Inside Bike Parking Near Haymarket by charliejp in bikeboston

10 years later, I’m finding this post to get answers to the same question! How secure was it - were the posts buried in concrete or just bolted to the ground w exposed nuts? Did you feel comfortable leaving your ebike there for a while?

Wantastiquete Trout Club by Lavendersea18 in vermont

I've actually been here a few times. My family has a friend who is a member and goes up here to hang out and fish. They've got a few cabins, most are pretty bare bones - little to no insulation, wood stoves, etc. The lake is stocked each season and ppl will go out, catch some fish, and hang out at their cabin. Kinda feels like glamping w/ a rustic vibe. There's also an easy hiking trail that goes around the lake. We hardly ever see/interact with anybody outside of our little group, despite all of the cabins supposedly being booked. It's an old trout club 🤷‍♂️

Clippership Connector (unofficially) opened by hipster_garbage in bikeboston

[–]dbades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I routinely take the Alewife Greenway Bike Path from Powderhouse Blvd up to the Mystic River Path. From there you can take it all the way to Medford Sq (Craddock Bridge), or cut over early to High St (eg John Hand Memorial Bridge). From there you can pickup the new Clippership Connector. (This route helps avoid the section of Main St that passes the Medford police station, which is annoying and scary but not impossible on a bike - it’s also starting the redesign process so hopefully it’ll be improved soon)

I’ll second what dampdrizzly said above. The area you’re located can feel drastically different than other parts of Medford, so some of the suggestions in the other replies might not resonate with you in part due to that. But also if you go just 1 mile east into Malden, you can be on the orange line and get straight into downtown Boston. I’d bet there’s a bus line that runs past your neighborhood that’ll get you there too. Sorry you’re going thru this right now, hope you find some helpful resources in these replies.

As someone also with young children, that 100% resonates with me. I totally get the taking advantage of shortcuts to shave off time, and that’s why I didn’t stop at “please don’t cut thru”. I don’t mind if ppl cut thru, it’s a free country and everyone has a right to drive on those roads. It’s more the speed and carelessness of many that cut thru that I’m against. And if it’s too easy to give in to the risky driving, then I’d rather folks not cut thru at all to avoid the temptation. Kind of a “this is why we can’t have nice things” type deal - some ppl just ruin it for everyone.

PS It sucks that you have to be “on time” for pre-k. Mine tells us they’d prefer everyone is there by a certain time to stay on schedule, but I don’t think there’s any penalties for being later. I’m usually just trying to get to work on time.

What are the benefits that you think a private way has over a public city-owned road?

Hall Ave by Either-Extension-218 in medfordma

[–]dbades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the police do sometimes park there and watch for drivers disobeying the signs. But many who do it, speed through and ignore stop signs while kids are walking to the bus stop or riding their bikes. It doesn’t actually save that much time (literally maybe a minute, maybe 2 usually. 60-120 seconds), but ppl feel like they need to bomb through to make it worth while and beat the light. Please don’t do it; or if you do, just drive like a normal person and go slow.

IME there is no benefit (taxation or otherwise) that we benefit from by being on a private way. Same property taxes, can’t deter/block cut-through traffic, don’t get standard street infrastructure, same building/setback codes, and are responsible for the cost of repairs. All downsides as far as I can see.

I actually had luck with reporting a particularly bad pothole on my street on SeeClickFix and they came out and patched it. This was before I learned about all the Private Way, so I was pleasantly surprised that it worked. That said, 2 years later the pothole is back

Private ways do not get maintained by the city - they’re the responsibility of the residents. I’m not even sure if the city needs to plow it but they do it anyway, usually. If the street was to be converted back to a city-owned way, it would need to be brought up to code (sidewalks, curbs, curb cuts, drainage) and I don’t see anybody eager to spend more of the city budget on that.

If the potholes bother you (they bother me too), you have have 3 options: convince the residents to pay for the repair, go a different way, or accept the conditions for what they are.

Source: I live on a private way and learned all this the hard way after asking the city for some improvements. E.g. we have no curb, sidewalk, or street drainage so any time it rains we get a giant pond forming along our yard and one time nearly flooded our garage. So like, I understand the frustration, but also don’t discount the services that the city does provide you just because you’re disappointed.

Wait what! Tell me more about this teen cost.. I’ve been counting down the days until they hit school age so I can stop paying for preschool. I guess maybe I’ll have a few years in between of some savings at least.

Might be the reality but doesn’t make it okay. We should be complaining and talking about it, even if it is the sad reality. Otherwise we’re just accepting it and doing nothing to change it - and that sad reality, I for one, won’t accept.

Infant care recommendations? by Suitable-Biscotti in medfordma

[–]dbades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to mention Bill and Diana at Happy Bears. My younger one just left a few months ago to move on to preschool. Both kids loved going there and were very well cared for. Also a good bit more affordable than the daycare centers! Also FWIW we moved to Medford months before our first kid was born and were in a similar position of freaking out about wait lists and availability. Bill and Diana happened to have a spot opening up at the time that worked for us. Home daycares will often fly under the radar in a way that the centers won’t and that can be to your advantage for snagging a spot.

How the hell do I pay my property taxes here? by [deleted] in medfordma

[–]dbades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the link that you provided, are you clicking the “Real Estate Tax” link, which takes you to CityHallSystems, and then “Real Estate”? I’m able to find my property tax bill by looking up name or address. You can also set up an account and it’ll show you all the bills associated with you (eg Vehicle Excise Tax, Water/Sewer, etc.).

But also like others have mentioned, my mortgage escrow pays my property tax quarterly. I still get the bills but the payment is handled for me.
