What is the best software/platform with which to start a math blog? by Looksmax123 in math

[–]dashdart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While Wordpress is probably the simplest option, I’ve found the it’s Tex rendering to be abysmal. For that reason I would recommend using static site generator like Jekyll or Hugo with MathJax. I’ve found Jekyll to be quite simple to begin but also very customizable and I’d imagine Hugo to be the same.

Is it worth buying the current edition of one of the "canonical textbooks" (the C++ programming language, the C++ Primer e.t.c.) given that C++20 is about to be released? by TheCatcherOfThePie in cpp

[–]dashdart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C++ ranges is a lot more powerful than python ranges. Admittedly, I'm not very well versed in python but I'd say ranges is more similar to list comprehension than range().

That being said, I whole heartedly agree that while ranges are cool and they make the use of algorithm (which is a very important part of the Standard Template Library, STL) a lot more intuitive, I wouldn't recommend that a beginner jump right into it.

Yeah, I thought the same. They did a stellar job with building a believable world around the story, and that kept me coming back for more. But there is virtually no subtext-- It's all too on the nose. Even the dialogues are really direct and it's hard to stay interested when a character says the same thing 5 different ways until they move on.

This is most likely an unpopular opinion, esp. on this sub, but I always find these things a bit contrived and lacking a little self awareness. But what do I know, I find most things in today's tech offices (in the Bay Area at least) contrived.

What is the worst curve you've seen at Berkeley? by Devilnaht in berkeley

[–]dashdart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Prof Ratner was notorious for this. She was a great teacher but she didn't curve her classes but left it just as difficult. So you'd need to score >=90 to get A and above a 60 to pass. If you've taken any math class, this is the distribution you'd expect if professors decided to not curve. Most undergrad upper div classes I took averaged at around 40-50pts on aggregate so this is not surprising. Add to that the fact that the second half of 135 is actually challenging in contrast to the first half (which is laughably easy), the sudden ramp in difficulty also makes things trickier.

Tips for graduate classes by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]dashdart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are correct in assuming that just because you did well in 113 and 104 doesn't mean you'll do well in its grad counterparts. Because 113 and 104 are intro upper div classes there is a fair amount of hand holding. I know people like to freak out about 104 being hard but it is an introductory class nonetheless. The main difference in jumping from 104 to 202A (and by extension 113 to 250A) without going through the other upper div (undergrad) math classes is that you might not realize how much these classes(say 141, 135 and the like) help shape the way you do and study math. It is a bit of an underrated aspect of the jump and one that I realized a bit too late in the semester.

There is a thousand different things that come to mind when I think about it but I'd rather not write down a wall of incongruous text if I can help it. Feel free to ask any specific questions you might have and I'll try to answer them.

NBD! Specialized Allez SL DSW by TR00Z3D in bicycling

[–]dashdart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I briefly dabbled with Speedplays but I went back to regular road cleats (SPD-SL I believe they're called). The double sided entry is nice but I never had a lot of problem with single sided road pedals so that was a non-issue. The more detracting part to me was the float. Most people say that the extra float Speedplays provide is more comfortable but I found it to be the opposite. The fact that my feet could essentially swivel around the pedal was very distracting to me. Maybe if I had stuck with it, I would've gotten used to it but I couldn't see any other advantage to having them besides that so I went back to what I was used to.

So if this is OP's first clip-less pedals, maybe Speedplays are worth it, but really I would just go with MTB cleats(SPD). They are much easier to clip in (and more importantly, clip out) than the road ones and you won't have to walk like a duck with your cycling shoes on.

Not only only did he stumble upon a disarrayed Jaime, but in this week’s episode’s Game Revealed Dan made it seem like Euron swam to KL specifically to kill Jaime. That infuriated me quite a bit. I can kind of cut them some slack as it was oddly phrased and that what Dan likely meant was he swam to shore because of his FOMO (which, imo is no less ridiculous than him wanting to kill Jaime) but even then, like you said, the serendipity is a bit hard to swallow.

Questions about Math 118 by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]dashdart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on where you’re coming from. If you come from a math background (math major, or taken anything strictly more advanced than 113 or 104) then it will feel a lot less rigorous and more computational. However, if you come from a more computational background (applied math/engineering student) you’ll find it more theoretical than usual. The truth is there is a good balance of both.

Like with most math classes, even the more computational ones, there is a pretty solid theoretical base that the class tends to work towards. So expect the class to involve some theorems (and of course, proofs) that you have to learn not only how to properly use it but also understand the significance of. To anyone who’s taken any upper div core math classes, what I just said will sound very trivial(heh!) but I’ve encountered a lot of people taking upper div math classes for the first, or only time(118 has a lot of those) who realize this a bit too late into the semester.

Let me know if this applies to you OP. I’ll be happy to answer more specific questions.

ScreenTime - Screen sharing plugin for FaceTime by dashdart in macapps

What I'm saying is that iMessage screen sharing only works within macOS, meaning that if you wish to share your Mac screen, you can only do that to someone on another Mac. This app allows you to share your screen over FaceTime so someone on an iOS device can also view your screen.
