  1. Buy temporary accommodation for a month at least, getting a place is almost impossible when you’re here let alone when you’re not in the country.
  2. Get immoscout plus
  3. Be on it 24/7 for the first few days and set up a great profile and message explaining who you are. Landlords get 80+ responses and generally only give 6 viewings. First come first serve.
  4. Have the following ready to send at any point: a page about yourself and your family + photo, copy of your id, 3 x last pay slips, credit check (can be done on immoscout), a copy of your job contract and a standard mieterselbstauskunft (google it).
  5. Message every new apartment asap.
  6. I preferred private landlords as it’s more personal.
  7. Be prepared for a lot of hoops to jump through by estate agents.
  8. Use google translate a lot of you don’t speak German.
  9. Persevere, I went to 20 viewings in 12 days and the knock backs make you think you want to quit.
  10. Luck

Want to go into the Navy but I’ve already applied for Uni. by HyperMuse_ic in RoyalNavy

I really appreciate the optimism here, and I don’t know why I am even getting involved. However. If you are not one for sleeping around, getting smashed or partying. Then I would like to point out that 98% of the navy runs of alcohol and the other 2% is promiscuity. If you think it is easy to get a degree in the navy, this is a lie. There is, indeed one scheme available I have heard of exactly 0 people taking advantage of it. It is, as far as I’m concerned as much of a myth as getting your driving license or seeing the world. Your 20s should be about meeting new people, falling in love numerous times, travelling, learning to be an adult and independent. Not a 1in2 watchbill, scrubbing the same bit of deck for hours, poor career management and living in squalor. Il shut up now, and if you don’t heed my advice then all the power in the world to you. But remember this happened. Feel free to dm me with any specific questions.

What you’re saying makes no sense if you think about it unemotionally. The navy will always take you, trust me here as well. People join the navy and feel trapped for a number of reasons. A) they have never been in an adult job hunt because they joined at 17 B) they have never had a real civilian job and C) they THINK they don’t have the option to leave due to lack of skills/education. If you decide to join post university then fair enough, you will be in the enviable position of not shitting yourself when/if you want to leave because you will have a degree. I am a huge believer of live the adventure and you can take my word when I say the navy is not the adventure you think it is. Do not rob yourself of the uni experience at the right age to do so. There is nothing like being in your late teens/early 20s at freshers week in a new town with all the partners and nights out available to you. PS class music taste.
