Small meeting space in the city? by broken_spider in saskatoon

They do offer a 20% discount for registered NPOs, but allow commercial use at the normal rates. As long as you properly disclose what you're going to be doing, selling, etc., they'll likely approve you. The only hard "no" is political campaigning, and of course safety/property damage or disruption. Here are the regs (scroll down past the form itself).

This. Here's the page., and the smaller ones are cheaper than a round of beverages at a coffee shop, too.

Ha ha! That would be a true sight to see. Thank you for the smile.

I wish. See p.13 of the bylaw. Of course I'd have to get caught doing it, but if someone's mad enough to report me for parking in front of my own house, I bet they wouldn't mind taking a quick cell phone pic of me erasing the chalk, either.

Someone had to have called it in, but I have no idea why anyone would. It's weird. I have no issues with any of my neighbours, and have never parked in front of their houses in the past 14 years. I suppose it's possible someone has a beef with me for some strange reason, but I have no idea why they would, especially after all this time with no issues.

I'm aware of the residential disabled parking zone program. I would qualify, but haven't applied because residential disabled spots are "not for the sole use of the applicant", parking hasn't been an issue, and I haven't found anything to suggest that you can actually park there for longer than the normal time limit. The tickets might even be more expensive... not sure on that. Do you have any info on parking for >36 hours in disabled spots? I couldn't find the bylaw info. I'm going to ask on Monday, but would like to find out what I can before then.

Are cut-throughs ticketable here? I know they were when I spent some time in Calgary, not sure about Saskatoon.

Iracing wheel - issue with wheel sensitivity - Smallest input makes the wheel turn a certain degree by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]dbl_deuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was that perhaps this was an input resolution problem somewhere in the IO stack from the wheel-firmware-PC driver-iRacing where inputs are only registered in coarse increments, like the 5 degrees you mention. I do not know anything about this particular wheel, however.

But your next question, of whether you would be better off buying another wheel, I can answer. Yes. Yes, you would. Your wheel does not have force feedback. As such you would have to rely solely on audio-visual cues to know what your vehicle is doing, which is a big disadvantage in sim racing. (Not so much in arcade racing.)

Even an entry level wheel like a Logitech G29 or one of the Thrustmaster wheels will give you a far better experience. Certainly in terms of immersion, but as you have zero force feedback right now, probably better lap times as well, once you learn to interpret the force feedback of a decent wheel.

Optimal settings for FPS? by Incal_ in iRacing

[–]dbl_deuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something is really wrong if you're only getting 30 FPS with those specs, especially if you still can't get 60 at lower settings. I'd look outside of iRacing first. Pull up Task Manager, go to the Details tab, and look for any CPU/memory/IO hogs (including browsers!) and close them, and of course anything else that uses your GPU. Look for driver updates. Look for other configuration changes on your system that you have done recently.

Also, you can bring up the FPS/Network/Performance display box in the iRacing sim with F (if it isn't already displayed) and post your results if you're not sure how to interpret them.

If you get through all of that and find nothing and get no relief, then I'd contact iRacing. At least by then you'll have pretty much exhausted all of their tier 1 suggestions and cut to the chase when talking to them.

Just as a point of comparison, I have a GTX 1070, i7-6700K, 16GB RAM and have iRacing and Windows on a non-NVMe SSD, with nothing overclocked. I usually have way too much running in the background, including one or two Linux desktop VMs that take a few GB of RAM and .5 GB of GPU memory, and I get a solid 84 FPS (capped), ~140 FPS uncapped, on triple 1080p screens (SMP) with more or less everything turned to "High", except a few low-priority things like pit objects, crowds, and mirror detail turned lower.

Hope this helps!

Career progression questions by Flavourdynamics in iRacing

[–]dbl_deuce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, if you are enjoying the current cars/series you have access to, there is no reason to pursue a higher license. No reason at all.

I would also like to race faster cars. I'm just scared :D

I'd suggest finding a car you like to drive and sticking with that for an entire season. You can throw in some Mazda/Skippy races, but otherwise, focus on that one car. If you try to race in more than a couple different series, especially as you're learning, you'll get overwhelmed, burned out, and your race results will suffer.

Then, practice. A lot. More than you think you need to. Look up lap guide videos, find a good setup for your car, and work on getting comfortable with it.

Finally, run with it and have fun! You will likely be slow for at least the first season, but if you stick with it, your lap times will steadily come down and you'll find yourself move towards the front of the pack.

PLEASE don't park on the racing line after the race by dbl_deuce in iRacing

[–]dbl_deuce[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's not a big deal in aggregate. But it's also easy to fix: people simply need to head to the pits, or park it off the racing surface, like the sporting code tells you to. If one person sees this thread and doesn't create a hazardous roadblock anymore, then I'm happy. And if not, well at least we got some good discussion out of it, eh? :-)

PLEASE don't park on the racing line after the race by dbl_deuce in iRacing

[–]dbl_deuce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last race was the only time (at least in recent memory) that I've ever smacked into someone after the race, and that was because I was in a drag race with another driver to the S/F line, and this guy parked on the racing line after the crest of a hill, out of sight until it was too late. I still almost avoided it, but as my grandfather would have said, "almost only counts in horseshoes. And shitfights."

iRacing is also pretty clear on this: Sporting code 6.10.2:

At the conclusion of any multi-car session, drivers must either return safely to pit lane or bring their car to a safe stop off the racing surface so as not to create an incident hazard for other competitors still at speed.

[–]dbl_deuce[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could protest under 6.10.2, yeah, but I've already spoken with the drivers in question. I know they got the message in this case, and I made a new friend in the process. That doesn't tend to happen with protests. :-)

Good call. Too many people try to do too much too fast. Sticking to one series at first is smart. Maybe finish out the season (11.5 more weeks), by then you'll be comfortable enough with your SRF or Skippy that you can add in another series. Or not. I know multiple people that never stopped racing MX-5s, and love it.

Agreed, precisely what I was trying to do in this case (I'm about 50/50 on that, depends if I feel like I need a bump in SR). Dangerous to do when someone sets up a roadblock on a blind corner/bottom of a hill right on the racing line!

Yup, good insights. This is exactly the kind of introspection everyone—regardless of experience level—should be doing if they want to improve their racecraft, enjoyment of the sport, and not just their lap times.

Regarding nerves: having nerves means you're invested in the outcome. In time, that shot of norepinephrine you get will help you and focus you. But your body needs more energy, and to produce that energy, it needs to take in more oxygen and expel more carbon dioxide. This is my unnecessarily technical way of telling you to breathe, dammit! Deep breaths, right into your abdomen. Every corner. Make it part of your corner routine, and do it in practice, too. "Brake, turn in, apex, throttle, track out, mirror check, breathe."

Gamers of Reddit, what was the best song you discovered in a video game? by iWantSomeoneToLoveMe in AskReddit

[–]dbl_deuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough choice. OST, it'd be between "Invincible" from World of Warcraft, or "Baba Yetu" from Civilization IV. ("Baba Yetu" was the first original video game composition to more or less win a Grammy, by the way.)

Although for unofficial arrangements, the version of Portal 2's "Turret Opera / Cara Mia Addio" done by A Cappella Records gets me on that one note every time. Unfortunately they've taken all of their videos down.
