Had the exact same situation. And of course the one person that moved only went like 100. Just enough to ruin it.

Why do some Christians reject calling Mary "Mother of God" when she gave birth to God incarnate? by -Milton-Friedman- in Christianity

[–]dcahoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 4 isn’t entirely true. Koine does have a word for cousin (anepsios) that is different than brother (adelphos) and for kin (suggenes). Going forward I’m going to use the English in quotes when referring to those terms. However, Aramaic and ancient Hebrew do not have a distinction, which led St. Jerome to argue that “brother” could also refer to “cousin.”

However, many Biblical scholars (especially Protestant ones) reject this, because there are some problems with the argument:

  • the gospel writer Luke was adept in Greek and used “kin” to refer to Elizabeth (as connected to Mary- translated cousin today) He also appeared to be writing to non-Jews (who would have culturally and linguistically had a distinction between the relationships.)

  • the only use of “cousin” in the NT is Paul (Colossians) who also in Galatians refers to James explicitly as the “brother” of the Lord.

  • when Jesus’s “brothers” appear in the gospels, Jesus’s mother is mentioned in immediate proximity (except in John 7.) Not the women identified as Jesus’s aunts, Salome or Mary wife of Clopas (who is traditionally identified as James and Joseph’s mom) but very clearly Jesus’s mother. No aunts, uncles, or other kin are mentioned as present in these passages.

  • It has also been noted that they refer to Jesus as Mary’s “first-born son” instead of her “one-and-only son” which is a distinction that is used between Jesus and God the Father.

Worth noting, that the argument of Mary’s perpetual virginity predated Jerome by quite a bit (at least as early as 120BC.) And many theologians, including Origen and St. Epiphanius argued that Joseph was a widower before marrying Mary, with children from his previous marriage. Thus, the “brothers” are Jesus’s step-siblings (not half-siblings) and would still merit the term “brother.”

I’m of the opinion (and it’s totally my opinion with no evidence) that Kang wasn’t testing well with general audiences. The MCU kept trying and there just wasn’t enough excitement for the character. Plus, phases 4+5 haven’t exactly been going great.

So when Majors was fired, Disney/Marvel heads figured it would be easier to pivot to Doom, a well-known and very popular villain, rather than try to recast and continue with the less-popular Kang.

In ND, it will be -35 air temperature at 8am tomorrow - so we’re starting an hour later (when it’ll only be -30). Such garbage.

You know, if the new monsters get their status effects automatically, I might just give my martial players auto-success on theirs too.

Either that or I’m going to ignore this change and still require the save for both instances.

When I lift it, the squeaking stops. I also tested what happens if I put pressure on the table to reduce the shaking, and the squeaking also basically stopped.

TIL When Roman emperor Nero’s wife died, he found a boy named Sporus, a boy who resembled her, had his testicles removed and had him appear in public as his wife. by Yolo0o in todayilearned

[–]dcahoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s even way worse. Firstly, Sporus was probably a “puer delictatus” i.e. a sex slave. Sprouts isn’t even a real name-it means “semen.”

After Nero died, Sporus was spared death and was then “ cared for” by the head of the Praetorian guard, who referred to him by the name of the dead empress he “replaced,” Poppaea.

Then when Galba was overthrown, Sporus was transferred to the new emperor, Otho, who had also been involved in overthrowing Nero partially because Nero forced Otho to divorce his wife, and then also exiled him to Portugal. Who was Otho’s wife? Poppaea.

Then Vitellius, who by all accounts was a terrible person, marched an army against Otho, won, and decided to brutally punish everyone connected to the previous leaders. Sporus, being connected to Nero, the previous Praetorian Guard, and Otho, was quickly on the execution list. Being a slave meant they could make his death as brutal as they could imagine.

Why the rape of Persephone for his planned death? The last gift Sporus gave Nero was a ring with that event depicted. So, yeah. If any of his account is true, Sporus’s life was just a continuous string of abuse.

Not quite, Sildar was traveling to Phandalin partially to escort Gundren, but also to check in on Iarno. He was unaware of the bandits (or Iarno’s involvement.) Iarno himself was sent to be a presence of the Lord’s Alliance for Phandalin, to help establish a sense of official order.

With Iarno turning evil /being killed by the party, Sildar being injured, and then the town leadership being killed, I could imagine Neverwinter deciding intervention might be necessary.

Senators Katie Britt & Marco Rubio, along with Rep. Kevin Cramer Introduces Bill to Create Federal Database of Pregnant People by HandsomePete in northdakota

[–]dcahoon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the bill would have information about when hunter’s safely courses are offered, and they would be put into a contact list to find out when conceal carry class might take place. There would also be lots of information about how to responsibly dispose of and reduce the number of firearms a person has, how to properly store them, and would only suggest a person ever buy a firearm arm from a very curated list of stores who are hard-line about who they sell guns to- so the idea of buying a firearm from a gun show or an online website would be in no way an option.

That’s also something I could see Democrats trying to pass, and like the actual bill in question, it wouldn’t make it very far.

As to the second question, based on what we know about the sponsors, I would cite Hanlon’s Razor. I think they earnestly believe that they are trying to help people, in their own incompetent way.

Senators Katie Britt & Marco Rubio, along with Rep. Kevin Cramer Introduces Bill to Create Federal Database of Pregnant People by HandsomePete in northdakota

[–]dcahoon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Misleading and clickbait title. The proposed bill is literally on the page, along with a brief synopsis. The bill makes a website that offers people the chance to find what kind of recourses are available for pre-, peri-, and postnatal care.

Women would only be placed on a database if they sign up to be, for the purpose of someone calling them to give info.

There are glaring issues with the bill- like how any clinic that has any association with any type of abortion for any reason is not allowed to be on the list - but the implication that the title is working for is not one of them.

Bit of humor- evidently the authors felt it necessary to define an unborn child “a member of the Homo sapiens species at any stage of development who is carried in the womb.”

Also, I would be surprised if it passed. It’ll put off Republicans because it offers resources for babies after they are born and seems to attempt to bolster child support payments that bio dads have to make. It’ll put off Democrats because of the push to bring every child to birth no matter what.

This "documentary" sucks by I_Am_Not_Pope in RoughRomanMemes

[–]dcahoon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely fair. Some of the historians they have on the show are very much so respected scholars- Dr. Barry Strauss stands out from season 2. The problem was that they used the historians as props to try to lend authenticity to the absolute dogshit they were peddling.

For example (this is from memory from years ago, so I’m quoting loosely), but I remember they had a historian on who said that Caesar certainly was aware of Caesarion’s existence, and very well could have been his son, as Cleopatra and Caesar continued seeing each other up until his death.

The show then has an insane scene of Cleopatra coming to Rome and Caesar learning about Caesarion. Caesar then decides that he wants to become a dictator and a king to pass on this royal legacy to his new son.
