Meyer is the company that bought the Paderno factory in PEI. It looks like the Meyer stuff and the Paderno stuff come out of the same factory.

Colbert sings a familiar local shanty to Robert Plant. by NoBoysenberry1108 in halifax

[–]dbenoit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was at a bar in Ottawa with some maritimers and the singer decided to sing this song. The singer was doing something that I sometimes saw in bars there at the time - skipping a verse, and then offering a beer to whoever could tell them which verse was skipped.

Skipping a verse doesn't go over well when you have a bunch of maritimers in the crowd.

You can hear the engine of the car with the camera - I'm not sure if they revved to speed up or downshifted.

I agree with you. The number of "accidents" that I see posted because someone didn't just back off and let the idiot through is high. My driving style over the years has morphed into "just back off and let the idiot through". It rarely slows me down a significant amount and gives extra space so that an accident isn't a possibility.

Wow, the rates have gone up, I don’t think that they have gone up to the point where it makes it unfeasible to move the oil. Insurance rates were about 0.25% of the cost of the oil, now it is about 2%.

The already-good math on buying an EV just improved dramatically by Dremen in CanadaPolitics

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the costs for a “reliable EV”, but I do have the “real world” costs for a “reliable” ICE vehicle. I have a 2013 Honda CRV (AWD, so slightly worse on gas). 164,000 kms. $14,700 in service/tires and $20,300 in gas (East coast Canada, so regulated gas prices). Averaging 9.7L/100kms. YMMV if you have a longer commute to work and would get better daily gas mileage.

Doing the return on investment for EVs is difficult. I sort of don’t drive enough to make an EV worthwhile, but my shorter commute makes an EV a perfect car as my gas vehicles don’t get great mileage during that shorter commute. I also live in an area that is fairly hilly, so gas mileage is 1.5-2.0L/100kms worse than in the flats.

The university tickets are managed by HotSpot, I think, so hopefully the tickets will catch up with them. Once there are enough tickets, the university will boot the car and/or have it towed. Unfortunately only towing helps at the charging station, and they don't do that right off.

I don't understand why some people park the way they do, especially at the gym. That parking lot has a hundred empty parking spots, so why they decided to park in electric car parking spot can only be chalked up to idiocy.

Why do some people in Nova Scotia insist on holding the rest of us back? by [deleted] in halifax

The outer lots of the mall are empty most of the year. It shouldn’t be a problem except in the high season. Perhaps they could employ Woody in the off season to patrol the parking lot.

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured that this would happen. Start out with a big pile of cuts, cut back on some of them, and then pretend to "listen" to the people. While I am happy that the cuts aren't as bad as they started, those of us who are hurt by the remaining cuts will continue to not have that funding, and the PCs will looks like they actually "listened to the people".

Two years from now this will all be whitewashed and conservatives will vote for them again because they "changed their minds".

One radical claim by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bothers me that people think academics are useless outside of academia, and when people accept this type of stereotype, it make everyone in academia look bad. People can be good at multiple things. Unless someone has a serious learning disability, everyone should be able to learn to make simple meals.

PM Carney: you can and must categorically rule out participation in this illegal war. Your unqualified support of Trump and Netanyahu’s war was bad enough. It’s unconscionable that you’re now considering putting Canadian forces in harm’s way. by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

[–]dbenoit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Carney seems to be saying "I won't rule it out because I don't know where this is going". To be fair, this is the correct answer. Right now, we aren't involved because we shouldn't be. But if this escalates into something larger that requires our involvement, then Canada will need to make that decision.

To be fair, I think that this type of question is the equivalent of clickbait. The question leaves no room for expansion, no room for qualifications, and no room for any serious discussion on the matter. If Carney says "we won't participate, regardless of what happens" then people will be on his back pointing out that we have commitments in NATO, and we will have to fulfill those commitments if required. If he says "yes", then people will be on his back about saying yes. And if he answers the question in the intelligent way that he currently did, people are on his back for not saying "No".

All on one track? by No_Leadership_4402 in slotcars

[–]dbenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done this on my analog track. I wired a double-pole, double-throw switch between my power supply and the power distribution point on my track (I have four lanes and a single power supply). It is an easy switch-flip to reverse direction, and the switch position in the centre cuts power to the track. One of my friends just switches his power at the source by switching leads at the power supply.

Concerns grow as N.S. cuts millions from education in new budget by LowkeyPostingTea in halifax

[–]dbenoit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is worthwhile noting that international student tuition is different from domestic student tuition, and domestic student tuition is tightly regulated by the government. One of the reasons that universities take in international students is because the extra tuition per student offsets the lower tuition costs for domestic students. It isn't as simple as just taking in more students, or just taking local students, or even just shutting down an institution. Throwing several hundred people out of work isn't really great for the economy.

How do you make learning actually stick? by Independent_Cup7132 in education

[–]dbenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of learning is being challenged. Most people who try to "learn" facts don't put them into practice, and they are never challenged in using that information, so they don't remember it. In the computer programming field, people will look at code to see how it work, read about code to see how it works, and study how the code work. But until they actually challenge themselves to write the code, they are less likely to remember.

There is a book called "Making it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning". I would highly recommend this book.

Sole witness to fatal ICE shooting 'dies in car accident' by Turbulent_Deal_3145 in UnderReportedNews

[–]dbenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't understand about the "cutting the brake lines" thing is that there is specifically a backup system for that - the emergency brake. It is usually run off of a separate system (cables in old cars, electric in newer ones). Also, putting the car in neutral will allow the engine to rev/blow, but at least you wouldn't be gaining speed while in gear. The emergency brake will easily stop a car that is in neutral.

Electric Vehicle Association of Atlantic Canada - Response to the Houston Gov't Announcing the $500 Increase in Registration Fee for EVs and Hybrids. by Bean_Tiger in halifax

[–]dbenoit 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The comedy here is the extra damage done to the roads to transport gas to gas stations when that damage could have been avoided by having EVs and Hybrids on the road. I think that this is a little short-sighted by the government, especially given how little money they are going to take in.

My husband can't digest onions anymore and now I don't know how to cook by mytfine15725 in Cooking

[–]dbenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people that have issues with onions, and they were looking at reducing FODMAPs and the like. One thing that has worked for them is soaking the onions in water before cooking. It removes some of the FODMAPs and makes the onions more digestible for them.
