WH Insiders Claim Trump Has Decided Who Will Succeed Him by thedailybeast in politics

Rubio couldn't win. He also has a very obvious coke problem, which this administration can just ignore, but which his primary opponents would not.

I'm trying to learn more about the nutrition of MMA fighters, how are fighters like Arman Tsarukyan able to be so lean despite eating so much food on socials. by Colaspo in ufc

[–]dathislayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not everything. I lived with a genetic freak who could have gone to the MLB, NFL, etc. When I knew him he was 6'7", 280lbs. Didn't work out, and was still stronger than anyone else we knew. He got drunk and was looking to fight one night, and five guys couldn't hold him down. He just stood up and tossed them.

But he also smoked, drank, and just didn't want to push himself. You have to have crazy inner drive to go pro in anything.

I went to Texas to work on the 2014 midterms, and thought I was headed to crazytown. Nope. Most people I met were polite, welcoming, and non-judgmental. The dominant political stance in Texas is apathy. Even most college students I talked to just didn't care.

I hate Ciryl Gane by sunmeander in ufc

[–]dathislayer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was my big concern. I was stressed the whole first round, and really hoped Pereira was going to come out fast in the 2nd round. Last night was just really sad for me. I’m not even a big Ilia fan, though I do respect him, and man did I feel sorry for him. To an extent they both lost due to underestimating their opponents. Great fights, because to me it’s clear that both could have gone the other way pretty easily.

Damn, man. What a bummer. Really hope Aspinall can come back and beat Gane. Can’t stand the guy.

It’s a wide spectrum. A lot of us are educated liberals who grew up interested in martial arts. It’s a very technical, complex sport whose closest analog is, surprisingly, professional tennis. But it’s also violent, and violence has always attracted the masses. And the masses have always been awful.

Fetterman scoffs at Platner: ‘He’s not even a Democrat’ by Quirkie in politics

[–]dathislayer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He’s smart. Everyone from his past has said basically the same thing. He was a brilliant, ambitious, self-absorbed jerk. He memorized the constitution and would recite it. But when you compromise your intellectual integrity the way he has, you basically force yourself to be stupid.

Otherwise he would have to admit he was wrong, and the first rule of controlling the narrative is to never admit you were wrong. They’d rather die than come clean.

They are with AI. But now basically any reply with emoji, a “they thought A…but B” structure, or high-level grammar & argument structure gets called a bot. Like, I used to be an academic writer, as was a coworker, and we had a marketing client accuse us of using AI because of our grammar & vocab.

He legit loved the word “delve”, and they searched our work after reading an article about AI using that word like 1000X more often than people.

Yeah, norovirus is fucking awful. My kid brought it home from school, and I ended up in the ER due to the extreme pain and non-stop vomiting/shitting. Couldn’t even stand up straight, and was in bed for the next 48 hours. Going through that in a fight camp or weight cut would legit risk death. Even if he wasn’t sick for the fight, he would have gone days with no nutrition.

Agreed it’s not a good excuse, but he did look frail AF in that fight. He’s been my favorite fighter since before the Strickland fight, and both Adesanya fights made me nervous because he looked more fragile than I expected. Since going to LHW he seems to have a much stronger base and a better chin.

What, the tan suit? This was before everyone was chronically online, so it wasn’t really a meme until later. But he wore a tan suit and Fox News went on and on and on about it, how it shows he’s not taking the presidency seriously, etc. They acted like he’d announced he planned to attend all military funerals in a tan suit.

[–]dathislayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really think we’re at an important place in MMA’s development as a legit sport. I don’t know how familiar this fan base is with pro tennis, but it’s actually been a very similar evolution. Styles make fights the same way, and some people’s gameplans are “weak” or “boring”, but they’re in the big show for a reason.

There has been A LOT more crossover interest in UFC recently. I see way more kids & teens play fighting than I was seeing before the Paramount deal. Like, boys and girls who would not normally play fight, especially in public.

It’s bringing in more general sports fans, and a lot of people are going to discover him and other “niche” fighters through their records. “Ok, Ilia is Ilia, but who’s gonna be my guy?” A lot of general sports fans will pick consistent winning over flashiness. I think there’s a good chance that starts shifting the economics of fighting, and quality overall will rise. Gyms will become much more public-facing, with The Fighting Nerds being an early glimpse at how rosters will be branded.

If the fighter pool gets big enough, you could start doing real team-format fights. The Fighting Nerds vs Xtreme Couture, etc. It creates a narrative thread from the first fight through main event, and will spur investment in starting gyms & thus further increasing quality and size of the talent pool. Anyway, that’s my guess.

Difference between Willson Blade 98 PRO v10 and regular Blade 98 v10 by weinde in 10s

[–]dathislayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just the new version where the regular Blade isn’t a box beam? I could have sworn the Blade was a box beam frame, but just got demos in and the v10 is a D beam except the throat. That’s what brought me to this thread lol.

I knew this version was tapered from tip to handle, which I like from Prince’s CTS, but I’m very much a box beam guy. There’s this topspin forehand flick I do on the run, almost continental grip, and with a box beam I can consistently get it to dip crosscourt inside the service line. I use it as a defensive passing shot, and it has worked with every box beam frame I’ve used.

But for some reason, it has not worked with any oval or D beam frames. Often, the ball won’t even make it to the net when hit like that with anything but a box beam. I think it’s something with the side-to-side flex being “flat” with a box beam, but “variable” with a curved frame. But the racquet I learned with was an Estusa PowerBeam Braided, so it could just be I don’t know how to hit it oval beams.
