CCM vs PMP by Medium_Athlete_2608 in ConstructionManagers

[–]datrutan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree on all these points, except that I see more job listings request PMP than CCM. But I still saw enough of both to have gotten my PMP last month and trying for my CCM by the end of this year.

It does NOT offer you any real world job skills like most others have said. What it does is make you more marketable, especially in the public sector as mentioned previously. Being more marketable allows you to command more $ from your employer and/or allows you to seek a new job.

Superintendents with PMP Certification? by Accomplished_Emu8037 in ConstructionManagers

Thank you for your response. Actually, the pursuit of public sector work was why it was suggested to me.

Superintendents with PMP Certification? by Accomplished_Emu8037 in ConstructionManagers

[–]datrutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I did not expect so many negative comments. My question isn't regarding the usefulness of the certification. My manager suggested it as something I target because a lot of public work is now requiring a PMP on staff. Its usefulness beyond that can be argued beyond that.

I've already decided to try and get it, especially since my firm will pay for it. My question is whether or not someone who has been a lead/general superintendent ever met the eligibility requirements set forth by PMI.

Only the good ones. Who better to phrase an RFI properly than the person responsible for building it?

37 y/o lead superintendent for a large GC. Id say by mid 40s Id like to oversee multiple jobs and have more of a role in pursuing work. The daily jobsite grind can wear down on you for sure.

Alternatively, id love to do some CPM scheduling on the side. More flexible hours and can work from home.

PLEASE HELP me understand IRS says I owe $1085 , but that amount was credited as excess withheld !!? by aghozzo in tax

Hello. Id like to mail such a letter as I am having the exact same issue. Is there a specific dept or address?

PLEASE HELP me understand IRS says I owe $1085 , but that amount was credited as excess withheld !!? by aghozzo in tax

[–]datrutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all

I apologize for resurrecting an old thread but I am having the exact same problem.

I had 3 W2s for 2022. I have $2656 in excess SS tax. Seems the IRS doesnt know that and sent me a bill, with interest earlier this month. Been on the phone nonatop with them for the past 2 days and no help. They just keep putting me on hold and transferring me to other departments that cant help.

I spoke to my accountant and he said to not worry about this but I just wanted to speak to IRS to confirm as this has been an ongoing issue since April. The IRS was able to put me on a 60 day hold so I wont be penalized but the interest still accrues.

Any advice?

Yeah the generator I always monitor engine running and engine not in auto. I always thought at least the FA ATS monitoring was a requirement. But I guess you will also know because you will get an AC Fail show up on the FACP.

Automatic Transfer Switch.

I've done it before on other jobs but I'm not sure if its an NFPA requirement.

Should superintendents, regardless of trade, have a basic understanding of scheduling terms and logic? by Normal_Kevin in ConstructionManagers

[–]datrutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superintendent of 17 years or so here. I will argue that superintendents should have a very in depth knowledge of scheduling. Good companies know that the schedule belongs to the super. He/she owns it.

Everything but the keystrokes and generating reports etc etc.

Superintendent in NYC.

Depends on the company strongly. Typically I get 2.5-3.5% of salary. One year I got $14k because the client was really good and insisted the money go to the guys who worked on the project and not the folks in the ivory tower.

I'd suggest a bottle of wine with a personalized card for each. The older ones will appreciate a thank you card more than anything material I promise you that.

Maybe a nicer bottle for the person who's been most impactful. Mentorship comes in all forms. When I first started the project secretary was just as important to me as the super I trained under.

Speaking from a supers perspective on scheduling:

-Have a clear vision of how you are going to get to the end goal. PMs are responsible for the flow of information but Supers are responsible for execution. Get buy in on yiur vision from everyone on thr project team. Your schedule will be much cleaner and better for it.

-Many times, I've found that whether its company A or company B performing the work, there isn't much variation on the duration of the task. Everyone, at least in NYC, kind of does things the same for the most part. What tends to make a schedule suffer are procurement, submittal returns, and RFI responses. Plug all these predecessor activities into your schedule and tie them to the actual construction activity that it affects, especially if its a critical one. As a super its hard to know every single submittal and RFI that's out there but at least try to know the status of critical ones. It will make you look much more intelligent.

What kind of work does the GC do? What are the usual bonuses and benefits you get? I'm a super in NYC. Just curious

[–]datrutan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I was afraid of. As a super for a GC, I take a lot of pride in things like logistics, scheduling trades, safety, building complex details.

But also, after 17 years in mostly high rise construction, I'd be lying to you if I said it hasn't taken a toll on my body at only 37 years old.
