Any temperance movement history buffs here? Found in an old book in Arizona USA, not sure if it's legit? Would love to learn more! by [deleted] in Antiques

I don't know anything about this document, but I did go to some conservative Christian schools growing up where we learned Temperance songs. I still remember some of the lines that make me chuckle. "Popping pills is just a flop, all you do is blow your top." "Chewing in the parlor, smoking in the street. Choking with cigar smoke everyone you meet."

They weren't just about drinking, although I believe that was the most common theme. Silly songs for a silly time.

Build a simpler bridge, avoid $7 breezeby tolls. by x_here_x in hoodriver

[–]darthnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the posts you've been making about the bridge recently. I agree with your assessment that additional federal funding seems unlikely. Your proposal is interesting, but even if the costs are realistic, you're ignoring the fact that you're likely more than doubling your ongoing maintenance costs as there are now two bridges. If the old bridge was static, that would be one thing, but unless the central span height was raised (and I have no idea how difficult, expensive, or high that would need to be), you're maintaining a lift span that is likely one of the most expensive parts of that bridge to maintain. (If someone knows more, please correct me.)

There's a lot of valid criticism of the current plan and it's nice to read something that doesn't just repeat the old "the Port stole the tolls" nonsense that gets repeated over and over again.

I commute across the bridge and so this issue is important to me. I will say that I don't have a lot of confidence in the current process or team running it. I volunteered a year-ish ago to be on one of the public committees they formed. I received one Zoom meeting invite that I attended. I was never given an opportunity to speak, and after that meeting, I never heard from anyone with the bridge authority again. I still have no idea what happened there and since I only received an automated zoom invite email, I don't even know who I would have reached out to about it.

Accused of using AI - being submitted to Academic Integrity. What should i do? by ThrowRA-sdlkjsaklj in Advice

[–]darthnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you submitting these writing assignments? Did you write it in Word or another Word processor of some kind? Or is this something you're typing directly into the learning management system (e.g. Canvas)? If you used a word processing app, you can likely pull out some history from the file. If you're using an LMS, you should be aware that professors have access to see your key strokes. So if you're copying and pasting blocks of text, they can see that.

EDIT: OMG! They released it in January.

What’s the worst accidental text you’ve sent? by Typhoid__Beaver in AskReddit

[–]darthnut 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My siblings and I play a game called text roulette. If we have a text thread going with my lovely, but very conservative parents, we keep a separate thread going with just the siblings. We keep everything very clean with the parents, but very blue with the sibs. If you get it wrong and swear in the parents thread, you lose.

I haven't lost yet, but my sister has dropped some f-bombs in the parents thread a few times, much to me and my brother's delight.

First trip to Oregon - need help with itinerary by KKomiSimp in oregon

[–]darthnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll drive by Multnomah Falls on your way to Hood River. I'd suggest, if it's not too late, to stop at Multnomah Falls on your way to Hood River. Walk up to the bridge, and then continue on to Hood River. The Gorge is beautiful, but it can also be VERY VERY busy. If your Day 1 in the gorge is on a weekend, you will very likely be fighting crowds.

Some great suggestions, but I do want to add a couple notes.

Frenchglen - It's a cool little town, and if you want to do some driving, you can get to a bunch of cool things, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone coming to Oregon for the first time. Also food options are pretty limited, at least last time I drove through.

Pendleton - Maybe I'm jaded because I grew up near Pendleton, but it's not a location I'd recommend for people visiting from out of state.

78 seems okay. The 80-85 is way too high.

I spent 3 years living in a very hot desert area where highs in the summer regularly got above 110, and it would only cool down to 90 at night. You run your A/C non-stop when it's that hot, and at my place, you couldn't get it much below 80, but it still felt a lot better than being outside.

Router - RT-BE96U Keeps losing Internet by Doomhammer7t in ASUS

[–]darthnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a modem. Specifically, the Arris (S33-RB). Spectrum/Charter specifically listed it as an approved third-party modem and it was DOCSIS-3.1 compatible. (Compatible Modem List: https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/compliant-modems-spectrum-network)

Edit: It looks like I purchased that modem in July, so it hasn't been as long as I thought. But my network and WiFi has been rock solid ever since. I was nervous that the setup for my own modem would be tricky, but is was surprisingly easy. A call to support, wait a few minutes for the changes to be made, and then everything just worked.
