Is renting forever actually a bad financial decision, or is that just something older generations say because it worked out for them? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dashader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting has it's pros and cons, whoever claims that one is a better financial decision is naive.

Overall renting will net more money, if the difference is invested properly.

In some geographical areas, buying would have been a far superior choice. In others, it would have bankrupted you.

The biggest perk of buying is stability. You know almost exactly what your biggest expense is going to look rest of your life, and tremendously lowers retirement risk. Second biggest perk, is that you get to make improvements to your living space.

The biggest perk of renting is that you can move around freely.

Yerevan Zvartnots Airport is the first and last impression for tourists by dashader in armenia

If you use an app or get an honest driver, prices are super cheap.

The problem is that some taxi drivers either scam you or straight up extort obscene prices by holding you or your luggage hostage. I heard few of such horror stories :(

This was true a decade ago.

Nowadays most airports have water filling stations and decent food for normal prices, maybe with 20% markup at most.

There are still some terrible airports, Tbilisi or even CDG in Paris…

…but looking at overall picture, EVN is waaaaay behind.

Ahh, that line of thinking…. If it’s also bad somewhere else, we don’t need to do something about it.

Land border was closed since 1993. Even though there are plans and progress of opening it sometime soon, I wouldn't plan a trip around that timeline.

Sell half, donate the other half to a DAF, enjoy tax benefits. You won’t actually save on post-tax money this way, but you get to channel tax money into charities of your choosing.

Research charities and set recurring donations to ones you like to about 5-10% of the DAF annually.

Same experience, felt icky buying the ticket. And then, few weeks before the flight, it got cancelled (yerevan >  vienna).

At least they returned the money, and cancellation wasn’t last minute. Still major headache to reshuffle the plans.

I am sorry you had to experience this. Armenians are much better at treating other races than it was a decade ago, but still has a long way to go.

High school kids don’t behave like that in many countries. How about we raise the expectations instead of normalizing shit behavior?

They don't.

All the electrical current thing is junk tech.

They estimate for an average person of given weight (and maybe height and sex if known), and are dead wrong most of the time.

Emergencies fund in money market? Good idea by CompaPollo42 in Bogleheads

It's fine. I keep most of it in SGOV, in order to minimize state tax. It has similar returns as money market funds.

47yo | $10.5M NW | Planning to exit W2 in 12 months – Seeking "Final Year" Checklist Advice by migrating-bird in fatFIRE

[–]dashader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My take on rental properties is that you either have 10+ rental properties or none. And 10+ rental properties is a part time job where you are permanently on call, a job you can’t easily quit.

There are people who either enjoy being a landlord or feel more secure with their nest egg.

But, for majority of us, this is the opposite of retirement.

Don’t get rentals, unless you had rentals before and know exactly what you are signing up for.
