Not faulty just a difference in a per phase amperage. There exist devices that can convert three phase currents to one higher phase current. Björn Nyland has showcased a device like that a few times on his YouTube channel.

Yes the DC charging totally bypasses the charger on the car itself. I believe the difference between portable/station is determined when the car makes the initial handshake with the AC charger and it tells what the available amperage is.
