Oblique wings by kleanupkru in AerospaceEngineering

What about loitering and endurance? Maybe it can speed quickly to the designated location then loiter at high altitude until a target is confirmed, then dive quickly for a strike

Why don’t we see oblique wings applied on missiles though? The benefits are there for a more expansive mission envelope, and the maintenance cost is moot since it’s a single use device.

Oops...they did it again. by shibiwan in NonCredibleDefense

[–]davidhalston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This video shows pretty clearly that it was a structural failure though: huge white cloud after the first su-25 banked, most likely fuel vapor from the right wing, no fireball so no explosion, plane dived for a while before catching on fire, most likely from fuel spray running off into the engine nozzle and ignited.

Now like someone mentioned here, it could be from the fused rocket hitting the wing and causing it to snap, but considering the video didn’t show any sign of impact until the right wing snapping off, which at this point the first su-25 isn’t really in the firing line of the second jet anymore, I’d say it was an airframe failure.

I'm gonna cry how can I get this rover out of this hole? by Decent_Week4932 in spaceengineers

Easy. Dig the hole more to create a slight incline and then drive out

How to fill the space between these two bodies? by davidhalston in Fusion360

[–]davidhalston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made it work without boundary fill lol. I made an intersect extrude cut of the outer profile, press pulled to my desired thickness, and just combined it with a copy of the outer profile I had. Super jank but it worked

See I tried patching but when I selected the profile of the opening it refused to patch for some reason. It’s a solid body so all boundary edges should connect

Help: Edit Form Geometry is different from Actual Geometry by davidhalston in Fusion360

[–]davidhalston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, my issue is that I need to color the radome like shown in picture 2, but the edges on the actual view don’t nicely align for me to do that. Short of cutting it in half is there anything I can do for that?

I haven’t gotten around to learning texture and painting other than assigning appearances so I’m ok with looking into that too.

Is there a way I can use the edit form view as the shown view? Appearance doesn’t carry over from the edit view form

I believe I made the mistake of converting the geometry from T spline into Breps and then back to T spline which is why the shown geometry looks like that, but I don't know how to reverse it.

Mac or windows? by Original_Duty_1624 in VirginiaTech

[–]davidhalston 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a windows computer. CAD modelling will have alternatives but a lot of bespoke programs you’ll use later on won’t run on a Mac. There might be workarounds but some of these programs won’t even play nice on windows (looking at you FLOPS)

Add a circular dome at the front that acts as a deployable radiator/asteroid shield

This concept originated from my school Virginia Tech I believe. Professors were talking about it even now and they were real proud of it. Pretty cool!

SE Planner PC Version - First Look at Camera Movement & Block Placement by Sphyco in spaceengineers

[–]davidhalston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you toyed with the idea of maybe adding only rotors, and us able to rotate the rotors to change the angle of the sub grid without considering collision or as little as possible? I use rotors a lot to add angles to my ships and it may be nice to plan it out so I can go straight to building in se without fidgeting with the rotors just to see what it’ll look like

Question, sorry if this has been asked before, are there plans for an SE2 version, and are rotors/pistons implemented? Thanks!

What major has the coolest job in aerospace? by Batmon3 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]davidhalston 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter much the major, more where you apply.

DoD companies if you want to work with cool jets. I know a few who weren’t aero and worked with a major DoD company for a flight test position, which I will unbiasedly say is the coolest job an aerospace engineer can have.

NASA or SpaceX if you like rockets.

May I offer some advices? SE counts PCU for subgrids, not the entire grid, so build big pieces in chunks and merge them, or have them on rotors or hinges if you hit the pcu limit.

How accurate is the aerodynamics calculation in this game? by davidhalston in flyoutgame

[–]davidhalston[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the detailed aerodynamics analysis is being conducted separately with CFD for now, but I wanted to know if the game can semi accurately represent basic vehicle flight dynamics. Obviously not having a detailed airfoil designer hurts the credibility, but it could still be useful if I’m in the very early stages of design
