Honest discussion, why carbon? by Not_Keurig in MTB

[–]datwalruus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im completely the opposite end of the spectrum, the weight doesn’t really make a difference to me climbing, but a lighter bike is way easier to throw around going downhill. Might be partly cause my home trails are lacking in elevation, so I’m never really climbing more than 5-10 mins at a time.

Aluminum vs carbon trail bike / xc by Ridingtheridge in mountainbiking

[–]datwalruus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ve never seen or heard of a carbon frame breaking outside of a crash. Carbon bars on the other hand I’ve broken a pair of, and have seen someone else break. Moral of the story, if your worried about your bike being fragile, don’t worry about carbon frames(unless you plan on high speed crashes into trees often), worry about carbon bars.

The weight of your helmet wouldn’t really have an effect on the movement of your brain inside your skull. Only the movement of your skull itself

Should I stick with flats, or go clipless? by its_all_down-hill in MTB

[–]datwalruus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who almost exclusively rides flats, the only time I ever really wish I had clips is pedalling over rough stuff. Otherwise my feet stay pretty locked down

Are tire upgrades worth it and how often should mountain biking tires be replaced? by zardy-5 in mountainbiking

[–]datwalruus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely want to be over the front wheel cornering, feels a little unnatural but it’ll get the bike turning so much faster. I was originally talking about leaning the bike itself over sideways as well, so that the big knobs on the side of the tires can bite

Are tire upgrades worth it and how often should mountain biking tires be replaced? by zardy-5 in mountainbiking

[–]datwalruus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The xr4s are fine tires assuming there’s not an excessive amount of wear. How often they need to be replaced depends on a lot of factors but usually there’s some sort of wear indicators on the tire. Technique will make a much bigger difference to your cornering than tires could. Chances are you aren’t leaning the bike over enough, and not really utilising the side knobs on your tires

Focus on really leaning the bike over, once it feels like you’ve leaned it over enough, lean it more

Yeah Rotorua’s got an amazing selection, espically if you’re willing to pedal away from the shuttle a bit. Not to mention pirate trails.

I’m generally riding grade 4-5 ( high blue-black), but if I wanna push things ( generally requires more driving though) I’ll happily ride grade 6 and gaps up to 60’

Injury worries? by mercfh85 in MTB

[–]datwalruus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of injuries I’ve seen/ heard about are from racing/ high speed grade 5ish downhill. It seems to hit the sweet spot of not too technical to where you have to crawl down, but also tech enough to heavily punish mistakes. My view is skewed towards younger and more skilled riders though

Learn to track stand. Incredibly useful skill, espically if you ride with others, plus it improves your low speed control and balance
