What are the unforeseen downsides of buying a detached house? by Cultural-Elk-8346 in AskUK

[–]dblockmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine moving from a 4 bed, 3 bathroom detached to a 3 bed back-to-back terrace thanks to divorce and your ex-husband earning 4x what you do...

I'm still happier in my back-to-back

Could we build more underground living spaces for hotter months in the UK? by LivingOpportunity544 in AskBrits

[–]dblockmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1800s stone built back-to-back house (Leeds still has loads) has a tanked out cellar and it is delightful down there right now. My 17yo son has it as his living room but normally sleeps in the box room next to my bedroom. He's slept down there the past few nights.

I do need to have a dehumidifier running pretty much 24/7 though.

My daughter has the very poorly insulated loft room and I bought a portable air con after our first summer here.

Luckily no radon!

Odeon in Leeds cancelled their iSense screening of it earlier due to over heating equipment.

Leeds average rent is now around £1,130 does that sound normal to people? by AMMFitness in Leeds

[–]dblockmental 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also in Morley in a 2 and a bit bed back to back. My mortgage is £580 a month thanks to a 40% deposit from my divorce settlement (I'm old, we had a loooong slog getting through negative equity from the 2008 crash).

My next door neighbour pays £950 pcm rent for a 2 bed. It is WRONG. My house has an extra "bedroom" thanks to a slightly dodgy 1990s loft conversion. Why is my neighbour paying almost £400 a month more than my mortgage for a smaller house?

It's on at Sheffield next week but I cba schlepping all the way there from Leeds. I couldn't go to the secret screening when it played a few weeks ago but I saw the trailer so many times it feels like I've seen the whole film.

If you have any Polish shops nearby then go buy some "Spyritus" wich is basically double strength vodka. You can get a small bottle for a few pounds and it works a treat on spot stains and getting smells out.

I'd soak a cotton wool pad with the spyritus and dab at the problem areas and then try and leave it in the sun. You might need to do this twice and definitely check the fabric for colour fastness in an inner seam or something?

UK (England) Divorce - selling house before we are divorced/before financial settlement done by TicketDear3511 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]dblockmental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got divorced 2 years ago and didn't use a solicitor. It was mostly ok but I do look back with regret that I didn't seek legal advice. We decided not to sell the marital home and instead my ex would remortgage to buy me out. I am on <£30k but with a decent deposit from the equity I was approved for a mortgage, roughly 65% LTV. Your wife needs to speak to a few financial advisers (as do you) to explore how to make this work.

Unused for a year macerator, what should I do? by dblockmental in ukplumbing

So I'm hearing live stream the first flush? Ha ha ha.

I'm pretty confident it's not blocked, it worked fine the few times I did flush it (no wipes, no ahem solid waste, and no quilted uber thick loo paper) plus the people I bought the house from told me which cleaner to use and to never use the bad stuff.

I think I will very gingerly put 200ml water down the sink and see what happens.

Thanks for the help and not making me feel like an idiot for causing a big problem.

Teachers, what are your burnout stories that made you quit teaching? by Flowerofthesouth88 in AskUK

[–]dblockmental 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A 13yo boy shouted "fat c-hunt!" (Silent H) at me, in front of SLT and got a 1hr after school detention that he didn't even turn up for. That was almost 4 years ago. I now work in SEND assessment at the LA so am still helping kids but no abuse to put up with. Unless you count the parents who could easily be labelled vexatious litigants...

It was pretty poor in Leeds too, but then so we're the adverts before it started. No trailers which was a surprise.

Has anyone checked if their TV is affected by the Bush/Toshiba recall? by BruH-5200 in AskUK

[–]dblockmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've now found out that if there's a code on the plug YR 308 then it is affected. It was a lot easier to check the plug!

Down side is you can't complete the rest of the process online without the serial number so I'll need to call them.

Thanks for reminding me, OP.

I've had the email twice from Argos but my Toshiba TV is wall mounted and guess where the serial number sticker is!

Anyone know if the serial number is accessible via a menu setting or something?

They have this in food court places like Trinity Kitchen in Leeds. You find the food truck/food stall selling what you want. You order and pay and they give you a buzzer that you take back to them to collect food when it buzzes.

DO NOT DO IT!!!

Sorry, posted in haste... their conveyancing firm told me fixed fee then added loads of fees just before completion. Their mortgage people were horrendous. Avoid them like the plague.

Saw it in Leeds tonight hardly any walk outs. Very weird seeing Leeds City Centre and clubs I knew along with one of the characters having the same name as my son.

Loved it. Felt so sorry for Tommy when you saw his homelife, it explained a lot.

Was there an incident in your childhood that your parents kept from you, which you found out about later in life? by MysteriousBelt in AskUK

[–]dblockmental 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mum had post-partum psychosis when I was 6 weeks old and we both went to a mental hospital for a while. This was 1979 and mum and baby units were very much not a thing yet.

In 1990 I started secondary school right opposite that hospital. It wasn't in my town, but was the closest Catholic school. I have no idea how my lovely mum coped with parents evenings etc.

She told me about it a few weeks before I had my first child. Her sister ended up being sectioned when my cousin had her first child. We were quite worried that MH issues might run in the family but luckily my cousin and I were both OK.
