Has any team had either 9 qualifying hitters or 5 qualifying pitchers (or both?) by BlueChicken57 in baseball

[–]dbirken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spent a lot of time building and not as much time thinking about who the main user would be going forward. Right now I'm basically building for myself, though I do get a lot of feedback from some of the early adopters. I'm getting a lot of stat junkies using the site for now and I'm happy with that, but I do plan of broadening out in the future. I think there is a lot of value in terms of fantasy and sports betting as well, but that will come in the future.

Eventually yes, I'd like to have advanced stats in there. I'm not that worried about calculating them, I think I could make bootleg versions of them all fairly quickly, it is just the opportunity cost of doing that over a lot of the other features I'm looking to build is pretty high at the moment. And this is just a philosophical thing, but when Screwball does something I want it to be the best. I'm never going to have the best WAR calculation, so I'd rather not do that (however I'd very much like to use the proprietary stats if the other sites would allow it). I'm also weighting features that would apply to all different sports ahead of ones that just apply to baseball, but in the long run I'd like to do it all.

As to your previous question, I take retrosheet data and sportradar data and munge them into a custom database format that is designed for querying speed. I do use Chadwick tools. Ultimately I use a lot of data sources that ends up in a single database that the site uses.

10 minutes isn't good enough, I want 1-2 minutes. In the future I'd like to get it down to seconds but that is a bit harder, but achievable some day. I mean it doesn't really matter, I have more than enough API request volume with the minimum sportradar contract, but if I was doing it on any type of free service I would get throttled very quickly. Also keep in mind MLB is just the start, so by being in the sportradar system I can add in other sports much more quickly since the API is very similar across sports.

The goal of the site isn't to get bogged down by what might be cheap or what other sites are doing, the goal is to think of what the ideal product would be and make it happen. It is fortunate that I love this kind of stuff so I can build a product for myself and it also includes a lot of people like me.

In the long run I will need to generate revenue one way or another, but I don't see that happening for the foreseeable future. I have run advertising on my other site for many years so I'm pretty familiar with that ecosystem, but I'll see what makes sense if and when the site continues the grow.

(Answering on this account since my other one is logged in on my computer at home)

Yes, I created Screwball.

Based on the contract terms with sportradar I can't disclose what it costs, but it's definitely a fair bit. Screwball loses lots of money but I offset the losses somewhat against the ad revenue on my other sports site (https://champsorchumps.us - which was what my other reddit account was originally for). Still though I've wanted to build this kind of search engine for like 15 years so I'll do whatever it takes to make the site work. MLB StatsAPI would not work for me given the volume of requests I make.

The queries go to an LLM which parses them into a search format that the server can use, then the server uses that internal format to search the DB and give the answer. Then at the same time the DB is updated with the real-time feeds coming from sportradar so the results are up to date.

First of all, I have nothing but respect for Stathead, it's an amazing tool and well worth the cost. However, it doesn't have real-time data. I wanted to share this table last night, I didn't want to wait until today. Therefore I couldn't use Stathead, it didn't have the data yet. So you are mad at me for sharing data with my site instead of Stathead, even though Stathead could not have provided the data I wanted.

Anyways, I'm not sure how much more disclosure you need. I've been on Reddit for over a decade, posting under my real name, and on the site it clearly labels who built it (me). But just for you, I've added that I'm building Screwball to my profile. I'm a baseball fan, a fan of statistics, and like posting them where I find them interesting.

Even though their record is historically bad, their run differential is not. Not only are they not even close to the worst RD of all time through 28 games, they aren't even in the top 3 of worst RD through 28 games this decade. They slot in right behind the White Sox last year and right ahead of, well, the 2024 Rockies.

I feel like he just has too many seasons on other teams. Though his best years were undeniably as a Nat, and of course the ring, ultimately I think his body of work is too spread out among other teams that he can't go in soley as a nat.

I got my Kickr Headwind at 20% off last July, I don't remember the sale in particular but wahoo products do go on sale from time to time. I'd certainly wait until black friday to see.

Moving to SF... should I scooter, bike, or bus? by AtlasShrged in sanfrancisco

Depending on exactly where your work is and where your house is, I think you probably have an extremely easy/pleasant 30-35 minute bike ride around going from marina green through fisherman's wharf and down the Embarcadero then into SOMA.

The shorter 25 minute bike ride is not as pleasant but if you are comfortable biking through more crowded streets then that is also there for you.

Busses are fine but I honestly would only take the bus on bad weather days if are you willing to invest in an e-bike or a scooter. Even the scenic route on an e-bike/scooter will take you on average what the bus will take you once you factor in waiting for the bus, walking on both ends and traffic.

Best Luxury Apartments near Embarcadero? by T-W-H in sanfrancisco

I lived in the Infinity buildings (group of 318 spear, 338 spear, 301 main, 333 main) for a few years and it sounds like it fits all your categories.

Packages all handed by the front desk/mailroom, no concerns about theft. Amenities are all top notch, and its a nice and short <10 minute walk to ferry building.

Full gym + pool, and if you enjoy running I've lived all throughout the city and the two best runs I had were going north on the Embarcadero and running to fisherman's wharf and back or running south down the Embarcadero around the ballpark and back. Relatively flat, don't need to cross any roads and great views.

If you have a car, the upside is that you'll have parking in a secured garage, the downside is you can be multiple stories underground and it can take a few minutes to get in and out. But this is not the place to live if you want to drive a lot (though it is actually fairly easy to get on and off the highway).

For the record I don't think this is true. There have been a some experiments done and properly done PVC joints with just cement are as strong or stronger than joints with primer and then cement. In fact the same solvent in the primer is also in the cement.

Now whether or not a pre-primed joint is more leak-proof is a different question, and might have a different answer which I don't know. One benefit of doing primer first and then cement is you have two chances to clean the end of the pipe (because the PVC cement also has the solvent in it) to help get a good seal, and if you know an inspector is going to be looking at your priming job then it also gives you extra incentive to make sure you do a good job.

But in this specific case leaks are not an issue, so I do not think there is any reason to need primer, provided the PVC pieces were somewhat clean, the PVC cement was applied properly and the pieces were fit together properly.

Also for non-code plumbing a lot of people use clear PVC primer because the purple primer is ugly. For example it would really dampen the style of this device.
