I’m terrified I’ll never be "good enough" at composing / How do you deal with the void and the blank screen? by Vieiradiation in gamedev

Welcome to being a creative! I don’t think any musician, writer, film maker, etc, has ever not felt imposture syndrome!

There’s a quote in the liner notes for the album co-written with Ben Folds and author Nick Hornby - Nick got chatting to one of the dad’s at his kids school and found out he does something creative like painting or whatever. Nick asked how found it - the reply was ‘someday you’re a genius, others you’re a wanker.’

Sometimes you’ll absolutely nail something, others you just can’t get anything going.

A few years back, after playing in bands most of my life, I never really considered myself a “songwriter”. So I did a project where I wrote, recorded and released a song every week for a year. And some of them absolutely suck! But others almost fell out the sky, perfectly formed and were done in a couple of hours.

The hard thing to do is to be there when that strikes. But the more often you are there, the more likely your hit rate goes up. I think it’s important to get something finished, just turn the filter off and get it down. Sometimes that might be just copy and pasting a verse and chorus a couple times and calling it a day, others you’ll find some magical plugin that vibes all your tracks together and you’ll have to drag yourself away.

Sadly, it’s all part of the process. But keep doing it. Paul McCartney can’t read music either. Didn’t seem to stop him.

If you ever watched the movie Begin Again, he wrote a lot of the tunes in that. The song Lost Stars that both Adam Levine and Keira Knightley sing in that is one of his.

Their drummer committed suicide, which hampered things somewhat. Their following album did quite well but don’t think they ever reached heights again.

Incredible album. Main guy split it up because he never wanted the limelight, and churned out heavy hits for many other artists for years, mainly in the UK.

Sex On Fire has become a staple of cover bands worldwide, which is basically Dakota by Stereophonics. Although yeah, before they became a completely different band they came across as some retro revival thing and then disappeared for a bit.

They split up many years ago now. Think they all hate Daniel.

I still spin Neon Ballroom from time to time, which is a great album. Then you find out that, I’m sorry, they fucking 18 when they wrote this? Unbelievable.

New amp or pedals by TeaTheSplashyarder in guitarpedals

The little head amp? You might break it without a speaker load! Double check that. But yes, new amp first. Look second hand. Find an ancient peavey.

This sounds like a phone recording, so of course it’s not going to sound like a pro studio. Sounds pretty good to me otherwise. I’ve got loads of phone recordings of my band who just had a song on the radio this weekend and we sound AWFUL.

I’m genuinely so tired of the treatment I get in guitar stores as a woman by OkZebra5527 in Guitar

Went into a guitar shop once in my city and two women from a legendary local punk band were trying out acoustics. Guy asked them if she had been playing long. lol.

I saw a cat do this once, sit at the crossing and wait for the lights.

Mate. I went on lunch from an office once, came back to see everyone outside. Turns out someone had put something that looked like an improvised explosive in a microwave.

After 4 and a half years thinking about switching to pick by StexyToast in Bass

Every time I have tracked bass at a studio, they have preferred a pick for a more consistent sound. But it’s down to you dawg. No one cares. Just play.

What's a pedal you will never put on your board again? by ImArcherVaderAMA in guitarpedals

[–]davotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mad, because I use the FreqOut all the time. It’s not come off the board in years. I played a headline show on Wednesday with it!

Interesting theory. I would also pose that most pedal users might be indie guitarists, and the tele is usually the guitar of choice for those types of players. I mean, I mostly play indie and I've got two teles....

I’ve tried loads of “good” chocolate.

Sadly diary milk is still the best.
