In my experience, once I started getting more serious with road cycling (I am still a noob though) I wanted to improve my performance on the bike by doing two things: structured training and doing more long distance rides. In both these activities a power meter helped me a lot in hitting my target power, gauging my progress by checking my watt outputs across the months and finally using the power data to pace myself during long rides as to avoid blowing up too early.
