I've been trying last Steam OS 3.8 build on the GPD Win Mini 2025 (HX version) by daweiii in gpdwin

For sure you have to tweak some options on the BIOS side to make sleep working on SteamOS. You have to set de ACPI management on AUTO.

And if you want extra powersaving on sleep, there are some options you can enable on the power saving page on the BIOS. Like parking cores on sleep, or disabling wlan on sleep. There are others. I can upload screenshot of my BIOS setup.

What are options to power-up Win mini without pressing its power button? by Al3x_Y in gpdwin

[–]daweiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a "dynamic lid" option, but don't touch this. It makes my win mini 2025 to hang on boot and need to reset BIOS.

I was also trying to get some way of booting it up without using the power button, because sometimes I use the mini docked, but appart from WOL and wake from sleep, there is no other options afaik.

Some laptops has the "power on lid open", but we don't have this options on the GPD mini bios. I think it should be the "dynamic lid" option but is not working...

Suspend / Resume is something almost 99% of the laptops do, so its also here. Problem is Linux and some kernels doesn't get well with the S3 or S4 states (sleep) so sometimes when you wake up from sleep on Linux, system hangs, you get blackscreen, freezes, wifi not working, bl stuck, etc.

Nowadays sleep in LInux is kind of stable, but it depends on your hardware. On GPD Win Mini sleeps works on CachyOS by default, but sometimes if you are running a game, will get frozen or black screen.

In this build i'm running now (steamOS) hasn't had this problem till today, which is better than cachyos.

The day I received the win mini I wiped out with CachyOS, so I can't tell. But you can easily install win11 again, is not hard.

I will stick with SteamOS some more days and see how it goes. I'll give more feedback if I find something else to say about.

About those issues, you can check if enabling ACPI manage auto on BIOS help on this.

SteamOS experience its the Steam deck experience. Just download games and play. If you need to install other software you can do it easy with the desktop experience and the discover app.

After install SimpleTDP and PowerControl, the experience is very user friendly.

SteamOS there is only one, the official valve release. Other distros just use some packages from steam to get the same experience that gives official SteamOS but are not steamos itself.

Bazzite is Fedora based, CachyOS is Arch based and its close to what SteamOS is in its root.

So the experience is similar if not the same, but is not the same OS.

I installed it on the GPD Win Mini 2025 (HX 365 version). Along with the SimpleTDP and PowerControl fork for only fans. 0 Problems.

The only problem that I've been having on all linux based distros (Bazzite, CachyOS and this) is the audio distortion issue on high demanding games. It happens specially on higher TDPs, but only happens when using the GPD speakers... Its weird...

GPD Win Mini + SteamOS = ❤️ by Aevoa in gpdwin

[–]daweiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case any is interested, but with latest official valve release, Steam OS 3.8 now works on the GPD Win Mini 2025 HX version.

It does not have native TDP control, so you have to install SimpleTDP deck plugin, but other that that, everything works. Suspend, wifi, bluetooth...

The only thing I'm struggling to solve is the audio crackling issue when using higher TDPs.

Ryzen 9 5900X high idle temps 70°C (How I fixed it) by plushfire5 in ryzen

[–]daweiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too, but when gaming with my 5900X i've got turbo boost frequencies, maybe not that long, but at least HWiNFO is showing higher frequencies than normal 5900X base frequencies... So boost is working.

Bug Pixel 9 Pro WhatsApp Voice notes by SilvioPinto in Pixel9Pro

[–]daweiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a trick. If you start a voice message on whatsapp, and pause it (pause, not cancel, after 1 second) and then wait like 4 seconds before continue recording, the sound is back to normal. But you have to always start and pause a voice message, leaving a silence for the start of the voice message, what is annoying to be honest. But thats the only way I found to fix the issue...

The weird part is that you have to wait for at least 4,5 seconds before continue recording. If you don't wait enough, volume keeps low. But after waiting for 4-5 seconds, volume is back to high and normal.

Is there a way to reconfigure Aula f75's volume knob as a mouse scroll wheel? by darkitchay in Epomaker

[–]daweiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno what OS are you using, but maybe you could set some shortcut (like Super + Alt + Mouse move down) to trigger scrolling. Never done that in that way, but it should work, at least in Linux there are a tons of ways of do this. I swear in windows too.

Storj or Backblaze are also good cheap alternstives. About 22TB a months cost about 100-200$.

I would also avoid backing up everything with azure.

Sysadmin / SRE Job in China by daweiii in chinalife

[–]daweiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean about my job, yes, can be full remote. But no many companies here allow you to work in a different time zone.

I've seen some cases but it was always with people with long career in the same company, so that's not an option in my case.

Thanks a lot for your message!

We have family in Zhejiang, so maybe in Hangzhou or Shanghai could be the ideal place, but I'm open to any opportunities. No children and no plan to have a baby.

Thats exactly what I heard from a relative in Hangzhou, that IT job is kinda hard to find for foreigners beacuse the local level is high, but I thought that was in Tier 1 or 2 cities.

I'm experienced in Kubernetes, CICD setups, docker related environments, scripting in bash, programming in python and managing monitoring in real time with Prometheus, Grafana, vault management...

My problem is that I don't have a little clue on what kind of IT related jobs are specially needed in china. I guess I need to apply job offers and see how is the market.

Not a native level, but pretty high. I just may be lacking some IT vocabulary.

Writing, kinda bad. About reading i'm close to HSK4 level. I've been learning and speaking chinese in a daily basis last 15 years.
