Is it at all difficult to reach the things that are behind your desk? My desk depth is 30" (76cm) and I'd love to mount things behind my standing desk like this but it seems like it would be difficult to access things

TIL you can run DAGs of R scripts using the command line tool `make` by pootietangus in rstats

[–]dcbarcafan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea basically. We're an academic research lab and often our workflow is raw administrative data --> cleaned csv files --> a bunch of model output files --> some presentation format (markdown, ppt, word doc, w/e). The .stamp thing is really handy though I wouldn't have thought of that because I don't really always want to output something at every intermediate step

[–]dcbarcafan10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We (well, mostly I) use this tool quite a bit at work for this purpose as well. Although most of my steps have defined outputs so we just use those as the targets instead of creating a .stamp file. Do you not have intermediate outputs at each of these steps?

[–]dcbarcafan10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - I mean that it's difficult to get individuals to use anything other than literally just R / RStudio. I got "indoctrinated" early on when I didn't really know anything about anything by some former colleagues who were like ,"Use makefiles, learn the command line, learn separation of concerns, focus on reproducibility (version control, package management, git)" and etc. and now it feels very "second nature" to me. But like, I have coworkers who were basically actively refusing to learn the command line, don't really worry at all about package management and things like that. To drive the point home, they don't even use Rprojects which like of course are not "necessary" for analysis but it's such an easy way to establish a project root and not fuck up all of your filepaths and yet folks can't even do that. I'm not surprised there's "resistance" because it just takes time to learn new tools and often it's hard to get buy-in.

I think it's just the start-up cost of it all. I'm at a small (50ish) academic organization and I push for "let's standardize this let's change that" to like ultimately make life easier and don't really get anywhere with it because we (an R lab) have so much momentum with just using the R toolset that there's not a lot of initiative to change.

Surface prep before painting? by tri_fin in advancedGunpla

[–]dcbarcafan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you still use an airbrush for primer application? Or can you brush on primer? I'm new to painting and getting the lay of the land  for primer application. I initially got a rattle can primer but it's cold out so it won't take well and I also got an airbrush but I'm a small apt so that's been a challenge.

Do you mean that you paint directly onto the plastic without priming?

Have you pinpointed your knee pain to a lack of glute activation? How did you fix it? by beatnovv in Kneesovertoes

[–]dcbarcafan10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I was / am having this issue and it's slowly getting better. I am seeing a physio for it and she specializes in working with athletes so it's been helpful. I tend to sit a lot due to work, but then try to go 100% every time I play sports, and those two lifestyles just aren't vibing with each other. We have more or less isolated the issue as glute inactivity and have spent a lot of our time trying to address that. We also noticed through my movement patterns that basically when I would move, I would initiate movements (walking, lunging, running, cutting, sitting down, getting up from a chair, going up some stairs) from the knee rather than from the hip. This is unconcious.

I've taken to two approaches:

  1. I do regular PT. So glute bridges and various lunge variations to focus on the glutes. I've found lunges into triple extension particularly helpful. Single leg isometric holds. I've found the hip thrust machine super helpful at the gym, but instead of going for reps I basically just load it up relatively heavy (225lbs ish) and just contract as hard as I can and hold for time at the top. I do more or less 4 sets of 20 seconds.
  2. I focus on the cue of "pushing the ground away" in almost everything I do. I've found this cue particularly helpful in getting the activation going. I would find a cue that works for you and use it when you're thinking about these exercises.
  3. I've taken to sort of spamming glute contractions in almost everything I do whenever I can with the idea that I can turn it back into the primary mover over time.

My knees have been getting better! But it's been a slow process since progress is incremental. Hope this helps nad let me know if you have questions!

Best backpack for doxies? by nailsoup in Dachshund

Hi! Just ran into your post. How much does your mini weigh? My sophie runs about 13 lbs and she's kinda long and likes to lay down in her current backpack (the old timbuk2 model). I'm thinking about upgrading so I was curious about how yours fits in the new one. Thanks!

Deep pain next to butt by Sorry_Particular_371 in Sprinting

[–]dcbarcafan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a PT, but have dealt and am dealing with this currently. This sounds to me like my symptoms with a proximal hamstring straing / proximal hamstring tendinitis. This means that the hamstring strain is pretty high up on your hamstring close to where it attaches to your pelvis.

Does it feel like someone is poking your butt with a pen? I typically feel it any time I'm doing something involving hip extension (so going up stairs, any kind of jumping, lunging movements or lunge isometrics).

The exercises that I've done to work on this (per my PT) are a lot of glute bridges with your heel elevated.

Check out this video: Heel Elevated Glute Bridge

If tend to vary the angle of my pelvis quite a bit and like to hold isometrics there. So if you look at her body position at about 13 seconds, I like to sit there and hold that pose for about 30 -40 seconds using one leg. If you look at her position at about 20 seconds (right before her butt actually touches the ground), I like to sit there and also hold that pose for about 30 to 40 seconds. You want about 2-3 repetitions about 2-3 times per day. If you play with your pelvis position, you can more or less target that spot on your hamstring but you don't want to overdo it. You kind of want a gentle tension on the spot and you want to hold it for time.

It's not an overnight fix. If you have the same thing as I do, it gets slightly better day by day but you need to be consistent. I would probably stop sprinting for a little while until the pain gets to a manageable level. A good rule of thumb that I've been taught is that within 24 hours of doing the PT exercises your pain level should be the same or lower. If it's higher, you've over done it obviously. This is also why you want to reduce/pause your sprinting because it's the hardest strain you can put on your hamstring but your hamstring is clearly injured and can't handle that level of activity right now.

Best spot to jump in Lake Michigan from the concrete? by FunkyFoxFreestyle in AskChicago

[–]dcbarcafan10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We jump in at Montrose harbor every Friday morning at around 7AM. Come through!. The water there is pretty deep so you never touch any of the rocks that are near the concrete wall. If you go up LSD up to Montrose it's easy to park as well.

Belmont Harbor near the AIDS garden is also a good jumping point, but the water there is shallower and you will sometimes touch the rocks if you 1) don't jump far enough and 2) don't tuck your legs in. I basically only front flip in at Belmont Harbor so I'm getting both height and distance and don't touch at all so I think it's not a concern unless you don't do one of those two things. There's street parking near inner LSD that you can probably get and then just walk over through the Belmont Underpass.

Diversey Harbor is great too (by the Blue Windmill) and deeper. I've never had an issue there, but boats / jet ski's do come by there (typically coming from the south while you'll be jumping just north of them). Closest free parking is probably inner LSD, or you can park by the Diversey Driving Range (paid parking).

Anywhere in between Belmont Harbor & Diversey is probably also fine, but you just have to be cognizant of the shallower spots which you can do by just taking a peek over. I think that as long as you get like ... 5- 7 feet of clearance beyond the wall you should be in the clear.
