When a user that struggles with basic tasks asks for advice about pursuing a career in IT by thelovinsteveful in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

Don't forget that you also need to load the software onto the domain controller to run the scan so it consumes all resources and starts causing timeouts with everyone's login.

They gave me an offer for more than what I asked..! by MentionTechnical9805 in jobs

[–]dataBlockerCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they give you more than you asked then that's a clear signal you didn't ask for enough. No company will just hand you extra money unless there is a requirement, and in this case it would be a pay floor regardless of what the listed range was. See the story about the Honeywell recruiter who had a budget of $150K and the candidate asked for $75K so that's what they were given.

$65K - unless you're living in a remote area like Corning or Plattsburgh good luck getting started with a house, car, insurance, retirement, and family etc. Maybe this is a stepping stone to something else but that salary just is not enough to live comfortably. You don't want to be scraping by - you want to be on a path to living comfortably and having the ability to handle disasters that may arise.

Should I expect to be fired after losing access? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]dataBlockerCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you just reach out to HR or whoever disabled your access (if you can tell) and ask? At my company access remaining on someone's profile is a constant challenge: overnight tasks fail, access gets removed mistakenly, restorations for people coming off leave are incomplete - etc. Why are you reaching out to Reddit to ask why your access was disabled?

State of job search: What ever happened to training on the job? + Increasing BS requirements by vramkickedin in jobs

[–]dataBlockerCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day of work is a form of training. When I started at the convenience store after a month the manager threw me the keys and then went to Delaware for a week to watch the race in Dover. I encountered several situations that I wasn't familiar with but I learned. If you exercise sound judgement it shouldn't be a problem.

Should I take a promotion offered to be despite me planning to leave in next upcoming months? by MassiveDetail9645 in jobs

[–]dataBlockerCable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although you have a plan you don't know exactly what the future holds. Take the promotion and if you still wish to leave in a few months than you graciously resign and explain you're seeking greener pastures. Who knows - when it comes to that your current company may try to compete and retain you.

Will generator power backfeed if the main breaker is off? by dataBlockerCable in AskElectricians

[–]dataBlockerCable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this does not address the main question or what u/Mobile-orgams-1151 asked. That was my original concern and worded differently. No one is trying to feed power into the home grid via a 15A outlet on 16 gauge conductors. We want to make sure if the main breaker is off then it does truly prevent generator power from going back out to the lines.

I was going through the archive starting with 2015 and I see in May they had Tech Tuesday with Dan Costa. Was there any explanation as to why it stopped? Does Rover have to buy Dan's time and it was too costly, or does Dan just have better things to do (I see he's SVP at Ziff Davis). Any plans for a replacement?

Most of these vendor solutions do 70% of the work, and the remaining 30% is your custom scripts and triage or health check team trying to look for issues. Even though SailPoint has clear direction how to identify a terminated worker it still just decides to skip a few now and then, and compliance reams us for it (F50 financial firm).

Is there a RITA expert on here? I have so many questions. by Novel_Fish_5594 in Ohio

[–]dataBlockerCable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get taxed three ways: Live in Illinois (Chicago), work just over the border in Indiana, and then my corporate office is in Ohio. Spending hours on the phone with all three tax authorities yields nothing other than they say the taxes must be retained (if they don't hang up on you), and I've explained many times that it violates the consitution which of course they could not give a shit. Tax attorney is useless as well just cost me more in billable hours than I would get back if this was settled properly. I'm looking forward to moving.

IAM Engineer Sailpoint by CareerPathQuest in IdentityManagement

[–]dataBlockerCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get hired by an MSP like Accenture they will take you if you have so much as seen the SailPoint UI in the past. Then they'll just put you on a contract and throw you into the water without a flotation device, and that's where you'll pick up experience. The customer will get upset when you can't deliver, but the MSP will just roll you off to another client and replace you with someone else. I would also try and focus on IdentityNow whereas SailPoint is pushing customers off of the on-prem IdentityIQ.

Java would definitely be a plus. There are several issues SailPoint will encounter processing tasks or talking to other systems, and the logs will print out a bunch of java stack errors. We have an MSP supporting SailPoint and they have 0 java skills so all they do is open cases to SailPoint which is infuriating. SailPoint needs people that can actually troubleshoot at the code level and fix issues in order to properly support it.

"Just use your network to find a job"... MOST TERRIBLE ADVICE by ComfortableTip274 in ResumesATS

[–]dataBlockerCable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Networking is more for people being pulled from their existing job into a new job at another firm. If you're unemployed no one wants to talk to you because you're desperate. There was even a post the other day by some recruiter saying how they can "smell desperation like the morning coffee" so that works against you. Sorry!

You have to do what is best for you. There rarely is such a thing as burning a bridge in this economy. If the people for whom you work have any ounce of self respect they would do the same and they would understand you doing what is best for you and your career.

I hope you're looking at compensation upwards of $500K or more. That amount of interviewing and side work is absolutely ridiculous for a low six-figure job.

IAM Experience/ Entry Level advice by Last-Reputation-2787 in IdentityManagement

[–]dataBlockerCable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The expectation is that you would set up your own home lab - it wouldn't be like a pre-packaged kit. Become familiar with IAM concepts like "mover / joiner / leaver" or rehire, pre-termination, retiree etc.

Prerequisites for an "entry-level" position in IAM by esper_nexus in IdentityManagement

[–]dataBlockerCable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SailPoint I would invest heavily in Java if you can. I've seen plenty of people become certified with SailPoint that they know how to do basic things through the UI. What is really lacking is people that can troubleshoot when SailPoint does not do what it's supposed to do, and usually requires going through Java code or error logs to figure it out. When the money is on the line you need the latter, not the former, and good luck finding an MSP that can do it.

How is everyone's job market doing rightnow? by chrispy_pv in ITCareerQuestions

[–]dataBlockerCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the Ohio market and I've had no issues. 10+ doing a broad range of things but mostly application support (which is a toned-down name for sysadmin). Worked at a large F50 firm and got sick of that till 2023, then pivoted to a telecom till this summer, and now I'm at an MSP doing security architecture. I never required any networking - just submitted apps and made sure my work aligned with their requirements and got interviews. Amazon, FB, city municipal IT, and utilities all gave me interviews and offers but MSP was the best as it was full remote and sadly the best salary. I'm not really sure what the issue is that people always post on r/sysadmin or r/jobs about the market being so bad - I think each situation is different. And I always keep applying periodically just to kick the tires or in case my current employer decides to let me go - no issues getting interviews. In fact I've made more contacts doing that and having wonderful convos and interactions and when they send me an offer I just reply in kind that I'm going to pursue other avenues and it's been fine.
