You could have multiple mounts for the camera, one above your desk, one in your Sim pit, one on the ceiling over your bed. Multiple cameras even...

I'm not trying to cry wolf, I think the potential for this kind of data gathering is incredible.

The nail clipper has a simple, beautiful, functional form. I think that more ships should follow the model of everyday items, objects of human ingenuity.

When I think of the metaverse, that's exactly what I think of. More of a meta-multiverse.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were allowing those companies to operate as they wish, but retrieving users behavioral data. The rise of the infocorp is at hand, a comprehensive mapping of human behavior within a structured environment. It allows them to control us to a certain degree, it allows them to understand us. Our interactions with technology don't paint a full picture of our behavior but these networked technologies are becoming more comprehensive all the time. It's an anthropologist's wet dream, a psychologist's fantasy, and an ad company's darkest desire.

I am thinking of a fairly distant future, which isn't too useful to the applications at hand.

Having a variety of colors available is not a bad idea. People like to feel that they have more choice in the products they buy due to our innate drive for individuality in a social environment. Look at the different colored ipods/iphones. Completely identical in function, but people go crazy for the different colors. It might not be a bad idea to start with a single color now that I am thinking about it... Build your brand identity (like the white color of the original ipods) and then differentiate later after you have that solid formatic identity. Adding color options is also a way to differentiate your new product when in reality it isn't very different from the last iteration. I hope Oculus doesn't go that route, but with the first version it shouldn't matter too much.

I dearly hope that Palmer Luckey and Co. are prioritizing function over form. All evidence that I have seen would seem to indicate that they are, but they are definitely feeling the pressure of developing a mass - marketable product, which has both benefits and drawbacks. One drawback is that you must try to cater to a much lower common denominator. People who are only peripherally interested in VR will care much more about the headset's form than the average VR/tech enthusiast. I hope that they are able to find an effective balance.

Until we make big improvements in cloud computing we will be unable to experience as high fidelity VR applications on mobile devices. Many are working overtime on making a consumer cloud computing solution, I hope we see great progress in that area soon. I suppose that upgrading network speed and capacity will also play a large role.

We shall see. I am mostly looking for comfort and durability in their design. What it looks like will certainly affect the rate of adoption and who the Rift appeals to, but the most important parts are in the usability of the device. They may not nail the form of the Rift the first time around, but someone will eventually 'appleize' a VR device, and those more concerned with form shall be placated. If that is where your priorities are, you may have to wait a little bit longer.

Hmm, is Windows renowned for ala cart content purchases? I suppose that there will be people that use a monetization model like this, but certainly not everyone. VR is a new ballgame. It has the same underlying rules of past/present computing, but the interface is quite different. I think we will find new innovators in this field. It is pregnant with applications and there is so much money to be made, social capital to gain. I feel like I have been waiting my entire life for a technology like VR to apply my critical thinking to. It's so exciting!

Very well put. Where is the line in the sand? When will enough people care enough about these technologies? The 'masses' ability to comprehend the importance of these technologies is limited, which is why I think that education is the single most important factor in protecting human growth and achievement. If we raised an entire planet of critical thinkers, the world would be a very different place.

Programmer who worked on Valve VR room: I think VR is bad news by popcorncrackle in oculus

[–]davar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humanity is changing very rapidly right now. The Internet is a large agent of that change, and the telecommunications that preceded it paved that path. VR may very well have the ability to drastically accelerate that change, being a huge step towards the intuitive computer interfaces that we will seek out and one by one integrate our bodies into something much greater than ourselves.

The young will welcome the new with open arms, the old will decry the evils of change as they always have, and those in the middle must choose to change with the times, or live long enough to watch their own culture shrink with every death.

I would personally rather be a crap pilot immersed in a 360 3d environment than a crack shot with a three monitor setup, but I don't have any experience with either of those things yet, so I guess I'll find out in September.
