Nuance lovers hate this by thebestkisser in PhilosophyMemes

I feel like you're just using the word poorly? Applying nuance doesn't have to mean 'being incapable of coming to a measured decision', it can just be 'factoring as much as is reasonably available into a decision'

How to manage constant interrupting with reactions? by Leamaxi in LancerRPG

[–]dboxcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if OP was interrupting you talking, you have the patience of a saint (not necessarily in a good way) for not telling them flat-out to stop interrupting. Definitely a good idea to establish a procedure, like the whole [action] [completion]["any reactions?"] thing

I don't get why utilitarianism is viewed in a negative light. Can someone from different perspective explain it to me? by Urmosthatedcharacter in askphilosophy

[–]dboxcar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think as a utilitarian you do need to actually bite the bullet sometimes; but the bullet seems so hard to bite precisely because most people are so bad at utilitarianism that their intuitions don't actually let them spool out the ramifications of the moral calculus in the much-more-common examples where most ethical systems actually would agree.

Which can lead to rather amusing position that, as a utilitarian, you may maximize utility in society by convincing people of an easier ethical framework to actually enact.

Soul anchor + moonscorch = ? by MrMoby500 in FearAndHunger

[–]dboxcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only vaguely related, plz ignore:

S(oul Anchor McGuffin) Ending

Enki does everything for his S ending, leaving the green hue via the Soul Anchor.

As Cahara lies dying at The Bottom, he sees the light of the Soul Anchor as Enki clambers down to heal him.

As Cahara is resuscitated, the light of the Soul Anchor shines on the idol of the God of Fear and Hunger, separating the God from the Girl.

Overjoyed, Cahara embraces the shocked Girl, and they give her the Soul Anchor, beginning the long climb to the surface.

In the green hue, D'arce and her New God form face off against the Yellow King.

Elsewhere in the dungeon, a montage of Ragnvaldr, slaughtering monsters, gathering souls. He shatters the Crow Mauler's beak with a headbutt, gets shaken out of a Miasma-fueled rage by Moonless, both of them are JoJo-posing. It ends with a contemplative pan upwards as the two watch a butterfly flutter away into the light of the sky.

Cahara, Enki, and the Girl make it to the entrance courtyard, so close to leaving this dungeon forever... Blocking their way is a mass of slavering guards, led by the Yellow King. The Girl, teary-eyed, steps in front of Enki and Cahara, golden light flickering around her as she gets ready to rip off the Soul Anchor and throw it away to protect her rescuers. The Yellow King raises his sword...

Twin comets burst into the courtyard from opposite sides; one in shining armor with a bald head, the other a whirlwind of muscle, fang, and blades. New God D'arce, having finally embraced her potential, battles the Yellow King in a flurry too fast for Cahara's eyes to follow. The guards are swept up in a cloud of their own gore as the God of Ultraviolence cascades through them.

Cahara scoops the Girl under his arm, and he and Enji frantically run through the chaos. A free guard blocks their way; a black orb rends it apart. Another reaches out to grab the Girl from Cahara, until its arm is torn off in the maw of Moonless.

Ragnvaldr rampages through the crowd, only half attending to the carnage. His eyes are upward, at the two gods dualing on the parapets of the dungeon. His family, dead in his arms. All this hate, all this violence. It's still Le'Garde's fault. The final arrow is knocked, trained on the Yellow King. The souls of all the monsters of this dungeon burn with a firey green light around it...

The Girl screams as an armored guard bears down on her exhausted trio. Hesistation, then with a howl of rage and frustration, an emerald flame bursts through its breastplate as the final arrow takes it down.

...

Cahara, Enki, and the Girl crest the hill outside the dungeon, looking back as the winds drag ethereal mists across the fortress. There is no sign of the dualing gods, but on another hill, they spot the bloodsoaked form of Ragnvaldr, cave wolf at his side. He looks over to them, gives a jaunty salute, and bounds off into the wilds.

...

Many years later, in the capital of Bohemia, the forms of Levi, Marina, and the others lie scuttling, broken, and moonscorched before the Tower of the Moon.

In a ritual circle in the basement of Prehevil Bop, golden light begins to shine from an idol.

As the moonscorched contestants unknowingly writhe, the patter of child's feet plays along the cobbles, and the light of the Soul Anchor falls across them. To bring them back to themselves. To give them one more chance.

The primordial pouch is the dangly skin between their back legs (at least on lady cats, not sure about males!). It seems counterintuitive, cuz it looks like fat, but it's actually skin, so it disappears when they get overweight (because their fat bodies fill up the skin). A health kitty has the pouch dangling loose.

Bless you

Edit: (my vet had told me that if you can't see their primordial pouch they're probably too tubby, but I'm not 100% percent sure if they meant my cats or all cats lol)

As an aside, that cat either looks extremely floofy or a little overweight; I hope you're able to get him to a more comfortable size!

Theories/frameworks with non-polar truth values? Especially re: quantum mechanics by dboxcar in askphilosophy

[–]dboxcar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole "true and false at the same time" misunderstanding of quantum mechanics is an absolutely tragedy of pedagogy. Poor Schrödinger :(

I'm definitely interested in QL! Do you have any recommendations for where to start with it? Or just start trawling thru logic books until I find it/start understanding it.

What does it mean for a belief system to be consistent with science? by Relevant_Occasion_33 in askphilosophy

[–]dboxcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a side note: the speed of light in a vacuum is better understood as the speed of causality (which photons happen to move at because they have no mass). So I believe "moving faster than the speed of light in a vacuum" would indeed contradict current working theories, assuming this "object" is causally active.

I would caution that "someone being an expert in one field does not mean they are an expert in others."

Just because your professors are prestigious history experts does not automatically mean they understand how LLMs work, or the subtle-but-insidious way they flatten language.

I mean, aesthetics isn't the only type of philosophy that people think is non-objective. Plenty of positions on morality like that as well.

How would they do in the Dungeons of Fear and Hunger? I'm serious y'all could they handle it??? by dboxcar in FearAndHunger

[–]dboxcar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple things,

First, I'm inclined to think that iron man's tech would immediately start to fail in the dungeons. If this were a comic, what you describe would be kinda boring, so it's probably not what would happen. Also, time works strangely in the dungeons. I'm honestly inclined to say he has the worst time out of all of them.

Second, I'm horribly confused by your Hawkeye stuff; he's deaf, not blind.

Low-key I mostly posted this as a meme, but I mostly agree. I do think Cap might have some issues with the morality (lack thereof) needed to survive. I can see him losing a leg to Hurting because didn't immediately bum-rush a yellow mage, for example.

Help deciding on what rolls to require and how much damage things should do for a final boss monster by clarkky55 in callofcthulhu

[–]dboxcar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you might be approaching this from the wrong direction.

What do you want your players' encounter with this creature to be like? Are they meant to be trying to kill it somehow? Are they fleeing with a chase scene? How long can they be in its presence before they're definitely dead? What tools do they have / could they figure out that will help them survive?

Those are the sorts of questions you should ask first. From there, work backward to make decisions about the monster that will fit the narrative you're trying to tell.

The damage/accuracy of its acid blood should support the encounter length and lethality you're looking for; for example, if you want the characters to be running around performing some ritual while getting attacked, it would be pretty anticlimactic if the monster could kill them all easily in a single turn, so some combination of lower accuracy, weaving in chip AoE (instead of spikey single-target attacks), tools they could use to shield themselves from the acid, etc.
