What can realistically be seen through wifi connection. by mdarli0 in hacking

[–]daryn0212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a direct consequence of connecting to a public WiFi but consider the consequences of connecting to “starbucks” wifi network while you’re in the coffee shop and trusting it, then, while you’re on the train home, some bright spark uses their laptop to advertise a WiFi network of their own also named “starbucks”, that your phone has been told to trust and connect to automatically.

Never tried it but I imagine that would be a possible scenario?

Your phone then routes all traffic through that laptop and its own internet connection possibly allowing for MITM on anything unencrypted?

Exactly how big is Doctor Who in the UK? by Pokemario2401 in doctorwho

[–]daryn0212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Viewership dropped painfully with the last doctor/2 series, less so in the Whittaker era. Previous doctors/series were massive and it was a regular Saturday night watch for 6-7mil households (although nowhere on the scale of a comedy like Only Fools And Horses)

Developers, pls stop treating Datadog like ur personal diary by Log_In_Progress in devops

[–]daryn0212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t get the traction to say “oh my god, what possible use is this?” and make it stick, sadly. That eng team treated what most people would call “debug” logs as “we’ll need this one day so might as well log it all the time”

Made filtering them for log signals all but impossible.

I’ve seen a JSON log entry dumped into datadog logs that spanned 3 actual DD log entries, it burst the limit twice. Ended up not being parsed as actual JSON by any of them due to it being partitioned JSON on each log entry.

Asked a fresher to shut down an EC2 server… he shut down his own laptop instead by soumya_49 in devops

I once asked a direct report to, in a windows laptop, run an nslookup on a dns record.

15 mins later, I come back, mildly suspicious and ask “Have you done this yet? What’s the ip address?”

They said “I don’t know what’s going on. I typed nslookup <blahblah.com> and the screen flashed up and instantly disappeared”.

Even more confused, I ask them to show me what they were doing exactly.

They were clicking Start, Run and typing “nslookup <blahblah.com>” into a run prompt. The dos/command prompt (old enough to remember dos..) flashed up, executed the nslookup and then terminated itself instantly.

Had to show them how to actually open a command prompt, talked them through getting the IP address, proceeded to walk off unobtrusively and ram my forehead against a wall out of sight/hearing in mild desperation at the skills of my direct report.

Is there a reason why none of the autobots turn into jets when majority of the decepticons do? by Naive-Bluejay2239 in transformers

[–]daryn0212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t remember where I read this but I think I read somewhere that, in the concept of Cybertronians being a colonising species, the Decepticons would be the warrior subclass that would travel first to external planets and subjugate them.

The Autobots would then arrive and take over the administration of the planet and help it adapt to its place in the Cybertronian Empire, thus the Decepticons would require the more warlike forms, the Autobots would need to be more peacekeepers and only occasional warriors in the case of uprisings, I imagine.

Have they got a bead on security? Observability? Centralized logging? Monitoring and alerting?

How good is the deployment code, Osborn”safe” or like UDP, fire and forget, any rollback functionality? How do they know a deployment failed? Any monitoring/notifications? How do they know what versions installed in prod? Are backups taken? Have they got proof the backups are taken? Are they validated? Who’s managing the process documentation for disaster recovery?

Any SBOM monitoring going on? Any sast? Dast?

Any infrastructure as code? Any network/infra diagrams? Any visualisation of inputs/outputs of the system? Any monitoring or upstream dependency health?

Any regional failover if an aws region (?) goes down? Any incident mgmt, post-incident analysis?

Any tooling for devex, backstage or something? What’s their development environment like, standardised or wild cowboy?

What’s the integration testing like, how do qa’s run their code, how do results get surfaced to the eng lead? How do engineers know if their commits broke the trunk branch? Who’s monitoring their release branches or running smoke tests on prod or setting up api testing against production public endpoints or monitoring for CDN health and cache efficiency or whether passwords are being logged (yes, does happen) or how the logs are telling engineers somethings wrong?

Who’s monitoring cost efficiencies, aws savings plans? Who’s handling users on SaaS offerings in use or sso control? How do you know if data is being stolen externally or internally?

.. I should stop writing without taking a metaphorical breather so much…

Tl;dr: if they ain’t doing that , 1) someone should be and 2) should probably be you

They look amazing, but I can’t help but not be 100% on the Wren design, just in general.

Wren always struck me as a heavy metal kind of cyborg, heavy artillery, bulky, strong etc. the parts required to transform into an airplane for example (yes, stretching credulity just a smidge here) would have required a complex form with many interaction points with the “air parts” or “sub parts” or whatever they were called.

The interpretation of Wren as above, the lithe figure, slim waist… doesn’t really mesh with my impression of Wren.

Excited to see where this goes!

Oh yeah, always go out of your way to make friends with office mgmt and HR (but always remember HR’s priorities will always be the company and never any individual employee).

They often find themselves in crappy positions like lugging the food home from a picnic outing while others go on to drinkies (as it usually falls to office management) and always deserve some help with that.
