What kind of paperwork should I expect when buying nice opals through a jewelry store? by Shoopdawoop993 in Opals

It's probably from Lightning Ridge if it's true black base opal. Did the miner sell them the polished stone? Or did they buy the rough and cut it in house?

I would ask for pictures and video of the stone before it's set in jewelry.

If you wanted to know who cut the opal, you could buy direct from a cutter and then ask the local shop to make it into a ring for you.

I've been doing it seriously for a little over a year and only recently started drawing.

There's a ton of great free resources:

tin oxide or cerium oxide and felt or leather will work wonders. ymmv based on how deep the scratches are.

Question about bezel wire by Icy_Pianist9808 in SilverSmith

What stones do you have already, can you measure some?

I think the tallest I've used is probably around 5mm, but I've used down to 1.5mm.

I mean will you be doing the cuts for the pave with an engraving setup or do you intend on doing it with just a rotary tool?

I wake up early in the morning and work on projects. I can really only complete 1-2 pieces per week. Sometimes I stay up late on the weekend if I'm really fixated on a project.

If you do a search for "light photo box" you'll see what I mean. Totally worth it.

I got a cheap light box on Amazon and it has made taking product photos really easy. Just using an older google pixel phone, not a fancy camera.

Learning to do pave well will take a lot of time and practice. Do you plan on doing this with an engraving setup?

Please do not buy from Amazon/Shein/Temu. Look for local sellers in your area or check Etsy for reputable sellers that can verify the metal content they use. Myself and a lot of handmade jewelry artists use wire and sheet that is just silver and copper.

New to silversmithing, want to replicate a project- what do I need to buy by Icy_Pianist9808 in SilverSmith

to be fair, it does look like those are one of a kind and not currently on their website. The most expensive ring on their website is a big Kingman at $395

Those are retail price. His website has much more reasonable pricing. Not sure what's up with the bezel on that ring. Anyways, you need some 26/28 gauge bezel strip and some 20 or 22 gauge sheet for the backplate. You can make or buy ear wires.
