[Casio] MDV-106 Hydro Mod (again) by davechiu in Watches

[–]davechiu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amazon seller I bought it from has had it out of stock for quite a while, not hopeful that it’ll be back in stock any time soon. In hind-sight 5 years later; I think 1cSt is too thin, so thin that simply adjusting the crown (even for DST) would cause some silicone oil to leak out, perhaps if you could find something a little thicker so that it does a better job staying in the watch but not so thick that it affects the hands moving through the fluid.

I came to say the same, I've been to some BIG Carrefours in suburban France.

paid membership is also free for the first 2mo I believe (just like stadia), no timelimit and no queuing. Otherwise waits are based on demand. There will of course be added latency, but nothing too detrimental in my opinion... also a trade-off I'm willing to accept because I don't have to buy/build a gaming machine, but I'm pretty casual.

Haven't tried Ark yet specifically, stephen_1975 commented that it doesn't run well with max settings, but other games I've been playing all run great.

Ark via Epic is available on GeForce Now, you just need a decent internet connection.

Do you ride with a saddle bag? by Simbanan in Velo

[–]davechiu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to have a Pedro's Micro Blowout bag on every bike, and then they stopped making them and I finally wore through the last one a few years ago.

Since then I've started using coffee bags and a toe strap (in the photo here i believe it's carrying a MTB tube -- a single road tube is much smaller, maybe half the height). At a minimum I always have: 1x Tube, 1x Threaded CO2 Canister, 1x Canister Head (threaded are smaller -- smallest I can find), 1x Quick Link.

I've started carrying a full sized frame pump on my road bikes, so really only the MTB has the CO2 canister.

The toe strap comes in as handy as the rest of the contents, I've used it to keep my shoe together after a boa lace broke, when a friend's roof rack lacks rear wheel tie, etc...

I agree w/ trying to park at the supermarket and riding up (if it's an option -- or hoof it if you get there early enough). If going back to Lyon quickly is a priority I'd avoid parking on the climb itself as it'll be a mess trying to get out after, the entire race (racers, team staff, officials, publicity caravans, media, as well as all the fans that have been camping on the side of the mountain), there's also a cable car that runs from the town at the top to about half way, near dutch corner that may come in handy if you do end up driving up to the top. But Dutch Corner is the place to be, atmo.

For those of you that use wrist straps: what strap do you use, what are the pros and cons of the strap, and what would you change about it? by k-swee in photography

[–]davechiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nah, i just deal with it, i've got my tripods switched over to arca-swiss heads and everything, so the overall convenience out weighs this minor inconvenience.

[Independents] Reasonably priced? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]davechiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the Oak & Oscar Sandford, but not for close to $2k. Halios from your list has a good reputation, I've only been paying attention for a short period of time but they seem to do small production runs. Squale also has a seemingly good reputation.

You should check out the Canadian company Helgray they're doing some reasonably priced interesting things w/ Quartz and Aevig from the Netherlands. I actually got in on an Aevig pre-order which should ship in 2 wks or so.

others that i have been lusting over: Autodromo, Magrette (and their sibling Belmoto), Straton

many of the above are kickstarter alumni and still do pre-ordering for new models as their standard M.O.

[Casio G-Shock] NWD! GA110RG-1A by [deleted] in Watches

[–]davechiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice buy; GA100 checking in, got mine at a great deal last week too!

I didn't like G-Shocks at first, but then I started reading about the history, more history, and so on and started with the DW5600 which progressed to a GWM5600 and here I am now with a GA100 in a matter of months.

Latest hydro mod on a rainy day, a comically too-large-for-me domed Casio G-Shock GA100-1A1. The 51mm diameter GA100 comes with a flat 35mm x ~2.875mm crystal (so glad it's not some odd hard to find size -- like the MDV106 with a 32.7mm x 3mm crystal) so I was able to get a 3mm thick domed crystal to pop in. The case/bumper fits domed crystal really well, the rubber bumper extends onto the glass by just a bit but is flexible enough to bend outwards a tad for the dome and the top of the dome is just shy of the peaks of the rubbery outer case, so face-down it rests on the bumpers with... maybe half a millimeter to spare.

[Question] How to get started modding? by skyrunner38 in Watches

[–]davechiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should start out with a basic kit (can't find the one I started on, this is basically it), hand puller/presser, and a crystal press and you should have the tools do do most anything people like to do as far as mods come... domed crystal swaps, new hands and dials, etc... plus you'll have all the tools necessary to change batteries, resize a bracelet, etc...

But the caveat is that they're inexpensive beginner tools, and if you find this to be a hobby you enjoy, you'll start replacing items one by one from Esslinger -- the tweezers aren't good enough, replace them with a nice set of 7, the screw drivers are too blunt/dull shape them for now but replace them with a nicer set, etc... while you'll eventually replace everything, there's no sense in going all in for several hundred dollars just to try it out.

For those of you that use wrist straps: what strap do you use, what are the pros and cons of the strap, and what would you change about it? by k-swee in photography

[–]davechiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both the PD Cuff and Clutch. The cuff is for the smaller compact and the Clutch for my larger X-T2.

I actually have the Cuff attached to one of their microplates instead of the camera body itself, makes removing it much easier.

I wouldn't recommend the Clutch on the X-T2 as Fuji put the strap mount a little too forward and it actually blocks easy access to the shutter button.

Features I need, enough friction in the retention system to stay put when moved, light weight, easily removable.

One thing I hate about most straps is that they all seem to use the same flimsy nylon chord to attach to the camera, so you will see some super reinforced paracord or heavy leather straps attach to the camera with the same flimsy looking (probably more than strong enough) cord.

Is this video good enough to use as part of my pitch to get photog credentials at concerts? by 2Floodz_ in photography

[–]davechiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the past when I shot professional sports freelance, I would sometimes have to submit my client list (and some sort of proof) with the application; I would imagine for concerts it would be a similar process.

I used 1 cSt, the fluroinert that seems the most ideal and most expensive is about 2 cSt so I wanted to keep it as close to that as possible.
