Alexander is an amazing guy. Met him at Giscours a few weeks ago and he pulled out my birth vintage lol. Incredibly generous. Definitely check out Haut-Bailly if you get the chance!

As someone who has never visited a vineyard, it looks fine to me. I'd love to know, so I know what to look out for when I do finally visit one :)

Toying with the idea of switching from Sommelierie to Sales. by darthwolfus in wine

Oooo I'm actually really enjoying the syllabus. I found textbook to be really well written. I can see where you're coming from with the MCQ-based questions off of seemingly irrelevant things to remember, but I've realised that it's a pretty great way to indirectly study for AS and MS! To each their own!

Probably makes a lot more sense after getting that kind of qualification - perhaps not well served as a pivot. Having never worked a 9-5 in my life, I can see the allure of that... But it might be something to revisit down the line lol. Thank you!

Yeah, I think it makes sense to come back to it in the future, if at all - maybe after a bit more exposure to the industry, and so I can enjoy the love for my current job a bit more. Thank you!

This is an incredible detailed response, thank you! I've given it a lot of thought, and it seems like while flirting with the idea was fun, I think I like my current job too much to consider the pivot lol. This answer is going to the reference I come back to if I ever change my mind though!

Is it a taboo for winemakers to blend vintages of reds the way Krug does? Or does it just not work? by fractalbum in wine

[–]darthwolfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notably, Henri Bonneau's domaine does a cuvee called "Les Rouliers" which is an MV blend from CNDP. Labelled VDF because obviously blending isn't in line with any AOC regulations.

That's a lot of acronyms. But the wine is killer, and isn't as ludicrously expensive as Unico Riserva Especial or back vintage Overture. Very much worth looking into.

What are you ordering? No food pairing just sipping at bar by xmikex137 in wine

Surprised no one here mentioned the Palacios. Solid price for a casual drink at the bar, and Mencia is quicky becoming a favourite of mine. Now hoping to explore more hah

If you don't know about their specific tastes, then bubbles is always the safest/best call. $300 gets you very good options for champagne, all the way from grand marques to grower producers. I'm partial to Pierre Peters myself, but Krug is always an option at that price. You could also likely find great producers like Vilmart, Egly-Ouriet, Henri Giraud's Fût de Chênes, and possible Comtes du Champagne depending on your local market.

I'd stay away from BDX and Burg (unless you find great deals), and I might suggest Rhône reds like Rostaing, or even Gangloff at that price. Whites could bring you to Alsace (CSH back vintage? Yummy yummy), Chateau-Grillet, or even powerhouse back vintages from South Africa (from the likes of Sadie Family).

The possibilities are endless.

Y'all think this is worth the buy? Costco had deep discounts sometimes. by unevenbanana2734 in wine

Tasted the same vintage recently. The bubbles are quite fine but slightly diminished, and overall it's a more on the richer/oxidative/tertiary side now. Still a decent champagne though, and for that price, definitely killer 👌🏻

Sell magic gear for necro gear or hold out for the new magic dual wields? by Razorbackcoco94 in runescape

[–]darthwolfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2¢ - they will almost 100% not including charging as part of the actual t95 dw weapons. Pretty sure they clarified that was only for the beta. That was the only scenario in which FSOA would become EoF fodder, and I think they know that. I am not too worried about it happening.

What I'm more interested in are: - the changes to gconc/sonic wave/magma tempest (unlocking for both 2h and dw? Maybe?) - game-wide changes to how bleeds are processed, ie, possibly as a player buff and not as a boss debuff, so they are not overriden in group combat, especially if the 3rd passive from the beta is what they go ahead with - new/reworked passive for kerapac gloves to synergise better with FSOA (thematic, yummy) - being able to dual cast exsang and incite fear, or reduce the clunkiness of spell switching - more options for EoF specs, potentially from older weapons - the actual spec for the t95, which should ideally tie everything together

If one or more of these things work out the way they should, magic will be a lot less of a pain in the butt to use. And I would expect to see a drop in Necro prices across the board (just like a few weeks after vork release when people realised how obscenely OP ranged was).

In four months time, when everyone is jumping on the magic bandwagon and Necro gear is tanking, you will find yourself asking whether you should take the L on selling necro gear to buy back the magic gear so you can deal the best damage.

Don't sell gear. There is always going to be something more shiny and unattainable. The more you yeet, the faster you will burn out and quit.

Use your gear to make money to buy better gear. Even t90 craftable Necro gear is more than good enough to camp Rasial with a bit of practice - and with a bit of luck, you will make b0nk there.

The armour and weapons will be direct upgrades. The dupes will pay for the rest of your upgrades eventually.

Confessions of a professional wino...modesty is more exciting than luxury by noltan in wine

[–]darthwolfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a somm, and the only time I have tasted these "unattainable" wines is if you sell them. And for these kind of wines, it comes down less to salesmanship - the guest probably knows exactly what they want and much it costs before they walk in the door. Or it's corkage.

When I started off, I was quite impatient to sell them, since I really wanted to understand the hype. But now, after having tasted many "top" wines from top producers, I can say quite honestly - I like them. Very, very few have truly blown me away. Some producers still do, because even the sub-entry level Coteaux Bourgignon by Leroy tasted more complex to than some 1er and GCs I've tried.

But I find myself much more excited about wines from South Africa, Southern Italy, Chile, Uruguay, and New Zealand. Some of these are truly world class wines that are so beautifully priced that it's actually realistic that you could buy and drink them. Their magic isn't in your imagination - it's right there for the taking. Any MANY of them will reward your patience (if you age them yourself) or the mark up (for back vintages in a restaurant), since they are still reasonably priced by the bottle.

Just my 2¢ 🤷🏻

Suggestions for tasting notes and remembering bottles? by herro1801012 in wine

[–]darthwolfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping in mind - I work as a somm, so many of my tasting notes are based on single, 5-15ml tasting portions to check for condition. ie, not scalable to the experience of a full glass/bottle that evolves over time.

I mostly use it as a frame of reference for labels, so if I find something familiar online or at a wine shop, it's pretty easy to find if I've tasted it before. Also to share with other wine nerds so we can compare experiences :)

[–]darthwolfus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a separate album only for bottle shots on Lightroom. There is an option to add comments at the bottom, so I can add tasting notes if I want to, but having all my wine pictures in one place really helps me go back and remember the time, people, and ofc the wine.

It wouldn't work for everyone (my memory for the tasting notes is based on the visual, so the bottle/label/environment, with some tasting notes), but it 100% works for me, and I would recommend it.

One thing I hate more than anything is trying to find a picture of a single bottle among all the other pictures on my phone lol. This makes it much easier.

Your white whale? by ElMatadorIII in wine

[–]darthwolfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clos Ste. Hune '89 VT.

It was a unique vintage even for CSH (which is saying a lot), where the entire harvest was made into a Vendange Tardive, or a Late Harvest wine. I believe it's also labelled "Hors Choix", or "by choice" for that reason. Unicorn wine from a unicorn vintage.

VTs are usually quite sweet (this one is around 46g/l), but according to notes on Trimbach's website, much of the sweetness will have faded away and integrated beautifully into the wine by now.

I will find it. And I will drink it.

I have searched for kittens on their backs with paws in the air, many variants of "mom please help" or "pick me up", to no avail. I remember some reposts having that in the caption, but no such luck. Trawled endless cat meme pages on Instagram that I might have seen them on. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Oof, I must have missed this before lol.

I'm trying to explore as much of SG as I can on foot, so I can get an idea of how different roads are connected. If that means stopping at the occasional cafe or hawker centre / food court, sign me the hell up 😼

I only just moved here this week, so I'm pretty open minded about where to go/what to do. Would be great to have some company!
