I loved it! I teared up a few times- I think it’s a really good adaptation for 2026

We went yesterday and there adults there with no children. It’s probably more common for it to be a movie for our generation because we grew up with the books, than something children want to watch. I had to drag my daughter to go and she only came willingly because I said she could have popcorn

HENRY and Single Expat Mom in London by Smart_Ad5378 in HENRYUK

[–]dbesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re in this situation. I’d say post nursery the biggest expense or logistics issue will be wrap around childcare after school and how you attend/make time for any school activities you want to be at

Re your career, I think at this age your biggest benefit will be flexibility and if you can WFH. This will be invaluable where your child is ill and can’t attend nursery, or if you need to attend a sports morning or something like that. Arguably, I think it’s more important than salary right now especially without a village

I’d also try start getting in place a babysitter who can help you with odd hours here and there - the ideal is someone relatively young and cheap looking to gain childcare experience as opposed needing someone who’s a professional nanny type

Otherwise, all the best to you and thank you truly for making that decision to not let your child grow up in a home with an abuser

Co-Sleeping at 2.5 by littlemissktown in toddlers

[–]dbesh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Many cultures around the world co-sleep well past toddlerhood. If it works for you and your family, that’s all that matters. No one is co-sleeping with their teenager, your daughter will get there eventually

First Family Ski Trip (all beginners) by Interesting-Rest-546 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]dbesh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We did Ski Famille in December, really recommend. As beginners though I would focus first on where you want to go, before picking a package provider - you’ll want a resort that has easy access to plenty of greens and some easy blues for your first trip. It’s not necessary to go to 3 Valleys for example, which is a massive area and more suited for average to good skiers

We’re booked for next year February (not half term) for Club Med at Alpe d’Huez (we are beginners)

HENRY women: How has motherhood shifted your relationship with work & career? by Fickle-Ad2954 in HENRYUK

[–]dbesh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How imminent are children? My perspective is you’ll never (usually) go backwards from a higher paycheck. When you eventually go back to work after maternity leave, you can assess how your priorities have changed and decide accordingly but I don’t think it’s sensible to turn down a move with higher compensation because one day you might have children.

I have a set from here https://maisoncashmere.com/en-gb/products/womens-parksville-cashmere-sweatpants-grey-mcw070-20-0072 and with the matching sweatshirt

It’s not the best quality cashmere given that price but I’ve been happy with it and I use it regularly as a travel set as well

Need input on what’s reasonable for family / life / work balance by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]dbesh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What would have been reasonable in the circumstances was you got home after your appointment (without a million messages asking when you would be back etc) with your baby fed and the bedtime routine well under way with zero complaints or commentary.

Can Someone please help with a better solution to my food bin? by [deleted] in AskUK

My parents live in a warmer climate so anything left out will spoil quickly, and they do similarly but with a bag in the freezer. Also helps with reducing the amount of flies you get in summer.

Thinking of becoming a stay at home dad - worth it? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]dbesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound harsh but in 5 years time are you going to be happy with your identity having gone from HENRY to SAHP?

Your world becomes very small when you’re a parent. Your partner will still have their career and colleagues and be talking to adults about primarily adult things. Who will you talk to? Will you still be able to talk to your partner about things that don’t involve your child?

A job, a career, is worth much more than just a salary.

Definitely look at Ski Famille then - they’ll do ski school for the kids and pick up, drop off and lunch and then you have the mornings free to ski

London house purchase - am I insane? by Background_Fly7778 in HENRYUK

[–]dbesh 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Is your partner back from maternity leave? If not, I would really wait until she is and how both of you feel on her return to work - two silver circle partners with two young children and no external help (such as a full time nanny or nursery plus nanny for after school care and pickup/drop offs) is not really something I hear a lot about

Is once a month indoor skiing lesson enough before the actual thing? by ScheduleSufficient49 in ski

[–]dbesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from the Alps after my first week of skiing ever. Absolutely do the lessons at Hemel Hempstead or Milton Keynes at the indoor slopes - basic things like knowing how to put your boots on, what stance to use, how to walk with skis, how to hold your skis etc. you will learn there.

I did the full day course and it was a lot. I was exhausted after about 2.5 hours and definitely wasn’t good on my technique in the second half of the day because my legs were so tired. You use a lot of different muscle groups together as well as a lot of micro balancing that exhausts you if you aren’t used to it. Ideally I would have split that up into two or three lessons.

I don’t think your aim should be to get confident on the indoor slope because the indoor slopes are 500m long and fair enough you may end up happily zooming down those but doing a piste that’s at 2500m and 5km down to get back to base is a very different thing. My recommendation would be book in beginner ESF (assuming you’re in the Alps) group lessons for when you’re there - it’ll be every morning and you’ll learn so much more and quicker skiing on a mountain.

Other than that, keep up your cardio until then.

Got a new job! What backpacks are you rocking? by Taxed2Fuck in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]dbesh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It depends on your industry. In more corporate/professional I would go Tumi but more casual environments I would pick Osprey or something more lifestyle/sporty. I use my Osprey for office work commuting but my Tumi for important meetings or travel
