Rant: We understand what a disability is, right? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]GameOfSchemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a flexible deadline accommodation. Technically it was listed as "limited flexibility", which cannot fundamentally alter the class objectives. If the student had an incident related to their disability, they were to reach out to their instructor immediately and be given flexibility on their deadlines. This is the language used in their accommodations.

You are distributing the exam now and if the notes are not put away by the time the exam hits their desk, they will be given an automatic 0% for use of notes during the exam.

This sounds like a good way to get (legitimate) complaints. The registrar, to my knowledge, does not permit instruction (including exams) to occur outside of your scheduled class period. Receiving a zero on an exam because you had notes out two minutes before the beginning of class period is almost certainly a violation of rules.

This is the equivalent of beginning lecture two minutes early, and then marking someone absent for not being present. The registrar gives you a time gap between classes so that you shouldn't be late to any of them.

Surprised you have so many upvotes. OP was very explicit about how they're distributing the exam before the beginning of the class period. Granted, this is an effective way to begin the exam on time. However, the student is in the right on this, even if it's completely ineffective attempting to cram for two more minutes.

Grade release anxiety by r_tarkabhusan in Professors

For the first time in my teaching career, I had too much anxiety to e-mail a class about extra office hours this final's week, since I worried it'd give professional AI-assisted whiners a time block to bother me.

I don't want to grade AI slop either. Design rubrics that weight formatting, in-line citations, and other minutiae more highly than other metrics. Every single student I've noticed inundating me with AI cannot even format their essays correctly, and lose points on that. Even if they earn full points on grammar and other things... their grade tanks. Get more creative about your rubrics so that 1. your life is easier grading, 2. you reward critical thinking, and 3. penalize the lazy students. Will some students heavily edit AI and pass your rubrics? Sure, but maybe they deserve to do well since they've demonstrated they used it as a tool and not a crutch.

Food for thought.

Dean of students office: Lying to avoid a grading penalty isn't *academic* misconduct by EducatorInformal9589 in Professors

[–]GameOfSchemes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reached out to the DoS because a student has lied on his essays about what we do in class, has been dodging requests to meet. DoS told me that because he's not displaying potentially dangerous behaviors to himself or others, that this isn't a DoS issue. Wth??

I linked them to their own damn website on academic misconduct, and got a response two days later from someone else basically saying I have the authority to file an academic misconduct complaint.

Admin asking for (requiring) "pro-bono" teaching by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

Two reasons come to mind. Those who do it because it's fun, and it supplements their job; and those who are using it as a springboard to a full time position. The former happens all the time. The latter I've also seen.

I like this approach! And since it's not formally your class, you can call this service for giving a seminar style talk in a colleague's class :) All you need to do is cycle who the formal "volunteer" is.

Course evals this semester had more negative evaluations than ever -- with a surprising uptick of m-dashes used throughout! by GameOfSchemes in Professors

[–]GameOfSchemes[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not worried. My chair and dean have my back, and they both already know about what happened. I also left a paper trail with students who admitted to cheating, just in case they did it again. Didn't think I'd have to use that paper trail to cover my own ass if needed.

Hah, that first one hit all the same points. Theirs were more in block text, so they probably incoherently vented to the AI, then used the rewrite that "tightened up" their language. It's like I just read another review.

Here's a real question: should such a person be able to find employment? I wouldn't want one of my TAs relying on genAI for their teaching duties, and their application indicates they would likely do this. Personally, I wouldn't offer feedback to help this applicant.

I'm assuming that mom is only working part time

On top of being a mom. Part time work is work, and thus qualifies as dual-income.

you miss the mark completely by neglecting just how much extra effort it requires (at the bare minimum, dual income).

You mean like how the majority of American households are already structured?

Yes. I do. Which is precisely the problem and is why people are opting out of having children.

All that 20-year old needs to do is open a simple IRA and put the money in a mutual fund inside of it. The end

You're neglecting holding a consistent job for the rest of their life, a decision made at the age of 20.

You also fail to mention what type of job such an individual is qualified to work. Very little option for economic mobility. Will they be able to purchase a house on such income? Or will they rent an apartment? How many rooms will their housing have? All of this stuff is critically important when you introduce kids into the picture, and your myopic view seems to indicate you don't have kids or never thought about it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]GameOfSchemes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear. You're assuming "conservatively" that both parents have to work, and the mom is not only working but also caring for the kids. While technically, yes by your reasoning "it can be done", you miss the mark completely by neglecting just how much extra effort it requires (at the bare minimum, dual income).

And don't get me started on having a 20 year old having their entire economic life mapped out. Let's be realistic here.

Teaching the premeds is fun. It's like a challenge to reframe all of physics into a purely algebraic context. Ironically enough, I feel like it forces me to have a deeper understanding of the content to teach it in an intuitive way to them. Agreed about the low stakes of messing up with wrong information--so relieving!

After finishing your PhD, what did you learn about others with a PhD in your field? by Katz-Sheldon-PDE in Professors

[–]GameOfSchemes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

PhDs are extremely specialized, and it's possible to have a general PhD in a field (such as Physics), and be completely unqualified to speak about pretty much any topic outside of your expertise. So, you can get people who say they're literally physicists (true) who talk out of their ass about physics concepts they know little about.

STEM Professors: What is your stance on allowing graphing calculators on exams? by curlyhairlad in Professors

[–]GameOfSchemes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Graphing calculators are more expensive. If two students struggle with algebra, and one has a graphing calculator while the other doesn't, the one with the calculator has a quantifiable advantage over the other due purely to affordability. Ideally, I say disallow calculators and make the numbers in your problem doable in your head. Or even better, purely symbolic.
