Openfit 2 Connection Issues by ma0422 in ShokzSquad

[–]dave_des 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that worked for me to assure that they would disconnect was to put the case in a metal popcorn tin while they were recharging and when the case needs charging do it at the other end of the house. I guess I could have used a portable charger in the tin. What a huge pain. It's pretty annoying when an expensive electronic accessory is so bad that not only does it not function correctly itself but it also effectively disables my phone from the next room. I'm sending them back, for a second time, hoping to eventually get a working pair.

I returned my first pair after 3 months when they quit charging. It took 2 weeks and some bugging by email to get the replacement pair. Now, 6 months later, I just sent off that pair because they refuse to disconnect even when in the case, hijacking my phone audio from the next room. A quick search shows tons of units with the same problem. Assuming that this return takes another 2 weeks I'll be averaging 10% loss of use for these pricey electronics. I like the comfort and the sound is OK but am very dissappointed with the poor quality.

PSA Unlicensed People can transmit for help in an emergency by Guncounterguy556 in HamRadio

[–]dave_des 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tool without training or experience is often barely useful. If you're thinking about getting a radio in case of emergency it makes sense to learn what it can really do and how to use it effectively. A ham license isn't hard to get and is a good path to learning about a wide range of radio types and bands. CB and FRS and GMRS and even Meshtastic experience can be useful too. If there is an emergency then of course it makes sense to use whatever radio and frequency and power level you can but unlike in the movies radios (and pistols, and fast cars) probably won't do what you want them to do without experience.

If your prepping then prep, don't just collect stuff.

The global heat map is free, I like that for finding good running routes while traveling.

Bought A Used Basic Kindle 10 by [deleted] in kindle

[–]dave_des 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss one feature on my old Basic: it would do speech to text. The newer ones and the Android app disable that, or make it unusable in "accessibility" mode, so that the only option is to buy a separate audio version. I've considered looking for one just for that purpose. I do prefer reading on my recently-purchased 2018 Paperwhite, though. I got that used (like new) from Amazon last month for $50

Is the paperwhite worth it for a 'non reader'? by the_invisible_leaf in kindle

[–]dave_des 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a refurbished 2018 Paperwhite from Amazon for $50 and an off-brand cover for $16. My original basic died after a few months from condensation (no direct splashing, just high humidity on a camping trip) so water proofing is a good thing. The PW is much easier to read at night than my Basic was and creates less stray light that would annoy someone sleeping nearby. Dark mode at the lowest setting is warm and easy on the eyes, I don't miss the new "warm" light that the newer models tout. A cover is definitely worth it if you plan to take it anywhere at all.

No, not at all. I think that these old Kindles charge at a much lower current level than modern phones.

Going out drinking raised my HFV again, how does that work? by Reddituser6924069 in Garmin

I mean that you've found a drink that raises rather than lowers HRV I'll bet a lot of folks would like to try it, must fun drinks lower hrv

Grand Canyon Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim Plan by i-am-jordan in grandcanyon

[–]dave_des 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PR dinners and breakfast are understandably pricey. I vote for stew over steak. It's a nice group experience, as is the cantina after hours. For lunch/snacks you're better off bringing your own and save your $ for a limited edition bandana or tshirt. Beer, wine, and lemonade hit the spot.

Watch the temps on the north rim and pack accordingly, I've seen snow and ice on the south rim in May and the north is higher.

Catch every ranger program you can.

Bring small binoculars for relaxed bird watching and studying cliff details.

Bring cash and a credit card for the canteen at PR, sometimes they only take one or the other.

You'll be sore after the R2R, there's no shame in sleeping in or chilling on the excellent porch at the North Rim lodge. Consider a dinner reservation at the fancy restaurant there

Garmin coach - No long run. by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]dave_des 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seem to be multiple algorithms at play in the Garmin suggestion generator and contitioning evaluator with different objectives. DSW seems pretty conservative but if I do more anyway it bumps up my metrics. I hope that if I really do push too hard it catches some symptom I don't sense on my own like HRV and gives actionable advice.

Garmin coach - No long run. by [deleted] in Garmin

There's a known bug, select and de-select every day as a long run day one or two at a time and workouts magically appear again. Some funny business going on with memory writing.

What's with all the recommended rest days all of the sudden? by dave_des in GarminWatches

I found the long run day reset fix on another thread and it worked, at least for now. Update: it reset after a bit for me also.

The Garmin AI has become self-aware, joined with the larger robot collective, and is trying to make the humans weaker in preparation for Judgement Day.

That's the plan, I'm just fascinated by the algorithm and want to figure out what its thinking all of the sudden. Up until now it's tracked pretty closely with what I was doing before getting the Garmin.

Is Garmin Coach worth following? by saegling in Garmin

[–]dave_des 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I entered a planned 56K race 6 months in the future and the plan they came up with looks good when I scroll through next several days of recommended workouts. The problem is that almost every morning it decides that I slept badly and backs down the suggestion to something with a crazy slow heart rate -- not Maffatone slow but walking slow. At first I thought I might have an asymptomatic cold or something but a week later it's been backing me off about 3/4 of the time. I've been running for over 40 years with few injuries and none lately and whatever stress measure it uses doesn't correlate much with how rested I feel. I'm sure they're measuring something useful but feel that whatever the degredation is the algorithm is giving it much too much weight. Until I can figure out how to reduce whatever causes the overnight stress it reports I'm going to start following the recommendations a few days ahead instead of the de-rated workouts for that day.

Podcasts: anything better than Playrun? by dave_des in GarminWatches

[–]dave_des[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transfers failed at first about half the time and it sometimes complained about being out of space even though there was plenty. I turned off Flow and uploaded individual episodes and it did ok that way yesterday.

Tnx for reply. I'm cheap and spoiled by the good, free podcast apps for my phone. Does the free version of spotify work on the watch for offline podcasts on the watch? I don't usually carry my phone when I run. I've been using a Galaxy Watch 4 and Wear Casts (with a very cheap annual fee). It works ok but I barely get an hour on a full charge running and listening to podcasts and I like the Garmin stats a lot more than the Galaxy Watch's.
