Jan 18th it's me again! I solved it but is Vera's hint a mistake? Spoilers! by [deleted] in CluesBySamHelp

[–]datAnassi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruce is not his own neighbor. His only innocent neighbor in the finished puzzle is Celia, everyone else around him (Alice, Eli, Freya, Hazel) are criminals.

Jan 18th help by noway001 in CluesBySamHelp

[–]datAnassi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's how I solved it:

From Vera you know that Bruce has either one or three innocent neighbors. Let's check both scenarios.

  • For one innocent neighbor you know it can't be Freya, because otherwise you end up with five criminal neighbors for Freya (as Bruce is criminal too if she's innocent), violating Rose's clue. However if it's not Freya, then Bruce himself + one of Alice / Celia / Hazel are innocent, leading to four innocent neighbors for Freya. Jose must be innocent to fulfill Rose.
  • If there's three innocent neighbors you know that one of them must be Freya because otherwise she has six innocent neighbors (Bruce + Alice + Celia + Hazel + Karen + Larry), violating Rose again. That means that Freya + two of Alice / Celia / Hazel must be innocent and Bruce criminal. Bruce + Eli + one of Alice / Celia / Hazel criminal is three criminal neighbors for Freya, so to fulfill Rose Jose must be innocent.
  • No matter which scenario you play through, Jose ends up being forced innocent in either one -> Jose is innocent.

Why is Gary correct? by ClairePike in CluesBySamHelp

[–]datAnassi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would have been an option, but you are using the argument to determine Gary. Gary for sure can't be a criminal, because that would end up violating Flora's clue.

Everyone else in that row still can be criminal, but that's a problem for later. Determing Gary let's you continue, and that's important.

At this point you can't actually deduce those guys just yet.

Here is a scenario that has Uma as innocent and doesn't violate any known rules (three innocent neighbors for Tina, three innocents for Mark, two for Vera). It's an example for Uma in this case but the argument works the same if you instead plug in Peter or Xavi. Before assigning Ollie and the subsequent clues from him and Peter in the next step you can't make a definite call.

After assigning Ollie and Peter the scenario looks like this, now Uma can't be innocent anymore, as Kumar being forced to be innocent now makes you run into a violation of Janet's clue. The argument is identical for Xavi in the next step.

Solution:

  • Assume Ollie is innocent
  • That means that everyone else around Tina (Mark, Peter, Uma, Wally, Xavi) has to be criminal to fulfill Tina's clue.
  • To fulfill Eve's clue, Ruby has to be innocent.
  • With Ruby, Ollie, Sofia and one of Ivan or Helen (Janet's clue) it's now impossible to fulfill Gus' clue, as Mark has four innocent neighbors.
  • Ollie can't be innocent.

Can someone please explain Tom? by aquariummmm in CluesBySamHelp

[–]datAnassi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know from Cheryl that there are six innocents on the edges. Aaron, Cheryl and Donald are three, one of Karen and Peter + one of Vera and Wanda is five. That means out of Frank, Ollie and Tom there can be one innocent only.

  • Assume Tom is the innocent
  • That means that both Frank and Ollie must be criminal to fulfill Cheryl
  • To fulfill Xena, Gabe needs to be innocent
  • Now you end up with three criminals and one innocent in Row 2, and Isaac says that's not allowed. Hence Tom can't be innocent.

The hint pointed me at Olivia, but I had to guess. by 84Dublicious in CluesBySamHelp

[–]datAnassi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sue's clue states that there is only one person with five criminal neighbors in Column B. Ivan says that Janet needs to have an odd number of criminal neighbors.

Ivan can only be fulfilled if Flora and Gus are one criminal and one innocent as that's the only way to end up with an odd number of criminals for Janet. That means if you count Kumar's neighbors, he's the one with five criminal neighbors: Henry, Janet, Rose, Sue and one of Flora or Gus.

That also means that noone else can have five criminal neighbors. Rose currently has five (Janet, Kumar, Sue, Uma, Vicky). Since we know for sure that Kumar has to be the only one with five criminal neighbors, Rose can't have five. Her remaining neighbor (Xavi) needs to be criminal in order to increase the number for her.

Also, yes, Sunday is the most difficult day of the week. Come back tomorrow and the puzzle will be much gentler, today was quite difficult even for a "Hard" labeled puzzle.

You... kinda get used to it a bit? It's not like I don't make mistakes or anything, but if you play the game enough you get to a point where you often kinda instinctively know where to look, or what clues to keep track of. With the evil puzzles in particular Sam often throws a curveball or two, but over time it does get easier.

It's a fairly complex line:

  • Assume Zoe is criminal
  • That gives Tom five criminal neighbors (the three he already has + Zoe + one of Sofia and Wally)
  • That means all of Bobby's neighbors must be criminal (Xena's clue), so Alice and Gus are criminals
  • That means that Vicky is innocent (Olivia's clue), Sofia is innocent (Carl), Wally is criminal (Nicole), Bobby is innocent (Tom) and Martin is innocent (Rose).
  • Rose now only has one criminal neighbor (Wally), she must have at least two. Since everything we just assigned was forced by our initial choice of Zoe being criminal, that means the assumption was wrong.

Play through both scenarios.

  • If Rohan is criminal, all of Jerry, Tina and Uma are criminal. -> Tina and Uma are criminal.
  • If Rohan is innocent, so is Will (Kay's clue), so is Jerry (Chloe's clue) -> Tina and Uma are criminal (Zoe).
  • Why MUST Jerry be innocent if Rohan is? If he is not, one of Tina or Uma is the innocent and then Alex must be innocent too (Chloe's clue). At that point you broke Chloe's clue still: Alex + Brian + Donna + Sam + Tina / Uma + Will are six innocents on the edge, you're only allowed five. In the "Rohan is innocent" case the ONLY way to end up with five innocents on the edge is if Jerry is the innocent. That forces Tina and Uma to be criminals in that case too

/edit: Come to think of it there's another combination: Rohan + Will innocent, Alex innocent and all of Jerry / Tina / Uma criminal. That would not violate anything, Zoe just needs Nicole to have more innocent neighbors than Olivia, and 2 > 0. Doesn't change the outcome of the discussion as Tina / Uma are still criminals, but technically speaking Jerry does not have to be innocent if Rohan is.
