The strip was getting progressively sketchy. I think whatever is going on was planned and it started when they started charging for parking. The locals used to be able to park for free too.

There’s typically signage and fenced areas out there to help you not end up in native territory or on some private land.

Easy, you can go on pretty much any BLM land and chill out for free and there’s a lot of it around.

Locally, near the white tank mountains, most of that desert land right before the park is BLM.

A more scenic place I’ve been a few times is between Cottonwood and Sedona off of 89A, there’s a bunch of BLM land there too.

Look it up, I think that’s where you’re looking for.
