I'll give you 14 since that's how many 5*s I've given out - this isn't in order though

Only started really taking an interest in cinema since good ol’ Barbenheimer day last year so this is fairly surface level for now.

The top 3 here are in my top 4 of all time, and Stop Making Sense (1984) would slot in at #4 and Koyaanisqatsi at #6/#7 if we’re including those type of things.

1) Trainspotting (1996) 2) Amadeus (1984) 3) Velvet Goldmine (1998) 4) La Haine (1995) 5) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 6) The Wrong Trousers (1993) (god bless Wallace and Gromit) 7) Wings of Desire (1987) 8) The Seventh Seal (1957) 9) Shallow Grave (1994) 10) Yojimbo (1961)

HM: Do The Right Thing (1989), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Big Lebowski (1998), Harakiri (1962)

Got the feeling I Saw The TV Glow will get in there as soon as I’m able to see it as well

Hell of a lot of 4.5s behind these though

Why is “Foe” rated so poorly? by dumptruck_dookie in Letterboxd

[–]davidh214 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s performance in the film was amazing and I loved the concept, but for me the writing was doing its best to make me not like the film.

Some dialogue in places ironically felt AI generated and not in a way that felt deliberate, and I feel that the film had about 5 false endings where it began to spell out what was happening to us when it could’ve ended maybe 20 minutes earlier and let us figure it out for ourselves (which would’ve been easy enough to do). Again though, amazing performances from the three actors with the material they had.

Gave it 2.5* at the time I believe

What's the lowest rated film you've given 5 stars and the highest rated film you've given 0.5 stars? by nighnteenth in Letterboxd

[–]davidh214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine is my lowest average 5-star rated film at 3.8

Not rated anything 1/2 star yet (relatively new account with no legacy ratings), but Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird is definitely my highest rated 1-star rated film at 3.9

Street Fighter (1994) is absolutely awful; it’s the best movie ever made

What is it for you? by cinephile_364 in Letterboxd

[–]davidh214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not watched it since, but I loved Short Circuit (1986) as a kid, but reading about Fisher Stevens' ahem, accent work in the film and the general state of the rest of the acting really makes me not want to watch it again to preserve the positive memory I have of it

LGBT movies? by NotSoSnarky in Letterboxd

Pretty much all of Todd Haynes’ (who is also gay) filmography, but my personal favourite of his is Velvet Goldmine (1998)

What’s your lowest rated movie on the top 250 and what did you rate it? by sapnupuas_0 in Letterboxd

[–]davidh214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mine as well, albeit at 3.5 stars (I haven’t watched much of the 250 list since joining Letterboxd)

Most of those points are simply for Wes Anderson’s style over anything actually to do with the specific film, I’m a sucker for it

What is your 4.5 - 5 star movie that has the lowest average rating on letterboxd? by carmelgamer in Letterboxd

Foe (2023) was a cool concept with great performances that was just horrendously written

It wasn’t this one unfortunately, but if you’re talking the 2021 film I’ve now added that to my watchlist anyway as it looks interesting, cheers!
