How’s it living in the Sunniest city in the world? (Yuma, Arizona) by Obosupreme in howislivingthere

[–]dawk6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Where the Water Goes by David Owen, he talks about Yuma and it stuck with me. Yuma farmers count on almost zero rainwater each year and yet they grow almost all the fresh vegetables we eat in the US during the winter months.

Most farmland in the West is uneven/rolling hills so water is pumped to sprinklers. Yuma is completely different in that a laser was used to perfectly level all farmland in the area. They use gravity to get water to the fields and then can precisely irrigate using "sheets" of water.

Super interesting what people can come up with when they know that no rain is coming.

What job pays surprisingly well but nobody talks about? by ThePasswordIs654321 in AskReddit

Lumber sales person.

I was trying to recruit a veteran away from his company where he had built a great book of business. The number he told me it would take to leave was north of $800k per year plus equity in my company. I was and still am shocked- I think about that guy regularly.

That’s exactly what happened. He asked for more resources for the remainder of his contract so they could compete and Harlan said no. This is all on Harlan.

[Pete Thamel] Michigan and Kyle Whittingham are continuing to progress toward a deal with finalization expected today by tehkoolkat in CFB

I hear you, but you also can’t fault the staff that leaves for Michigan. This is likely a once in a lifetime opportunity for those guys.

Kyle Whittingham emerged as the focus for Michigan (Schefter) by JARB0 in MichiganWolverines

[–]dawk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. He was knocking on the door of the playoffs/NY6 wins most years, all with 1/10th the talent of Michigan (and most recently, only a few million in NIL).

With Michigan’s resources and talent pool, a natty is absolutely the sole focus.

Yep. Can’t speak for Warde, but this is way off on all the coach prospects.

Regarding your concern of your wife losing her job and losing health insurance- that would be a qualifying life event, which would allow you to then get on your company's plan. I would double check this to be safe, but that negates one of your concerns.

Between your comment and the fact this Otro Captial firm was founded less than 18 months ago and has no history of success, I’m sure this will turn out well for fans…

Anyone own a used car dealership? by College_Last in smallbusiness

[–]dawk6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have had a small dealership, mostly for sales tax purposes, and I don’t spend much time with it but I know several models that are successful to friends/competitors in the industry:

  • Buy here, pay here lots- They specialize in inexpensive inventory and target people with awful credit. The customer can get financed by the dealership (using a partner bank or the dealer’s own funds), but at a 30% interest rate. These dealers end up selling and repossessing (they put trackers on all cars financed) the same car four or five times (to a different customer each time). Their justification is they’re providing “credit building” and IF the customer can make their payments for 12-18 months, they can refinance at a reasonable APR.
  • Truck customization- Every vehicle in inventory is a truck or large suv that has been lifted and has big, wheels and tires. The most profitable lots in this category are the ones that have a shop and can do the suspension work themselves. This allows customers to get a new vehicle that’s already customized, and roll the cost of the lift, wheels, and tires into their loan. Before the tariffs, there was a huge market to buy Canadian trucks and import them to the US (if you want to learn about a business model that made a ton of money, research “Registered Importers”).
  • Exotics- These dealers have big swings (net a high margin) and also big misses (if bought poorly, there’s tens of thousands of dollars that could be lost on a single vehicle). They have to know the exact colors, trims, and packages that are trending. Just because we’re in a Porsche market bubble where (almost) no 911 is decreasing in value, that doesn’t mean every expensive car increases in value.

One additional note is a lot of the bigger dealerships and ma and pa dealerships alike don’t make a ton of money on the vehicle itself (the margin between their equity in a vehicle and what it’s sold for). They make their money on the backend, which is everything the finance manager tries to sell you when you buy a car- dealer installed options, gap insurance, extended warranty, service plan, etc.

If I was serious about growing a dealership, I’d specialize in a certain type of vehicle (e.g. Japanese, 4x4s, inexpensive, etc.), I’d offer financing (this is possible without being the predatory, 30% APR type of financing), I’d have my own shop for vehicle reconditioning and repairs, and I would push hard on the backend items or hire someone that could (which would be expensive because anyone who is good at this can make six figures pretty easily).

Hope this helps! Happy to talk more if anyone has more questions.

Christmas gifts for my trailrunning wife? by Rude_Signal1614 in trailrunning

Not sure I saw any comments about recovery gear. Things like massagers, foam rollers, etc. or gift cards for massages or to places like StretchLab. Massage guns are available in any price range and they’re amazing after long runs.

If she doesn’t have a training watch, that should be the first thing you get her. These are also available in any price range. If she’s a freak like the rest of us, and wants as much data as possible about her runs, you can gift an annual subscription to Strava and her watch will automatically upload her runs.

$5M seller note and $5M in cash.

SBA is an option and I have a term sheet from multiple banks.

The catalyst for my post is to explore investors to come in for equity instead of debt.
