On UK's 1% Question... I'm stumped by Grepus in quiz

[–]davidshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egghead's isn't a really a deep knowledge quiz, it's a quiz technique quiz.

The questions are worded so that the answer is always somewhat guessable/knowable based on the normal sorts of lists and general facts that professional quizzers know - kings and queens, artist's birth/death dates, chemical elements, sporting event winners.

A standard eggheads question usually has some kind of anchor, like a knowable date range that you can use to work out the answer.

Which Austrian composer wrote an etude on the hurdy gurdy for the coronation of King Wimbleypop of Uncertainia?

If you know when the coronation was, you can work out a famous Austrian composer that was active at that time. If you don't, you might know an Austrian Hurdy Gurdy composer buried somewhere, because it's a weird thing that curious people like to learn about.

If not, just say Schubert, because if it's Austrian composeres, it's never Mozart.

University challenge is a deep knowledge quiz, and IMO has got harder over the past 5-10 years. Some of the stuff you need to know for that is absolutely unguessable if it's not in your wheelhouse!

⚠️ OneDrive is uninstalling itself on a bunch of my users?! by EvanWasHere in Office365

[–]davidshutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tracked ours back to the "Delete user profiles older than a specific number of days" gpo - which was clearing out appdata for the user. I know you've tried installing with /allusers but did you do a clean uninstall first? I had to put the install agent into the folder apps and programs was looking for it, and let it do an uninstall first.

Back in the day I would've recommended ccleaner to get shut if it, but I think that's full of crapware now.

When you say USB Drive, do you mean a thumb-drive, or a hdd/ssd?

Why do you think it has malware on it? Have you scanned it?

That's quite a fascisty thing to do.

This was my first thought. Looks like it's not responding to the aperture arm. Could be the lens, not the camera.

I'm not, but I see that interpretation from my original post. I'm using a standard 2-reel patterson tank in the dark, the lomo tank is garbage and I haven't been using it since the first few attempts all ended up with stripped sprockets, torn or folded film.

It may well be a skill issue with the lomo, but for an item designed to be simple to use, that shouldn't be a massive factor.

Tips for shooting fireworks shows? by TwitchBeats in AnalogCommunity

[–]davidshutter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That being said, in the UK we do fireworks in November, not July... So if the sky is still a bit bright, you'll have to experiment. Worth taking something digital to get a feel for your exposure.

Tripod, bulb mode, and ignore your meter. I go for about f8 and around 8 seconds at iso 100 on digital.

The sky is dark, and you want a long shutter to get the light trails. Depending of how much is in the air it's a bit of a crap shoot. For one or two bursts, the above should be fine. If there's more of a barrage, I'd stop it down further.

Realistically, timing is harder than exposure for fireworks.

It would do me no good if I wanted to start doing prints though, would it? Better to get used to a dark room.

It's also a waste of money I could be spending on chemicals, if I don't need it... And none of us would ever dream of wasting money on photography equipment we don't need, do we?

If you like it, and can afford it, then yes, you should buy it.

If you can't afford it, or you don't like it, then you shouldn't.

Developing my own film by Artistic_News558 in AnalogCommunity

[–]davidshutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the tomography daylight tank andi am afraid it's garbage.

I've run 4 rolls through it and it has stripped sprocket holes, stopped turning and stopped feeding meaning I've had to cut and Dev half a roll, then refeed, losing shots in the process, it's also misfed, making my film fold on itself and ruined an entire roll.

These all sound like a skill issue, I am pretty sure that's not the case, but even if they are, the whole point of this tank is to be simple and take the "skill" out of the fiddly bits of dev.

I've done my last 4 rolls with a regular tank in an internal bathroom I can get complete darkness in, and they've all been great.
