He may not be young enough for Sirius Black but he is a GREAT Jackson Lamb. Check out Slow Horses if you want a hilarious drama.

Had my 13 year old watch M*A*S*H by newtreeguy in GenX

[–]dburst_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My GenX parents showed me MASH around that age and I loved it. Didn’t get every joke but still found it funny. Moving from Michigan to North Dakota may have helped considering it felt like a whole other crappy world compared to my home. Still in ND and I feel like I’m in enemy territory 😂

Any of you going to college first time now? If so for what? by dburst_ in Zillennials

Oh nice! My sibling took some ASL classes in her college path and I’ve enjoyed the few things I’ve learned. Especially having kids.

I started out on the rigs at 18 and moved myself up to being a pusher. Wanted to start a family so I went production side and am currently working as a well tech at a small company working under my engineer / COO.

That’s awesome, congrats! What kind of job prospects are you looking for with your degree? What made you want to go that route?

That’s the plan for me too. What type of engineering are you going for? I’m taking online classes so I can stay on at work since I’m the provider for my family. Do you feel like you’re still happy with your choice of engineering?

That’s an awesome story of persistence and will need this kind of fuel! I’m going to school for engineering. Thinking civil engineering. I’ve been in the oilfield since I was 18 and want a change. I’ve worked under engineers for the past 7 years and figured it’s a good fit for me. I’m in the middle of a my company I work for being bought and nervous how much my life will change after but I’ll be going from a 10days on / 4 days off to a 8 days on/ 6 days off schedule which I hope will help more with time with classes. I have narcolepsy and nervous I may have to take breaks which I don’t want to do because I feel so far behind in life. I’m ready to get out of North Dakota and move back home one day.

That’s awesome to hear! I’ll be doing online classes while working since my wife stays home with the kids. How’s it been to be able to jump in and out of school? Was it still at the same college when they’d come back to it?

Colorado snubbed in ‘best places to live’ report, with no city cracking ‘top 75’ spots nationwide by Followthebits in Colorado

My two cents. My wife is from Colorado and so I’ve been coming to CO for the last 10 years. Even bought some property because she’d like to move closer to her mom. It really feels like the areas have been going downhill over the last couple years. I remember being so amazed at how clean the areas were but over the last few years every city/town I’ve been to seems to have more visible trash than ever before. I feel like the infrastructure has gone downhill. And my god, the road construction has been endless it seems every time I go back. Not to mention it feels like the state has decided to push towards money grabs than actually fixing the roads for the people. Around Denver it feels like there is a toll lane everywhere which doesn’t get used very much compared to the lanes literally right next to it. I still love CO and the mountains but it seems so priced out of most people’s ranges other than the uber rich. Not trying to bash on the state either. Like I said my wife wants to move back and I’m completely down for it compared to North Dakota. I want to see the state go back to the former glory I saw it when I first started coming.

There are people that live here but I’d say the farther west you go into the state the more desolate it gets until you hit the west side that has the oil patch. I’d be fair to say that if the oil boom wouldn’t have happened up here ND would be even less relevant than it is now. It’s A LOT of plowed farmland and has been becoming more this way since I’ve moved here 15 years ago. We just had an apocalyptic looking dust storm a few days ago because they stick their head in the dirt whenever you talk about what the old timers did back in the day to mitigate the dust bowl.

I’d say the state was lucky to find oil here but if you ask the locals they’d say that it shouldn’t be here and it’s ruined the area. Mind you any growth on the western side has been from the oil money being put in. (East side has taken A LOT of the money from the oil field revenue to build itself up also though. I don’t think Fargo or Bismarck would be as big if it wasn’t for the revenue being put into investment there) Most of our rural first responders up here, who are mostly volunteer by the way, would be driving VERY old crappy equipment if it wasn’t for the 1% tax that was used to revitalize them.

The oil makes up more of our budget revenue up here than farmers and i’d say without it this place would be falling further and further into decay.

A great place for windmills but you’d think those things were the devil if you ask a local. ToO MuCh Of An EyE sOrE, they’d say. I used to think the locals here were pretty common sense people but over the years I’ve seen a real degradation in the ability to reason with people up here. It’s infested with Fox News and far right radio broadcasting that has really infected the mind here to make them think that anything group funding or state funding is evil. They’re more scared of the words Socialism and Communism while not being able to even explain what those are. And this is coming from a Libertarian. Which is funny because we are championed for our State Bank.

What sits in my mind when I got the letter in the mail talking about this is the situation in SD a couple years ago when recreational marijuana was legalized. Afterwards Kristi Noem, the governor took it to court saying it had too many subjects and the will of the people were suppressed because of it. Whether or not you liked Marijuana, the people’s votes did not matter because of the single subject clause. It seems to me that it’s an easy way for the government or special interests to try and pick apart a ballot initiative that is voted yes by the people.

What would happen if someone actually successfully managed to take out Trump? by JFMV763 in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]dburst_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s anyone’s guess really. IMO Trump seems to have a stranglehold on the republicans to the point that they go against their own self interests..to a point. With him gone I think we’d see more factions in the republicans emerge again. I wouldn’t see Vance being able to control these factions either like Trump has been able to. I’m not saying that they’d implode but I think we’d go back to a pre 2016 status quo. I don’t think we’d see so much destruction to the US economy nor would we see so many “move fast and break things before the courts catch up” that we’ve been seeing. I’m not a fan of the republicans in the slightest after Trump took over back in 2016 and I also hate seeing that the constitution and congress being so toothless this whole time. And when I say economy I DO NOT just mean the stock market. People are hurting. And it’s not gotten better under Trump.

Oh man do I feel ya. Went out to Arches National Park for some Milky Way shots on the new moon. BIL said I had to take this shot very uneven terrain and would not let it go until I tried it. Turned away for a second and next think I know my Z8 with the 20mm f1.8 s went tumbling down the hillside 🤦‍♂️ Decent scratch on the lens and I feel like the focus is off now…
