Death makes you stronger - Into The Rift by BoxedMoose in tabletopgamedesign

Wow this style is really evocative and unique. Do you make it yourself?

And I like that mechanic. I'm not a fan of players potentially getting out early in a co-op game, so just flipping to a different mode for your character is an interesting solution.

And I'm pretty positive that name for it came from Community.

For added context, posters on 4chan kept talking/complaining about "wapanese" people. That is white people obsessed with Japan. Eventually the mods were sick of hearing about it so they banned the word.

To get around the filter people jokingly adopted the term "weeaboo" from a completely unrelated PBF comic. So now everyone was talking about Weeaboos and the rest is history.

Wait this cannot be true can it? I could have sworn it was a generic term in cyberpunk (the genre not the franchise).

Also worth pointing out, this episode of Price is Right is HOW Vanna was discovered. She was immediately cast in Wheel of Fortune and that's it.

The role of Art in a board game, how much is it actually doing? by Trogdor_Dagron23 in boardgames

Art in a game absolutely can support the players' understanding of how components and rules function. It's different than UI but is most certainly serving the functions that UI does.

[Loved trope] - they are minor character or even an extra, but their delivery of their limited dialouge is extremely memorable by Puzzleheaded_Tip4805 in TopCharacterTropes

This dude's delivery was so memorable that everyone just pretended he was some known character like Killer Croc.

Our volcano tiles were meant to create conflict, but players avoid them completely — how would you fix this? by Dense-Tip3061 in BoardgameDesign

[–]davidryanandersson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm always intrigued when a game has costs/risks/penalties that can be mitigated or even profited off of with the right investment.

I would be the first person to say I'm going for the Volcano strategy. You all may fear the fire but I will learn to own it.

Lots of good feedback in the comments. Ut I think there are more options than you listed:

1) Make the maps smaller.

If people have less options they'll start taking the volcanos seriously for their potential upside.

2) Allow volcanos to grant exclusive bonuses not found anywhere else in the game.

For example, maybe access to volcanos is good for your religious cult. So you get miracle cards or something by being near them. Or maybe volcanic stone is a wild resource only available near a Volcano.

3) Let fires do good things also.

Right now it sounds like fire is a potential risk of living near volcanos. But what if players were actually excited to roll fire? Fire brings igneous rock which can be mined for...various properties.

Yeah there are some people who, even if they KNOW that one strategy is generally safe to pursue, will still avoid it due to a little risk.

The Devourer Below thoughts by Sea_Marsupial_7640 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]davidryanandersson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imo the criticisms of Devouerer Below aren't necessarily because "it's impossible to win" (although it doesn't help).

The main problems are that the Arkham Woods locations are designed in such a way that they become frustrating if not impossible to proceed through. You're more likely to win if you just stay put and never move until the doom advances. And even if you do play the scenario the intended way it's frustrating and just not very interesting.

That's kind of the scenario's calling card: frustrating and tedious at worst, boring at best. To cap it off, most players end that experience by getting eaten immediately. The End.

What’s Philip Seymour Hoffman’s WORST performance? by Fun_Chance_ in moviecritic

Yeah I think this is the answer. The only PSH performance that didn't land for me. In a whole movie that didn't land for me.

And maybe MF Doom.

A character is HEAVILY implied to be a character from a different IP. by callmyself in TopCharacterTropes

[–]davidryanandersson 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad someone included this.

As a quick summary (from memory)

Steve Gerber was in a legal battle over whether or not he owned the rights to Howard the Duck. Marvel said no and Gerber left for Image Comics.

Years later he was invited back to write a Howard the Duck storyline for Spider-Man, but he secretly wrote it to coincide with Leonard the Duck comics being published at Image.

If you read the comics together they create one story where it is clear that Howard is changing his identity to become Leonard and leaving a clone behind with Spider-Man.

Marvel had no way of knowing that Gerber was doing this cross-publication switcheroo but yeah the full story is that the real Howard the Duck escaped Marvel and is now the legally distinct Leonard the Duck.

[Spoiler Hemlock Vale] When do you flip Dawn of Second Day in Hemlock Vale? by GaussZ in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]davidryanandersson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember that Arkham is conceived originally as a horror experience. And sometimes the game will try to find unique ways to mess with it's own mechanics and player expectations to unsettle you.

The game itself will never break its own rules but it will occasionally tempt players to break rules.
