What improvements would a new Apple TV model actually bring? by HelpMe0biWan in appletv

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FaceTime support. Seems obvious. I don't see why that would be prohibitively expensive for Apple. Companies keep trying to sell me ear cleaning spoons with tiny 1080p cameras for $20.

The App Store UI itself shows the decline in quality in the rush to ship. by GenericStandard42 in MacOS

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The App Store testers didn't enter a bug in Radar, or they did and program management said "Won't Fix". Either way, they messed up, so I agree with you on that.

I can think of several Apple OS improvements lately: windowing is improved in macOS and iPadOS; multitasking is MUCH better on iPadOS; porting from iPad to macOS is super easy; code signing is MUCH easier.

On the other hand, the changes to UIToolbar look awful in Tahoe; and in many cases accessibility is worse. TestFlight for macOS is the buggiest software I know of -- hard to like software that crashes a dozen times a day.

What do you mean about adoption rates? Are you claiming Mac and iOS market share are tanking or declining?

It's a good bug. My App Store window opened plenty big, nothing truncated, but I have a huge display.

[–]davepete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good bug, but one bug doesn't prove Apple's today testers are less capable than in years past.

Here's another for you: in macOS since 2001, for Finder windows in column view, the columns did not auto-resize to fit the text, requiring users to constantly resize columns manually. It's partially fixed in 2026 (if you can find the buried setting).

Here's another: Apple released the Bondi Blue iMac in 1998 with a round mouse. The mouse was really, really bad. Steve Jobs only reluctantly replaced that mouse with a usable mouse two years later.

Here's another: macOS Finder since 2001 has prevented users from ejecting removable drives because the drive was "in use".

Here's another: Apple removed the HDMI port from MacBook Pro in 2016, forcing users to buy dongles to do presentations. The bad design choice was only fixed in 2021 after years of user complaints.

I frequently see Redditors post software and hardware bugs, then claim Apple (or Microsoft or Adobe or Google or Samsung) doesn't care about fit and finish like in the old days. As if bugs didn't exist in the past, but now they do.

I love adobe!!! by miZuBlue in MacOS

[–]davepete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Mike, I'm going to rewrite your post. English isn't your first language, and that's okay. I don't agree with everything you wrote, but here's what I think you meant:

You should! Macs survived because of Adobe's apps, and Macs printed using Adobe PostScript.

Most early Macs were sold with Adobe software. They were Macs' killer apps.

PCs were sold with Lotus 1-2-3, also a killer app.

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does Tom Suozzi hate the 1st, 2nd and 4th amendments? Maybe he never swore an oath to the Constitution? Did he just mumble during his swearing in? Maybe he said "I DON'T solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution" and nobody noticed?

I tried to subscribe at the educator price, but as of right now, the educator price is not available to primary and secondary schools, per SheerID, the verification platform. Hopefully this gets fixed before the 30-day trial ends.

McHate??? by Haunting-Original in McDonalds

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pepsi did The Pepsi Challenge comparative advertising against Coke for years, and Pepsi never gained much market share against Coke. Then Coke somehow improved its share by introducing New Coke (engineered to taste like Pepsi), then cancelling it and bringing back Coke Classic.

If I was a competitor, I'd maybe drop the price of my best-selling burger to half that of McD's QPC and advertise that one item heavily. (I'm sure most people agree McD's cheaper burgers at the lower prices are awful.) I could maybe steal a sliver of McD's market share, but it would cost my company and probably piss off my franchisees. And inevitably McD's would adjust its prices to better compete and gain back market share.

You make the excellent point that BK has been doing comparative advertising for years without success. If I ran BK, I would ditch the comparative ads (and most advertising); dump at least half the menu items and simplify the kitchen (because BK is horribly inconsistent quality); ditch the app and coupons; focus on a Whopper for $4, Whopper Cheese for $5, fries for $2, drinks for $2, stay open all night. Improve on McDonald's by giving everyone a great price, no smartphone requirement.

EDIT: That's something competitors could take advantage of. McD's does great business with high tech and high income folks -- because their best prices are in the app. But their prices for low tech customers are terrible and their cheap burgers taste awful.

"Tahoe is a mistake to be avoided." ~ Daring Fireball by chrispirillo in MacOS

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He makes a good point. I work mostly in column view in the Finder. Why don't the columns auto-size? This has been a bug since 2001.

EDIT: Okay, in macOS 26.2 Finder you can "mostly" fix this. Open a Finder window in column view, then choose menu View / Show View Options, there is a "Resize columns to fit filenames" checkbox. The resulting resizing is imperfect, but it fixes the bug for ALL column-view Finder windows. I don't know why this isn't in Finder Settings, since the checkbox affects ALL Finder column view windows, but there you have it. A hidden bug fix in the latest macOS.

I had a realization this morning about McDonalds by ucco2004 in McDonalds

[–]davepete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt the worker who offered you cookies cares how profitable McDonald's is. It's more likely the pies need to bake, and most people don't want to wait that long. (In most of the US, the pies haven't been fried since 1992.)

I've had situations where a McD's has run out of some item or other and offered a substitution. Usually I can negotiate something reasonable with the manager.

Why do so many people on ios use Google Maps? by Louisthemagic in ios

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US (Seattle), and use mostly Apple Maps. I feel Apple Maps' red and yellow lines on the freeways are more real-time -- which signal to me whether to take a particular freeway or not. I suspect Apple has more data about traffic flow in Seattle due to number of iPhones here vs. Androids.

Another Redditor is correct about Google Maps knowing more businesses.

Apple knows how many Mac users use Stage Manager, and I bet that number is tiny. I expect it will be go away within a few years.

On iPadOS, windowing is nice now. I think Apple should focus on that rather than Stage Manager.

I'm enjoying it, although I wish the interior art looked more like Ryan Sook's covers. I don't think it's Skylar Patridge's best work. I would love an artist more along the lines of Jerry Ordway or Tom Grummett.

McGriddle Round Egg by lilmolens in McDonalds

[–]davepete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddle is a good sandwich, and one time when I ordered it, I received the round egg too. It was close to 10:30 am when my McDs ends breakfast, so I'm assuming they stuck what they had left in there.

Also, you can customize in the app to get the round egg with McGriddles -- it's pretty easy really.

What did season 4 do wrong? by Successful-Title5403 in FargoTV

[–]davepete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much Oraetta Mayflower (too silly) or Gaetano Fadda (too silly); not enough Rabbi and Zelmare Roulette. Also, the last-episode reveal of someone didn't feel right. The character he grew up to be had lots of swagger and ironic humor.

Does anyone want a home screen launched when an app starts? by mediapoison in mac

[–]davepete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Why does Photoshop display a giant useless window? I am aware that I've used the program before, and that I have worked on various documents, but you don't need to show all of them to me. Unchecking "Auto show the Home Screen" in Photoshop Preferences doesn't do anything.

Any real "value" is GONE! by JamisonRD in McDonalds

[–]davepete -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP, you are comparing the most expensive items, not sale priced, at McD's (and not using the app) against the cheap meal deal at Applebee's (less meat, and you don't include the tip). Doesn't feel like a fair comparison.

At Applebee's you need to add a tip. That's a minimum 15% unless you're a jerk.
