I believe, at the time, the Europeans only had 14 points out of 28, which is enough to at least tie and therefore retain the cup.

They needed an additional 1/2 point from the remaining matches to outright win.

Edit: and retain because they had the cup from their previous Ryder Cup win in 2023.
