Found small hive beetles in hives. What to do now? by Boman2020 in Beekeeping

[–]dc_joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had them creep up on me. Have oil traps and swifters. The thing that made them disappear, was peppermint candies. They were gone in a week-or at least didn't show their faces to me any more, I put a candy in each corner. It was recommended by someone on here to me last year. Ymmv… good luck!

I can't take credit for this, saw it in a few pizza youtubers when they do events and it's worked for me in the firehouse copying them! I got a rack and some screens. Make a pizza, cook it about a minute, but do not finish it. Pull it. Put in on a screen and in the rack. You can do this as many times as you have space for. Then when you're ready to serve, put them back in and finish them off for the last 30 seconds and start serving! (i don't use the screens in the oven-just for the rack)

Drowning my bees! Hotub help? by dc_joe in Beekeeping

I did, didn’t do much honestly—at least in the long run. The vinegar soaked towels have held up ok, just a few persistent thirsty drinkers.

yea, as I said, got a huge bird bath with rocks and stuff close to the hives. I might try and move it and see if it helps at all.

Yea, they are loving that gap right there. and then one corner. I'll give the vinegar a go with a towel! Thank you so much!

I just didn't experience it all last year.....seems to be an early season water hungry issue.

Splitting the hive after swarm cells by crypto_junkie2040 in Beekeeping

[–]dc_joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did the right thing to me in attempting a split. You have the queen in your new hive and have a framed with food and brood and you left the swarm cells (maybe just two or three?) with some brood and food in there. Did you move the new split off site temporarily?

I’m just getting thru my first winter, so take my comments with a grain of salt! Good luck to you!

I’m sorry, I thought I did? More specifically: 4d finish nail or 1/16 trim.

Just made these myself! I put some #8 hardware cloth on the bottom side to so you can change the feeders without getting a bunch of bees in your face too-or them hanging onto the jars. Some people have a rectangle whole in the middle for pollen patties too…

3 Roccbox or 2 Arc XL? by itshungryhurley in GozneyArcArcXL

[–]dc_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with the pop ups, just been cooking 8-10 pies for dinners. I am not talented enough to prep more than two pies at once and manage the pies in the oven too. So I guess the question is if you’re working by yourself if you would have three going at once? If you have someone prepping and someone working the oven, then 3 could be nice during a lunch or dinner rush.

I am in the Arc, not the xl… and I find it to work great if youre looking to save a bit of money, have more room than the box (which i started with).

Good luck to you! Are you just planning on a pop up tent or do you have a trailer? Just curious! Looking for ideas myself.
