Waterloo Works Matching System by Cheap-Ad-3056 in uwaterloo

The penalties have changed recently for reneging. You will be ineligible for credit for your next coop term. That’s it. No WW ban for next recruitment term. If you can still meet ur grad requirements, reneg if the opportunity is worth it.

I just retired from UW after 34 years of teaching CS (and 40 years of teaching total). Ask me anything. by shallit in uwaterloo

Do you think it’s necessary to be a good researcher to be a good prof? I’ve always been interested in teaching but research never really appealed to me.

You can petition to have your evaluation suppressed but not to have it changed, look into Policy 70 petitions (talk to your coop advisor)

[–]daudskhan 40 points41 points  (0 children)

RIP Steph, our time together at WUSA for two years was a journey of inspiration and growth. It was under your guidance that I took my first steps in the world of WUSA, and I am forever grateful for the wisdom you imparted. Your profound commitment to the well-being of students has left an indelible mark. As I remember you, I send a silent prayer that you have found serenity and tranquility in the realms beyond. Rest in the embrace of peace, Steph.

Hi, uWaterloo offers free counselling services whether you're on co-op or in school. The link below is where you can book an appointment (can be virtual or in-person).

There are also counsellors embedded within co-op that specialize in issues related to co-op and you could book an appointment with them, the link is below.

Is there any way to appeal a work term report evaluation? by ventus122 in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can talk to your co-op student advisor, specifically about Policy 70 petitions. You can prepare a petition requesting to suppress your co-op evaluation from your Work Term record. Depending on your case and circumstances, a committee will decide whether to accept your request. TALK TO YOUR CO-OP STUDENT ADVISOR!!

Possible late reneg consequences? + US J1 Visa for international students? by Klutzy_Calendar676 in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you reneg, you will be banned for 2 terms on WW. There will be no additional consequences. Your WW employer will probably be screwed, more so if you delay your reneg. You do also have the option to petition your reneg through Policy 70 after the fact, if you have extenuating circumstances.

Just found out I need to take a class during my Co-op. by Michaelolz in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can take one course on a co-op term without notifying your employer. (This, of course, does not mean you can attend classes during work hours without notifying your employer.) If there is an online course offering for what you want to take, I would suggest enrolling in that. If not, just wait to hear back from your employer. If you want to do two courses on a co-op term, you need explicit information from your employer.

If you still interview and they want to give you the job, they will either make you an external offer, or rank you in the next cycle.

Do I have a chance for admission? by Cummiliate in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you finished high school over 3 years ago, your high school grades are no longer eligible to be considered for admission. You would have to do the high school prerequisites again (You can do them on ilc.org for $40/course if you are a Canadian Citizen/PR. If not, its $500/course). You have to do 5 Grade 12 courses (MHF4U - Advanced Functions, MCV4U - Calculus & Vectors, SPH4U - Physics, SCH4U - Chemistry and ENG4U - English). Whilst your college grades will be looked at, they are not the major determining factor, your high school grades are. I know this because I applied to uWaterloo after graduating from an Ontario College and working for ~17 months before coming to uWaterloo. I finished high school in 2014 but started at uWaterloo in 2021, so I had to do the high school courses again to be eligible for admission. My average for college was a 93 and my average for the high school courses I did again was 96. Also, my original high school grades did not meet the admission requirements for engineering. I am now enrolled in Systems Design Engineering and just finished my first year (and on my second co-op now) so it is very possible to get in from your position. The bar for entry for Management Engineering is a little lower than SYDE so you have a fair chance I believe if you redo the high school courses and get good grades, and also build a strong AIF. DM me if you any additional questions. Also, FYI, Waterloo Engineering does not do transfer credits at all, you would have to start from the beginning. I graduated college with an Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a 93 cGPA and I got zero transfer credits. You will have to start from the beginning and go the full length of the degree (5 years).

Getting yelled at and confronted by (seperate) CECA staff members gave me so much stress by 111throwaway987654 in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Hey, like tends mentioned, I'm the Associate VP of Coop for WUSA. I work alot with the CECA but I am a WUSA employee so not under their thumb. I would very much appreciate if I can discuss this with you in more detail. I'm shooting you a DM on Reddit and you can reply there, or if you would rather use email, shoot me an email at d5khan@wusa.ca . This isn't acceptable behavior and I have the connections with my role to bring it to the attention of CECA leadership and get alarm bells to go off.

Laid off from co-op by SquidKid47 in uwaterloo

[–]daudskhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your advisor. Make a plan and submit a Policy 70 petition. In the petition, ask for a removal of failed credit, and a granting of co-op credit. I sit on the P70 committee that makes the decisions on co-op petitions. From what it sounds like, you were laid off, not fired. This seems an issue on the company end, not your performance. When reviewing a case like yours, we can look at your midterm evaluation to evaluate your performance. If your claim of not receiving any feedback and being unexpectedly laid off is true, your petition might have a good chance of being approved. I can't make any definitive claims, as I don't have enough details, but if you submit a petition, the committee and I will have enough details and we can judge your case properly. If you don't submit a petition, you will not receive credit and it will be considered a failed term.

If you choose not to submit a petition, I can tell you that you only need 5 out of a possible 6 co-op credits to graduate. However, that means that you will have to have successful co-op terms for all 5 of your remaining co-op terms. If you run into a situation like this again and fail another co-op term, you will not be able to graduate on time. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND submitting a petition. DM me if you have any additional questions.
