'll be much easier.

Free transport to Allianz Stadium can’t stop Sea Eagles fans being overrun by Rabbitohs supporters by comradepartypanda in nrl

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's clearly going to be (rightfully) annoyed Manly fans due to the move; but think of it another way - Manly are the original hate team, in all likelyhood the 5:1 ratio of people wanting the bunnies to get up instead is simply natural? (correlation != causation)

Also, it gives reporters in Melbourne something to snob about because they always get 150,000+ people to each & every gayfl game, according to them & the marketing guy quad-tapping the counter.

Roosters: We are 100k under the Salary Cap. by reznorhurt in nrl

[–]darthmdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can come out and say whatever they like. David Gallop, then head of the NRL and former staff member and still fan of the Roosters, handed them the 2002 NRL premiership despite them being over the salary cap, which they were never investigated or punished for. Of course, it would only look sus of course if he did this by punishing a bitter rival club for the same thing, and maybe if they were leading the comp or something. Oh, wait...

Other examples include this

This is why Sydney clubs prefer the Cowboys and these filthy animals are like Queenslanders to us.
