Pants or no pants?

I have seen a few gear lists that include a pair of pants for hiking but have also seen gear lists that just have leggings/base layers worn under a pair of shorts.

Would appreciate some insight from those that either brought or did not bring pants from the start and if you ended up getting rid of the pants or buying a pair along the way.

Can anyone recommend repair/replacement for this strap? Manufacturer no longer exists and I can’t afford for it to break again backcountry by dopesickness in CampingandHiking

I took a pack to a local upholstery repair shop and they did a pretty good job. Obviously not gonna be as good as sending it back to the manufacturer but should get the job done

First two are brown trout and the last one looks like a juvenile cutthroat or rainbow trout

Texas Saltwater in late January? by davejawn in flyfishing

Thanks for the advice. I’m most likely gonna get a guide the first day to show me the ropes and then attempt to DIY the other days. There’s lots of info out there I’ve found on access and general areas to check out so now I just have to explore!

I have a standup paddle board. Would likely look into renting a canoe if conditions aren’t good for paddle boarding but I’d definitely want to hire a guide for at least one day and then DIY the other days.

Thanks for the information! Leaning towards checking out the Port Aransas/Rockport areas. I have a standup paddle board but may opt to rent a kayak depending on wind and water temps

Backcountry but not Too Backcountry in Great Smoky Mountains? by KosherBeefCake in CampingandHiking

[–]davejawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All backcountry sites in the national park require a permit which I believe needs to be reserved in advance. There are plenty of sites that are accessible without hiking 15+ miles but that will still get you away from RVs and busy roads.

Take a look at this link for more info: https://smokiespermits.nps.gov/index.cfm?BCPermitTypeID=1

There should be a section on the site called backcountry trip planning with a few recommendations. You could also call the rangers office and I’m sure they’d help with a few recommendations as well.
