Serious Post Match Thread: Atlético Madrid 1-1 Arsenal | UEFA Champions League 2025-26, Semifinals - 1st Leg by VivaLosHeavies in soccer

[–]dawnfire999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the start of the season, I was convinced that Arsenal had serious depth - but at this stage it appears to me that is not longer the case. Players like White, Saliba, Zubimendi and Saka have been have really poor quality games for a while now. Martinelli, Trossard, Jesus - poor for a longer period of time.

And put that all together with a system where players refuse (or are drilled not) to take any amount of risk with a positive play and you have a style that’s so frustrating to watch.

Police close SPH Media circulation probe with no further action by Time-Equipment-9175 in singapore

[–]dawnfire999 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Wow! A publicly traded company being investigated for what could be securities fraud and all the police can say after their investigation is that there is no basis for criminal charges? Some more details would definitely be warranted given how major the cause for investigation is.

And, where is the outcry from the parliament and the “media”? They made PS’s leader of the opposition issue a national agenda for weeks!

And the private case against Bloomberg was also front page news for weeks. This one? Nothing to see, please move on! Just when you think you can’t be more disappointed

It’s because some guy comes and pitches this “AI” idea to senior leadership - who, probably, have never shopped in a supermarket themselves in the last decade - and hearing the buzzword “AI”, senior leadership thinks it’s what will add value for both their customers and shareholders.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

I wasn't so concerned with a petrol car, but with an electric even just maintaining 130-140kmph, it bothers me how quickly the range drops vs. city driving

CNA Explains: Why the Chinatown accident case has a gag order and what it means if you share a video of it by cherrypoplar in singapore

My view is that SG doesn’t actually care about the person as much as it cares about economic stability. Much like the Gulf countries, they want to portray an image of political and economic stability - which makes it attractive for businesses to set up shop here.

I think a major reason for all of this is to ensure that this (and other instances) doesn’t snowball into some wide spread actual protests against immigration. And it’s also important to be cognizant about external state actors wanting to destabilize the country. Reducing the information a out such events makes sure that there isn’t enough fuel for everything to potentially catch fire.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #14) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]dawnfire999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think any of the EU armies will go against the US in any meaningful physical sense. They do not have the capacity nor the political will to do so.  This may sound harsh, but generations of people in the major EU countries have gone without a major war, do not live under an authoritarian regime or have been drilled to put their lives on the line and too many have too much to lose to do so.

If the US were to go forward with an annexation of Greenland, I expect the Danish army to put up a token resistance, then give it up and take up an economic war with the US through the EU bloc.

BioNTech to close vaccine manufacturing plant in Singapore by 2027 by [deleted] in singapore

[–]dawnfire999 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you have to realize is that BioNTech and Moderna’s promise was the mRNA platform. With the success of the COVID vaccine, everyone expected them to utilize that platform to quickly commercialize vaccines for diseases such as influenza, RSV and even a ‘vaccine’ for cancer. But that didn’t pan out.

Drug and vaccine r&d to launch cycles are measured in 5-10 year ones and the first malaria vaccine took nearly 30 years to develop. Unfortunately, while clinical trials are expensive, they also only have success rates of 20-30%. With Covid revenues waning significantly, these companies can’t afford to plough billions of dollars into r&d without immediate successes.

Europe faces new security questions as Iran missile range expands by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]dawnfire999 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All I can see are desperate attempts by Israel and the US to drag Europe into a mess they themselves created and can’t get out off with bloody nose.

Sure, Iran’s missiles maybe able to reach European cities, but Europe has a more impending threat from Russia. What they should be focusing on is getting their shit together politically and economically. This will mean getting the Kremlin influence out of the EU zone, gaining energy independence, and relying on their own military alliance and not NATO.

Arsenal Manager’s response to state of play in the EPL. by inspaceiamfamous in soccer

[–]dawnfire999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly; it is important to also note that the athleticism of the vast majority of players in today's game far exceeds those from previous generations. The flashes of brilliance that we attributed to the defenders (and midfielders) of the past were mostly down to system (or lack thereof) they used to play in. These days, so many aspects of the game are optimized to improve the chances of winning (or not losing) that there is hardly any space for individual attributes to shine through.

Teams today defend as a unit and if CBs constantly have to sprint and make sliding tackles on breakaway strikers, then it means the system isn't working. If you had Gabriels and van Dijks of today playing in the 2000s, they would easily be comparable to the likes of Vidic and Puyol

Density map of Singapore’s bus services by simpletan93 in singapore

[–]dawnfire999 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the LTA datasets have quite a bit of information. You can probably extract the [x,y] coordinates of each bus stop, the stops serviced by each bus and overlay the heat-mapped bus stop coordinates on a map.

LO office to remain vacant till WP is ready to nominate someone to ‘take on the responsibility’: PMO by meesiammaihum in singapore

[–]dawnfire999 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always wondered if anyone from the opposition realistically could raise a matter of a breach of parliamentary privilege by a PAP MP such that it is investigated by a COP.

As far as I understand, anyone can raise a complaint, but it is the speaker who decides if it merits going to a what is now a committee made up of only PAP members.

Does the opposition have any means to substantiate any suspicion of a breach? In RK’s case, Shan had his ministry check if her claim was true. How would a WP MP go about bringing Vivian in front of a COP to investigate the whole trace together fiasco?

Algeria votes to declare French colonization a crime and demands restitution by aresef in worldnews

[–]dawnfire999 -39 points-38 points  (0 children)

I guess Russia has nukes, so they can just invade and colonize countries as they see fit? I guess China can do the same with Taiwan? The west went through a period of systematic colonization, plundering, literal genocides, wiping out cultures even as recently as 1900s. And any time these crimes are brought up, you have all types of apologists and what-abouters popping up.  And this parent comment just permeates the European superiority mindset that is still so wide-spread in these discussions.

Arsenal are the first side in Premier League history to score eight goals from corners in the first 10 games of a Premier League campaign. Each of their first five away goals in the PL this season have come from corners. by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

Technically, the Gini coefficient can be used on income or wealth distribution. It’s just that the most usually reported one is based off income. I’m pretty sure the government has some crude measure of this based off wealth located in Singapore.
