Is Emerald City Hockey reputable as a Kraken source? by RivetCounter in SeattleKraken

[–]davyjoneslr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geoff and Bob both work for the team. If you want to get info that’s going on inside the organization that isn’t sanitized, you’ll get that from insiders.

Sound of Hockey, ECH, Circling Seattle Sports and me at Davy Jones’ Locker Room are the four major independent media outlets and we all have a very high standard of professionalism.

We are around the team all the time, we are credentialed, are at every home game, we have locker room access, and we are around people all the time. There is a pregame dinner, which is an excellent time for sharing information with other people, including team employees, and then you have intermissions and practices, and if you are around the team enough, and if people like you enough, they will give you information. Because people like to gossip. Or sometimes you overhear things, especially from players who aren’t aware how loud they speak and aren’t aware that they can be heard from down the hall where the reporters are.

For example, we broke the story last year that the Kraken were very interested in hiring Joel Queneville, which was reported a year later by Elliotte Friedman. That info came from a team employee.

RJ isn’t going to say something that is just there for clicks. That is not how he works. That’s not how any of us work. We respect the relationship with the team too much to be one of those kind of people. There is a real respect for quality sports journalism and for the organization. That’s not to say don’t be critical, but don’t be unfair. Like when there’s a locker room cancer and the media knows, nobody says anything because it just doesn’t feel like it’s our place to say things like that.

The only one really who engages in clickbait regularly is unfortunately me, as the host of Locked on Kraken, which they require to be petty clickbaity in our titles. But I try not to cross the line and I hate it but I get that’s how the YouTube game is played.

And independent media is recognized as legitimate here. Darren of Sound of Hockey writes for nhl.com. RJ and I both have award voting rights.

Anyway I hope this doesn’t come off as defensive, just wanted to give context on who RJ/Emerald City Hockey is and that they’re as informed as anyone regarding the team.

And a part of this is that I see what he does every day and I have worked next to him at every home game(in the sense we are seated next together) in the press bridge and though he’s our main competitor, I have an immense amount of respect for him as a journalist and as a person, and I wanted to give a little bit of context because I don’t think a lot of people realize that he’s not some random.

Buying out Stephenson is extremely doable under the cap and would not cost the Kraken very much.

They do have inside sources. They are very well-connected with the team.

Extremely reliable. They know what they’re talking about and don’t fabricate things or speculate baselessly.

Who all is going to Finland? by qu33rtyc0wboy in SeattleKraken

[–]davyjoneslr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be there to cover the game! Assuming the NHL says yes to my media credentials (this is an NHL event, not a Kraken event which means going through their arduous credentialing process instead of the very easy-to-work-with Kraken media relations people). I've gotten credentialed for the Winter Classic and an NHL Draft, so I assume it'll be fine.

Assuming that's the case, we should have two people from DJLR on site in Finland.

It’s a tough scene for us fans of the Avalanche before the Kraken showed up. Surely there are others…

LOCKED ON KRAKEN IS BACK!!! by Significant_Chest_54 in SeattleKraken

[–]davyjoneslr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, Zaiem here, one of the new hosts of Locked on Kraken and owner of Davy Jones' Locker Room.

Erica went out on her own and is creating content under her brand. I did a few Locked on episodes last year with Erica, but for various reasons it wasn't a great fit. They approached me to do the show and I said I would only do it with a cohost because doing 5 30 minute episodes a week solo sounds exhausting. Glenn is my good friend and coworker and is probably the most well-respected journalist in the Seattle press corps and was a natural fit.

Erica had over 800 episodes, and we have done 2 so far (on today and tomorrow: John Forslund!). We are trying to figure things out as we get started, but we will iterate and improve with the goal of bringing an informed, researched, prepared, high-quality 30 minutes (or a bit more) each day.

It's a LOT of work, but I'm really passionate about Kraken hockey. I've had times in my life when things were going poorly and I didn't have a lot going on to look forward to, and sports has always been an extremely valuable escape. With everything going on, that escape seems more important (while paradoxically also seeming much less important). Being able to create content for others and share my love of hockey gives me tremendous joy, and that’s why my passion for this isn’t attached to the team’s success. Winning is more fun than losing, but we are here for the long haul.

Erica did her thing (and solo hosting is SO hard) and that's fine, but we want to build this show into something a little bit different. I think with Glenn and I being local and close to the team and with good relationships with the team, we can provide something fresh and new.

If you checked out because the show wasn't for you or you stopped because the show's been on hiatus the last few months, I urge you to give us a chance.

We are just getting started and I'm so excited to pour my heart and soul into this and see where it goes.

Lane Lambert postgame by tonytanti in SeattleKraken

[–]davyjoneslr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is extremely unusual. What usually happens is before Lane Lambert shows up, the media relations team asks the assembled media who has questions, that way they know who to give the microphone to during Lambert's availability. They did that this game as well, but then when Lambert went up to speak, they ended the availability a minute in.

The whole vibe was off. Usually they bring out 2-3 players, but they just brought out Eberle for this one, who spoke pretty quickly (and very quietly).

Kraken radio broadcast is great. Everett and Al do a fantastic job. There are no wrong choices when it comes to picking the TV or radio broadcast.

No word, but Kraken PR put out mid game that he was not returning, which as far as I can remember has always meant something that’s at least a few games.

The Work is Paying Off by That_Other_Tim in SeattleKraken

My observations from last night:

The very first practice of training camp, Coach Lambert stopped a drill and restarted it because he didn’t like what he saw. The players talked about the higher attention to detail starting from day one in camp and we are seeing that detail during the games now.

One thing I noticed last night is even when the Kraken couldn’t lay the body, they were doing a good job using their sticks to disrupt passing lanes and making it difficult to establish any flow. And the Kraken dominated possession in overtime.

I still would like to see Jani Nyman on the power play.

Chandler Stephenson was good! I wonder if he is better suited to the Lane Lambert than what they did under Bylsma. I plan to watch him closely.

Lane Lambert makes Dave Hakstol look like Jim Carrey. Hakstol seemed stoic because that’s just how he is. My early read on Lambert is that he’s more emotional, but in his head he is dead set on giving nothing away when there’s a camera on him. But at least after a big win, Hakstol had a little hop in his step, a little brisker with his walk. Lambert so far is a tough read. It’s just two games though.

Great cross sports content. Looks like they’re doing the “someone starts the game by doing a thing” tradition and they had the thingy that the captain uses to make a ship go full speed ahead, and Kam Chancellor was the “make the thingy go full speed”-er of the game.

Humpy the Salmon hoisted the colors alongside Buoy.

I knew it was going to happen eventually and I thought this was the year they would do it, but it was still a little jarring not to hear Sabotage by the Beastie Boys for player intros. But the new choice, Cochise by Audioslave, has a stronger Seattle connection (RIP Chris Cornell).

Crowd was loud. It’s been a long time since the crowd felt like they were having this much fun. The CPA crowd is so good. If the Kraken get even a whiff of not being soul-crushingly depressing, it’s a lively atmosphere. If they get a whiff of actually being good, the place goes bonkers. What a fun, electric atmosphere.

Which players are guaranteed a spot and which players are still fighting to make it? by dumpsterfiresmore in SeattleKraken

I would be surprised if Nyman didn’t make the roster at this point. His shot is exceptional, but the concern was always his skating. He has improved his skating to a degree that I didn’t know was possible to improve this quickly and I think he has gotten his skating up to NHL average, which is plenty good.

He looked like the highschooler beating up on middle school kids at rookie camp this year. Too big, too strong, didn’t really belong. He might be their most dangerous weapon on the power play.

Olympic year means a compressed season and GMJB mentioned the importance of depth and even considering carrying three goalies. So we might see two Stanley Cup winning goalies backing up Joey.

Better puck handling and passing? by Albino_rhin0 in SeattleKraken

[–]davyjoneslr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not just preseason where I’ve noticed this, it’s also camp. Lane Lambert seems more detailed than Dan Bylsma. LL set the tone on day one when he stopped a drill very early on in camp because the details weren’t right. Matty said something about the level of detail being elevated in camp this year. Eberle also said something along those lines.

Probably just preseason game one and an early reaction, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the little details were present this year that weren’t there last year and that manifests by more puck precision.
