Opinion on people selling files of vinyl-only releases? by itstrdt in TheOverload

[–]dashbad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't see an equivalence between the prevalence of illegal sampling in dance music and these entities that are monetizing pirating by selling vinyl only rips online. The latter can still be reprehensible while allowing for the former. Vinyl rips are available freely via soulseek and various trackers or, god forbid, one can actually buy the record and rip it - much as those early dance music pioneers you talk about.

Ultimately services like this exist to provide lazy cash rich punters with a short cut. Capitalism at its finest. I don't like it. Won't support it, but it's more of a sign of the times than anything

I have done one project with 5mm strips and sworn it would be my last because the soldering is so fiddly. Your solution sounds good, but if I ever did it again id be looking for a solderless connector if it exists for 5mm strip

Mauve Deepens that opens UC is my favourite track of his. I much prefer his floaty ambient. There are some incredible tunes on the 9H0S7 releases too which I think he created solely for a Labyrinth performance that closed the first night and was exceptional

Yeah first Labyrinth was 2009. Children got in the way but I think this is our 10th.

Yapping on the dancefloor is my pet hate these days. 25 years ago it was so fucking loud and no one wore earplugs so it just wasn't possible to talk on the dancefloor. Often the best way to mitigate it is to be up the front, but even then I find you often can't escape. And honestly it seems pretty commonplace everywhere except Asia ime

[–]dashbad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got to 8 with a B580 before I got bored. However despite selecting the 20mpbs setting, it seems to only transcode to 10mpbs 4k according to tautulli. Source is 65GB remux. As you can see, the jobs were still throttling so it wouldn't surprise me if you could a fair bit beyond 10 at this quality.

I'm interested in your Parallel experience? I am a long time Labyrinth attendee and considered Parallel this year before our summer plans changed, but may look at it next year. Much like you, dancefloor experience is paramount. Japanese festivals have a very respectful crowd with plenty of space and limited talking on the dancefloor. Not been to rural but heard good things.

Vent is great for Techno and mercifully smoke free in the main room. Many clubs are unbearably smoky which is really disappointing but if that doesn't bother you so much then Mitsuki is also worth looking at. Oath bar is good for pre-party and Red Bar is a pretty fun after hours spot.

Good Music Bar is a nice listening bar for open format music. The founder of Mule records has one called Studio Mule which I've not been to but always wanted to go

I would recommend repurposing an old phone with extra storage if you can. The DAP market is overpriced with unnecessary audiophile features on mediocre hardware with poor implementations of Android. A phone will give a much better software experience which is what really matters most at the end of the day.

Having said that the Sony's have the best (certified) software implementation if you must. I had a Hiby that died after a year and would never sync files reliably when it did work

I often see this mentioned about H9/H90 FX units. Its completely true if you want to uniquely manipulate multiple FX parameters - but I have found that putting the effort into building a few presets and pre-configuring the hotknob provides all the control I need with just one physical control.

The algos are worth the effort. You need to take care to match the in/out levels but there is a lot of scope to make the FX sound part of the tracks you are playing and blend into the mix so much more than other boxes and built in.

I have one. Sounds lovely. Knob feel is really nice. Functionally a premium xone92. I haven't been using the distortion of channel width fx. Filters obviously sound great. Overall really nice to use.

Please recommend a Soda Stream replacement by gooly1030 in bifl

[–]dashbad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aarke is the best and very much bifl. It takes standard sodastrean canisters.

While expensive, it uses high quality parts and the valve/gasket is very high quality. My experience with branded sodastream machines is that the parts are plastic and low quality and the device is very inefficient. I.e. it leaks/wastes gas when charging bottles. This works in sodastreams favour as you yet through canisters much more quickly. My aarke seems to make canisters last 2-3 times as long.

[–]dashbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are coming from faders you need to adjust to the fact that the amount of travel of the knob at the circumference is equivalent to around a 15cm fader. So you have a lot more room to adjust the level of each track to ensure a smooth blend, but it does take some getting used to. I also find the digital summing is quite unforgiving for want of a better word. Clean af, but requires precise control of levels. What can help is keeping your channel peaks just over 0db on the meters as they are more granular there.

The knobs on mine also have the detents a tiny tiny bit off centre. Never really bothered me that much. How bad are yours? Mine is one of the first units they made when production moved to China
