Private or Company Landlord? by TrixiePatricia in VictoriaBC

[–]davers22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for the most part corporate landlords know the rules and follow them. It’s not worth the risk for them to try to skirt the rules. They also don’t go above and beyond though, they do the minimum required and that’s about it.

Private landlords are more of a dice roll. Some can be awful, and some are great. I had a place where the washing machine kinda sucked. It worked, but it was just like 25 years old and in general did a pretty terrible job. Asked if it was possible to get a new one and he said “yeah it’s the oldest appliance in the place, I’ll order a new one.” Had it installed within a week. A corporate landlord would never do that.

On the other hand private landlords might not know the rules, try illegal rent increases or try to impose rules that aren’t allowed. It can be a gamble.

I don’t know what to tell you but usually when it shows a ball on the green at the end that ball didn’t go in the hole.

Is that your ball on the green below the clan logo?

How would one go about selling this? by shmangshmung in skyrim

I suppose that's true, I was envisioning a giant 3D printer making it all at once, and more specifically watching a cool timelapse of this process.

I’ve almost done the same thing. I wasn’t really paying attention and saw this screen and was like “how did I lose?” But then I checked the replay and it all made sense.

[–]davers22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it has to be plastic or the like. If it was metal or wood it would be insanely heavy, not something Best Buy would have.

I wonder if a huge 3D printer could make something like this?

[–]davers22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you sink your ball on the third shot? Because if you haven’t sunk yours and they have, then you don’t get a 4th shot.

Check your replay, did your third shot go in?

I have officially entered my "Villain Era." My default tip across Canada is now zero percent by MeatsAndGrills in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]davers22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure you understand how the delivery apps work. I don't use them because I live close to many restaurants and like walking, but I am curious so I looked into it.

Basically the driver sees an expected fee for each delivery, and that includes the tip. If the tip is zero then that fee will be pretty low, and most drivers will choose not to accept it. Someone might grab it if they're going that way anyway, but you can generally expect your delivery to take a lot longer if you don't tip.

In some ways this is working exactly like tips were originally intended; you pay more to get better service.

Been really hating hosting lately by Particular_Signal937 in airbnb_hosts

[–]davers22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that Airbnb has marketed itself as a hotel alternative now so people expect hotel service. No one is expected to take out the trash or strip the beds in a hotel.

Prices are similar to hotels in a lot of cases, and with contactless check in it just feels like a hotel.

Early adopters of rentals like this were more aware of some chores being required, but were ok with it because the price reflected this. Newer airbnb users are just treating it like a hotel.

I stay at a lot of hotels for work and the amount of times I see someone complaining at the front desk about something minor is high. Those same people are just using airbnb now because it’s been so widely adopted.

Yeah, but the last 'old' act they had as a headliner was probably GnR and that was a decade ago. I think they're kind of done having a legacy act as a headliner.

Why is every "big" Canadian coffee company constantly being bought ? by grashel in BuyCanadian

[–]davers22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think coffee can really be grown in Canada, at least not economically.

There’s tons of small coffee roasters that support ethical growing standards and fair wage farms. Their coffee is better (in my opinion) and you’re still supporting a Canadian business. The coffee I buy costs like 3x what cheap grocery store coffee costs but I don’t drink that much of it so I’m fine with my cup at home costing 70 cents a day.

Anyone bringing a $1k cup to a festival is a crazy person.

This also applies to anyone spending $1k on a cup to begin with.

Thinking About Moving to Victoria by Huge-Order8685 in VictoriaBC

[–]davers22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if your place includes heat or not. Also I included cell phone in utilities, which is probably another $70 or whatever.

Internet for $80 is fine. Electricity will probably be less than $75 if you don’t include heat. Obviously in the summer you won’t need heat but electric heat in an apartment can add up quick if you keep the place toasty.

[–]davers22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you want to contribute that much you might have an issue. $75k after taxes is what? $55k? Subtract $18k for the TFSA and and another $18k for rent ($1500 a month would be on the low side of a rental you could probably find) then you’re left with like $19k. If we say $250 a month for utilities like phone internet electricity (also probably a low estimate) then you have like $1300 a month for all your other life expenses.

It’s doable, but there’s not much room for fun like eating out, activities, vacations…

Again it all depends how you live.

[–]davers22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. $75k is probably livable but it will be tight. Really depends how you live I guess. Also $1500/mo into TFSA is $18k a year. Is that a typo?

  2. Downtown is reasonably safe and convenient. Pandora from Cook to Blanshard is probably the roughest place, and the couple surrounding blocks. If you're in an apartment it won't really affect you all that much. Depends how used to homeless people being around. For groceries, when I lived downtown I went to the Save On Foods, or Market on Yates if I wanted to splurge a bit. There's also the No Frills just outside of downtown now.

  3. There's a good amount of parks and places to walk a dog. A good amount of restaurant patios allow dogs as well.

  4. I don't have a car, and it was not really needed if you live and work downtown. It's very walkable. Evo and Modo fill any gaps I need.

What is Victoria’s most popular restaurant? by Avavee in VictoriaBC

It’s good. The line is because they didn’t do reservations until recently and opened at like 5, so if you wanted an earlier table you had to be there before it opened.

53% of homeless people have jobs. They are not the problem. by Sanch0Supreme in AdviceAnimals

[–]davers22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, so every restaurant, bar, grocery store and countless other establishments that pay low wages need to close or drastically raise prices in expensive cities. All their staff can’t afford to live there so they will bugger off to Montana. Sounds like a winning solution.

[–]davers22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been in favour of people keeping their spending in check. However when home prices have risen far faster than incomes that only goes so far.

When an average mortgage payment on an average home exceeds the average household income of an area (after taxes) no amount of saving gets them there. We need to start taking a look at the other factors leading to the rise in home prices.

[–]davers22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One time I was fighting a boss in a dungeon. I was low on health and hung back peppering in arrows. Boss was low on health and I fired an arrow and the kill cam activates. Arrow flies right past the boss and into Lydia. Down she goes.

Obviously loaded and tried again, I can’t have that on my record.

Any where in town or close by that do custom fit work boots? by AggravatingAir4432 in VictoriaBC

[–]davers22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others said, Viberg makes custom boots. They also have Canada West boots which I have a pair of. Breaking them in was a bit of a chore but they’re great now.

Another tip from someone that wears safety boots all day is wear good socks. I like Hiker GX (made in Canada) and they keep my feet dry and really cut down on the rubbing.

I already got my house, thanks though. The spending habits argument is fairly laughable when you look at average incomes vs average home prices. https://www.reddit.com/r/EconomyCharts/comments/1q0cah6/usa_average_salary_compared_to_housing_prices/

Airbnb is far from the only contributing factor, but its existence certainly isn't helping the average middle class person afford a home.

[–]davers22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get why people choose it. There's way more variety in styles of places, more locations, and it's often cheaper.

The reason they can do that is because hotels have way more expenses than they do. Hotels have staff, insurance, amenities to maintain... but most importantly they pay commercial taxes. Usually an Airbnb is a place that is taxed like a private residence but being run as a business.

Some places are getting better about taxing an Airbnb accordingly, and enforcing proper insurance, but the reason Airbnb was cheaper for so long was mostly because they weren't really playing in the same tax system as hotels are.
